Revell 1/48 F-86D Sabre Dog

Bit weird this; the kit is an early model without the para-brake housing at the base of the rudder.  Fair enough but annoying because I'm not too impressed with the marking options provided in the box & all AM sheets seem to be for later models WITH the para-brake.  However the instructions show the tail WITH the para-brake housing.  Colour me confused!

Also a question; the kit provides a deployed rocket tray but I'd prefer a closed tray so can I simply omit the tray?

I did close mine when I built it.  I may be wrong but I think Revell did an an early and late version of the kit. The late having the para-brake doors ? This build describes that he wants to get the “early kit” and his build does have the para-brake doors.

Hope this helps you ?

Simply ignore all the rocket tray steps :)

Don't forget nose weight though - the instructions are silent on this but you'll see a clear plastic rod appears later to put under the tail. I used car wheel balance weights - other methods are available:

Also - the rudder trim tab could do with trimming back flush with the trailing edge of the rudder and the recessed split line filled.

Thanks for the tips on the rudder tabs & confirmation about the rocket tray.  Yes, plenty of liquid gravity in the nose cone should do it.

Cutting Edge does a sheet (CED48155) which has a 97th FIS machine (51-6024) which is correct. Note that the other Cutting Edge sheet (CED48153) has 97th FIS options, but these are brake-chuted machines.

Eagle Strike also has two sheets for ‘non-brake chute’ F-86Ds:

48070 with 51-6024 in the 97th FIS scheme as above; and 51-8437 of 13th FIS.

48071 with 51-8377 of 86th FIS; 51-8407 of 2nd FIS and 51-3078 of 465th FIS.

These should be good for a start. There may be others.

Cheers did a quick search & from all the suggestions I could only find a copy of Superscale 48-954 - £21.84 + £10.75 postage (from the USA).  I think I'll pass on that! 🙀

The Big H has a few sets at less than £8:

Superscale 48-954 (85th FIS 51-8291) - £7.99

Superscale 48-955 (93rd FIS scheme, 51-6245) - £4.80.

Superscale 48-772 also has a 469th FIS aircraft 52-3675 with no chute at £3.33.

All good schemes!

Just an FYI... Revell also issued decals for an 85th FIS Scheme.

Though its only accurate for about a 6 week time span in 1954-55 I cant quite remember. I chose to build mine as the base is approximately 150 miles from me. My research showed a much more standard scheme. This is the more standard scheme.

My build is this ⬆️ version of the scheme with these drop tanks, I hope this helps ?

85th FIS: bear in mind that 53-664 above is an F-86L; 52-3879 and 52-3725 are drag-chuted F-86D-41s.

The ‘early’ (non drag chute) scheme was applied circa August 1953 and retained up to February 1955 when the last of the 'early' (non-drag chute) aircraft departed 85th FIS for conversion. The early colour scheme was applied to the following 27 aircraft: 51-2982, 51-2991, 51-2999, 51-3004, 51-3026, 51-3029, 51-3099, 51-3111, 51-6123, 51-6225, 51-6226, 51-6228, 51-6232, 51-6235, 51-6236, 51-6242, 51-6244, 51-6253, 51-8280, 51-8281, 51-8283, 51-8291, 51-8299, 51-8306, 51-8409, 51-8479 and 51-8496.

Here are a few photos for inspiration: I do like this scheme.

Interesting Sabrejet ? Im not disputing your info please dont think i am. Though I found a veteran of the 85th that had made a web-site. On that site he said the scheme only lasted about 6 weeks, faulty memory maybe ? I wish I could find it again but i did the build in 2015 ? And don't remember which one it was.

Well '6226 was already in this scheme at the time of its belly landing on 29 June 1954, and the second colour photo above was taken at Yuma in November 1954...

I have  the remnants of  the later Revell boxing of this kit you have the choice of  a machine from the 75th FIS with a nice Sharkmouth of a slightly bent  set for thr445th FIS. I also have the placement instructions which you can have for free..

PM me if interested
