Tamiya's 1/48 Mosquito FB VI as "Hairless Joe"

Hi there,

I wanted to reach out as I am Russ Bannock's granddaughter. I came across this while searching his name for a project. Your work is amazing!

I'm not sure if you're aware, but he actually passed away this past January, shortly after his 100th birthday. He was still flying with his sons (who are also pilots) up until he passed away. He would have loved to have seen this!

Do you make these models for yourself, personally? Or do you display/sell them anywhere?

Best,

Russ's Granddaughter

Evening all!

Herewith, the poorly lit final pics of my 1/48 Mosquito FB. VI finished as "Hairless Joe", W/C Russ Bannock's mount with 418 Squadron RCAF in late 1944. My W.I.P thread can be found here and it contains all of the details behind the many scratch-built parts and unique features of this particular scheme:

I'd like to thank everyone who followed along and who offered help and expertise with my build. It was most enjoyable!

As an ex-418 member we were very saddened to learn of the passing of you grandfather. I was fortunate to meet him many times, he was an amazing man. The first time I met him was in 1986 at the 45th anniversary reunion of 418 Squadron.

if you are interested in one of these models built let me know. I was involved in the production of the decals on this model  and your grandfather provided the input for the color of Hairless Joe’s hair, which is often depicted as white, he corrected it to yellow and had wartime color comic strips that supported this. The same holds true for the Mosquito in the Alberta Aviation Museum, he corrected that after the artist painted the hair white originally.

You may know, 418 recently reactivated in Comox. A friend that I served with is scheduled to retrieve the Squadron Colors from the Alberta Legislature soon and return them to the Squadron. The colors are currently displayed in the rotunda.

Thanks everyone. A bit surprised to suddenly see so many likes and late responses but it's much appreciated.

So very nice of you to take the time to comment on my model. I do make these as a hobby for myself and have never done commission builds or sold my work.

I was aware of Russ's passing and offer my condolences. I met Russ in Hamilton in 2013 when he spoke at a gathering of veterans and aviation enthusiasts on the occasion of Mosquito KA114's arrival there for an airshow. I'm also involved in the restoration of a Mosquito here in Calgary and our organization produced a number of short videos. One of these featured Russ and it can be viewed here:
