There's no going back now Ced.

Thanks !

I know now

Go on Ced !!

Scary kits are the ones you will cherish the most....

After a lot of cursing and other funny inapropriate words...

Sincerely.

Sorry about the dodgy photos, hard to get focus in the right place.

Sounds like you need a new soldering iron Ced - speak to Bill

That cockpit really is the bee's knees. That's the best I can do given that Tomo @Tomoshenko has already recently used the dogs reproductive analogy in another rather good helicopter thread.........

Ah, camera mount, good idea Hendie, that might help stop wobbly photos :D

Greebie morning.

Start of the ?power sockets:

Landing light:

Nav lights, Hmmm.

I got out the 'Nigel swords' for the colour, realised they're too tiny but used the profile of the tips:

…to get something close:

Can you see them?

No?

Quite.

Thanks Giorgio :) Yep, brush painting. Masking would be too hard for me.

Speaking of which, I was going to use Filmoplast tape to make the framing but then I looked at this:

49609470001_41d3f215ab_z.jpg

… which I have to model on this:

49609717427_bc24ab4ffd_z.jpg

Well, actually on the canopy which has now been stuck on with Formula 560.

I think the best way might be to cut some Aluminium Repair Tape (ART) as it'll be easier to design and adjust the shape in software rather than trying to mask it or paint it.

I've taken some photos for the design, like this:

49609427946_97a49efbbe_z.jpg

Later.

:hmmm: Interesting: that gives you a nasty seam line to sort, between the vacformed clear part and the fuselage.

Since you have a silhouette cutter, would it not be easier to design and cut the masks then spray it? It's obvious that the clear panels don't follow the edges of the vac canopy part.

When this kit owned me I seriously considered masking off all the windows and door frame rails then dipping in Klear/Clear or another clear shiny finish of choice and then spraying the forward pod/fuselage with Halfords Hi-Build as used on my S-61N

With enough layers to level off the doors and windows it might have worked

Might

P1010227.jpg

n.b.  for clear and honest reporting I have to add that so far it has not been a spectacular success for me

Looks like you are going to nail it though Ced

Nice one

Thanks Giorgio :) Not as nasty as it seems on the close up photos, thankfully, but it will need some attention.

Both good ideas Ian and Bill, but I've already started on the ART route (see below) :)

Sadly I had the settings wrong and the tape caught on the blade:

49609953802_d7424d45fd_z.jpg

Despite that I pressed on and pressed the lower frame on:

49609760581_2266a6b6d2_z.jpg

and on the other side.

I'll paint the tape and see how it looks before I sort the blending.

Dear Ced,

Where do you get those big comedy rulers with the really big millimeter markings??

I've just had a quick catch up with this.

You're gonna need therapy after this 'un!

You know, where you all sit in a group circle and when it's your turn, you gotta say

"Hi, my name is Ced..... and I build helicopters....."

In fact, there's enough of you here to make a self-help group.

Right, let's have a count - Everybody who's building a helicopter put your hand up......!! 🧚‍♂️🧚‍♀️🚁🚁🚁🙈

Very neat solution!

Thanks Bill and Andy :)

I thought so, but when I burnished the tape down it really highlighted the canopy seam so I've had to pull it off again.

I'll have a ponder but I think, if I extend the tape for the whole door to avoid joins, it will be difficult to apply.

I think Ian's idea of cutting a window mask for this area and using Filmoplast for the rest might be easier.

Did I miss you re-vacforming the canopy Ced, cos that looks brilliant!

Nice door masks too!

Thanks Keith :) I'm using the kit canopy, much better than my efforts!

Helicopters don't have to be tiny Ced

P1140406.jpg

Jus' sayin'

The interface between transparency and plastic can be handled a few ways

The lower window position could be masked whilst you fill the joints to your heart's content and sand it smooth using PPP

The reasonably prominent door panel could be handled by overlaying it then emphasising the door-ness of it all, I did that on my Auster

P1100744.jpg

As I mentioned earlier

Jus' sayin'

First protect the windows, fill the seams, paint the interior first

Easy

ISH!

The cockpit looks fab. If you are sticking the tape on does that mean that the inside is going to be silver?

Regards,

Adrian

Wow, now that's what I call proper thinking! Thanks Adrian, you've just saved me from one of the biggest mistakes I could have made! :)

Can you imagine my reaction when, after applying all the tape to frame the canopy, I looked inside and saw all that silver!

Terrifying…

Thanks again!

Ah, now then, attractive the size may be but look at all those greeblies! :D

Thanks Bill, the PPP will be going on later :)

Ah, the lovely Auster. I might do one of those if my visit to the HAAF instils some enthusiasm (and I can find a kit!)

My problem is that the join between the vacform and the plastic over the door isn't on the real thing so I'll have to make sure it's 'well prepared' as suggested.

I tested the cutter settings on the foil again this morning - better. I'll use these:

49613008257_7ff975bd8b_z.jpg

Untitled by Ced Bufton, on Flickr

to mask the door lower windows then rip them off.

I've put an initial coat of Colourcoats DG on some Filmoplast:

49613009202_c13fdddf69_z.jpg

Another coat later. I'm hoping that the paint won't effect the glue on this stuff - we shall see.

I've also drilled the holes for the u/c:

49613007657_a33c513af1_z.jpg

Hmmm. Definitely not a tail sitter but I'm going to have to check references for the leg dangle angles.

AZ Model does one in 1/72. I’ve got one on the shelf. It definitely doesn’t fit in my 1940 theme, but Best Beloved used to fly in one in his younger days. I said I’d build him a model of the civvy one.

As far as I can tell, it’s the greeblies that are the attraction!

Great work detailing this tiny helicopter, as someone who has also started to explore the scratching of small details I know how difficult it can be to avoid things looking clumsy and over scale, something you are doing with aplomb.
