This is the Revell USA version apparently different parts in box? New video just uploaded to you tube hpi guy I got the Revell Germany one so looking to see what he's talking about there being different parts in box of USA Revell kit! There is 2 Box arts for each now

I believe that the box shown on Phase Hangar is the one from the 1/72 SR-71, I think at the time, the Revell Germany box was not yet available. It would be nice if they did have a Revell US edition because it would be less expensive for us North Americans as is usually the case.

I have the 1/48 scale German version. The box is very sturdy. Very well engineered.

The box is about 5 inches deep. About 2" below the top of the box is a full size cardboard shelf that supports the fuselage. The shelf adds a lot of stiffness to the box.

The box art will need to be revised for the US market .The metric dimensions will need to be changed to inches.

Dedicated Hypersonic upgrade sets in progress

(...) here is a first announcement regarding the Revell SR-71 kit. The first two sets for the kit will be wheels and seats. I have done first test prints of both and while very promising, some further tweaks are required to get the best results.

Here's a question: the wheels will be 3D printed as separate hub and tyre parts, but how would you prefer the finished product? One-piece wheels or still separate hub parts (as per photo #3)? The separate ones would have a slightly higher price and of course you have more work with cutting them off the casting blocks and glueing them together... The brake retainers will be photo etch parts.

As for the seats: it will be necessary to remove the moulded-in plinth in the cockpit tubs and the moulded-on bit behind the seat, as I plan to include (partial) ejection rails as well.

I will also make another post this weekend with a few notes on the kit in general.

Asa follow-up to my post yesterday ( https://www.facebook.com/hypersonicmodels/posts/4765225793563419 ) :

Thank you for your answers and opinions regarding my informal poll. I think there was a slight tip towards one piece wheels. But I will make the final decision after further printing and testing.

As for the further plans:

I have investigated the Revell kit quite a bit (but still not completely). Yes, it looks like an SR-71 and it doesn't have the major shape problems the Italeri/Testors kit has. However, if you look any closer it very quickly all falls to pieces. There are several big problems, NOT including the detail simplifications in cockpit and wheel wells:

Nose too long (9mm), fuselage length (nose join to tip of tail) too short (13mm), wing plan from too short but elevons too long, fuselage joint "715" 12mm too far forward, wing leading edge to fuselage join too far forward, rudders too long but too thin, front and aft cockpits 3/4mm too short, cockpit area 2mm too narrow, canopies not high enough and cockpit tubs too shallow,

The whole lateral bulge around the cockpit section is missing, ANS tracker window bulge missing, lower aft nacelle shape incorrect, TROC camera bulge (ahead of nose wheel well) too short, DEF bulges on the noses poorly shaped, common lower nose half not correctly scribed for either nose variant, IFR door way oversized in both directions and in the wrong place, chute doors wrong shape and size, intake spike assembly design rather peculiar, separate engines too short, and so on.

While I cannot claim to have everything 100% correct, I do have a high degree of confidence in my data, from the large amount of research and study I (and a large number of friends and contributors) did over the part years during the development of my CAD model.

Yes, none of the errors pointed out makes the Revell kit look like a Spitfire or Concorde, and it's an impressive model when built. But I do not see much point in creating "correction" sets, similar to when I started out looking at the Italeri kit some years ago.

Apart from the wheels and seats, I am working on two more sets that will offer some nice additional options but otherwise we will concentrate our efforts on making the GasPatch/Hypersonic Models SR-71 kit as good as we possibly can. I still can't give you a time line, but I have high hopes that during the course of this year we will make substantial advances so that we will be in a position to offer more information.

Question to SR-71 fans: The LASRE support plate has dozens of small wires used to visualize air flow. Would you rather have them integrated in the part (see below) or have small holes where you can insert copper/lead wire to simulate the wire?

The wires in the picture below are 0.4mm in diameter

What is the difference between the Revell Germany and the Revell USA editions? The price range of $83 to $89 I've seen on the internet makes the model more appealing to me.

And is $80 Cdn cheaper at my local shop, I’ll pocket that difference.

Picked up my kit today, it is missing the instructions and decals. I emailed Revell.

That's too bad. I've always had good luck with replacement parts from Revell.  Maybe the instruction book is on-line?

I contacted customer service, I’m not returning the kit as it is selling out immediately in Canada and is on back order.

How about some drivers?

I'd take the Plusmodel pilots over these any day. Those Tori suits have quite a bit of "artistic license" to them and SR-71 pilots also didn't wear the chutes on their backs like WWII pilots. The chutes were installed in the seats and the crew were then strapped in/connected up by PSD personnel. What Tori have modelled as some sort of strap adjusters near the shoulders actually should be the female Koch fittings where the shoulder harness/risers from the seat and chute are buckled up to.

The figures look nicely sculpted but they are more fantasy than fact...
