once I've worked out how big the bits need to be.

Why did I misread "bits"?

I want you to play with your new vacformer so when you've mastered it I can send you bits and pieces to mould for me!

Tom, I don't think your bits would fit. Even if Ced left his balls out, as per @hendie's advice!

Lovely work here Ced. It may be small but it is becoming beautifully formed.

This build has turned into the complete multimedia experience Ced.

Fizzing with ideas - fantastic! 👏

Expect it to include gold leaf and bone carving within the week at this rate...

As to risk assessment, I've just had to do a three page one at work to get access to a particular location, nearly losing the will to live in the process. I quote the most ludicrous question on the form: 'Have you acquainted everyone in the group about any unforeseen risks that may be encountered?' Ashamed now that I didn't answer it with 'Of course - I'm a fecking fortune teller....' 😬

In the case of risk here Ced I'd simply ask yourself if you'd be satisfied with the alternative and if not, to go for broke.

Loving your work.

Nice detailing and brave use of the saw.

I'd use the kit canopy and if it all goes pear shaped you can still pull it off, fill it with plaster and mould a new one...

I like your combined cockpit interior/nose weight!

Adrian

Ced mentioned business card, so I looked at the business card.   Then in my peripheral vision I saw the F, a couple of letter and what look like an R at the end and automatically assumed it said Fnarr!

I did. Really.

Really excellent work on the kit canopy Ced

I wuz gonna suggest dropping a hot steel rule across the canopy to give it a double bubble

But I forgot...

:(

do you want any Catalina pod bucks to play with?

I will never build another Airfix Cat

Thanks Bill :)

I'd love the Cat bucks if you're done with them - a great chance to improve my techniques - thanks matey :)

For the uninitiated Bill's cat build is here.

I'm sitting firmly on the fence - you've only got the one original...

....so whichever way you decide to go, exercise extreme caution...

Thanks Andy :D

Thanks Tony :) Really appreciated, although it's mostly your fault as you know. And I'm still hankering after a MARS printer :envy:

Hendie I don't know what you could possibly mean (snurf) :D

Seam test:

The top seam photo was rubbish but you get the idea.

A few small dents dobbed with Mr Surfacer - I'll sand them (and the paint) off.

I think we're ready for strips down the sides.

Sadly I'm having a haircut and a (hopefully) boozy lunch tomorrow.

Thursday I'm helping Mrs B with some invites for the Mid-Somerset Festival, another lunch and the Science group.

I hate it when socialising / having fun gets in the way of the modelling, but it has to be done :D

More when I get some time…

Before attempting any use of the kit canopy, I'd suggest first making a new canopy master from it by filling it with plaster of Paris or Durham's Water Putty. Don't ask me why I recommend this.

Thanks Michael - that sounds like a warning from experience!

It does seem like a good idea to make a spare / some spares in case I mess up the kit one…

If I want to protect the kit canopy, should I clean and Aqua Gloss it first, then coat the inside with vaseline? Or I have some silicone release agent?

What does the hive mind think?

Just had a quick Google John and it doesn't look to be readily available in the UK, except from US suppliers with scary shipping :(

Answered my own question on the cleaning and Aqua Gloss:

I'd still appreciate some advice on the vaseline / release agent please :)

I've only used liquid vaseline with the PoP, shouldn't think ordinary vaseline would be any different other than it might not give such a smooth surface on the buck. Never used release agent as I use the liq. vas. for resin moulds too. It's always worked for me when I've used it, but....

Have you got a spare vac canopy just to try the process out before you go ahead and use the Skeeter canopy as your guinea pig? You know, just in case....

That’s North Somerset.  Totally different.  They’re a bunch of heathens up there.

Northsomer murders - I'll pitch that to ITV as a follow on series as it can't be long before they've killed everyone off in the other place.... 🤣

Thanks AW, Crisp and Keith - yep, Mid-Somerset is an annual literary festival where people compete against each other for cups and prizes.

Mid-Somer is a collection of villages where people murder each other all the time.

Similar, but less cultured, obviously :D

Thanks Keith :) As previously notified, I have some jelly (for medical purposes, obvs) but I can't find the liquid stuff (other than perfumed!?) online. Where did you get yours please?

I'll try the jelly on some scrap plastic - I don't have another vacform, sadly, but the PETg sheet will need cutting and there's bound to be some scrap bits.

A big Fnar there Ced.

Just caught up on her and you are doing a great job all round.

Simon.

Thanks Simon :)

This arrived today:

No excuse now (apart from the after-effects of lunch, not too boozy as it happens).

Better get on with the moulding.

Scary.

The fuselage has been sanded and polished and is ready for the new tubes.

Might do that.

Less scary.

I've added the 'tubes' using some 'suitably sized square section' from my mixed pack:

I have no idea what size it is but it looked right when held against the kit tube.

I couldn't find it online either Ced, I got mine from the local 'The Range' store, in the arts and craft section.

Ummm, that's not the stuff I linked to Ced - is it just 'normal' plaster of paris? I think that's softer than the Herculite I linked to and have used. I worry that if your vac machine is as powerful as has been suggested that it might crumble under the pressure? I maybe should have added I don't have one of those machines so have not had the opportunity to use a plaster buck on one, just in plunge moulding - sorry.

Anyway, here's the link again to the stuff I've used;
