When the going gets tough Bill builds tools

This assembly is designed to hold the aerofoil stems still whilst I run a groove into the holes from the worst deformed pieces where the holes being drilled ruined  the aerofoil

Put the fairing-to-be into the jig and begin

P1010536.jpg

File the groove deep enough to let the strut fit in the recess

And begin another

P1010537.jpg

Cut out the slot in the surface then begin filing

The jig is now clamped to the worktop and to stop it rocking and rolling a small peg inserted into the jig and the worktop

And now let the good times roll!

What about dipping thin sheet in hot water then wrapping it around suitable diameter thingy and gluing the two edges together?

I was going to suggest that very thing, except using a good grade of smooth paper. Yes, paper. When impregnated with CA it can be a very useful material for modeling fairings and other items.

So here we go with the jig work

The grooves were filed out to suit the kit legs and then thin pieces of Aeroclub tube used to replace the empty slots

P1010542.jpg

And superglue and talc used to fill to the surface

Next part two, the back legs

You found your groove Bill. :thumbsup2:

A perfect piece of lateral thinking.

What was that in the Hitchhiker's  guide about sidling up to a problem to catch it unawares? 😀

Must text Tesco

"Kernow....... send flour......."

Do we need Self Raising?

Will it matter if some currants get in too as well?

It's OK Bill, thanks, the Lidl right next door to Tesco had some - but according to a 'Which?' report yesterday, 23% of people surveyed couldn't find flour...

....I believe it's not the commodity itself that's in short supply, but rather the packaging that it goes into for shop sales - the manufacturers can't keep up...

Mmmm - currants in flour = teacakes! 😀

Don't forget to add butter and manual labour Mike  ;)

This is where I am today "day 7034 of judicially advocated lockdown " maybe

P1010545.jpg

Altering odd pieces of kit alters other odd things on non kit pieces too, still this looks OK now

P1010546.jpg

Altering the legs by adding the fairings makes for a 'funny feeling' fit, one of  the fore legs sat oddly until the rear oleos got nicely settled in place.

The other side now and - the glues setting in place.

P1010547.jpg

And oops look the top rail for the sliding door has been dislodged, let me fix that for you Bilve

P1010548.jpg

Luckily bad light does not stop play here

Now I am having second thoughts again

The wheels removed from (probably) Airfix's Nimrod kit seemed OK against the plans but in real life I am not sure now

This is one of the Nimrod inner wheels set on an axle for a size check

P1010550.jpg

This isn't

P1010552.jpg

I need a smaller wheel don't I?

They don't look too bad for sixty year old legs...

With a little gentle knife trimming they will be good

Still having a torrid time finding wheels

Does anyone (James@chally) know the proper wheel size and maybe a comparable other'plane with same size tyres?

I think i used some jaguar wheels on mine, not perfect but theylooked alot better than the small buttons Airfix supplied.

This is the miscellany of wheels of a similar if not exactly same sized diameter

The wheel on the extreme-ish right is  the Nimrod one which looks just a tad too big, the painted pair just above are Jaguar (Possibly Italeri Jag) with just left of  the Nimrod one a mystery wheel pair of some random kit

Left of the Jag wheels sits the pair I like the best, obviously Spitfire wheels and they seem likely to be cast from once I finally make a move

The ones on the left are not going to figure at all, being just too big

Thanks for these Ced, absolutely invaluable mate
