Tamiya 1/48 Jagdpanther

Recommended Posts

Only my second armour model (unless you count the Matchbox attempts when i was a schoolboy!) and what a beautiful kit this was to build. Really well engineered and almost fell together. I had originally planned to build the 1/35 version but realised it was too big for the display cabinet! This 1/48 scale is just perfect, i just wish there were more armour models in this scale out there.

First timer at freehand airbrushing camouflage and I've so much to learn! Must do better next time. Paints were Tamiya and weathering powders from Tamiya and Vallejo. Still not brave enough to plaster it in mud just yet! Photographs not the best as they're off the phone. Comments and tips appreciated. 1/48 Hetzer next....... 🙂

I like it. I have a 1/72 jagdpanther in my stash. I'm a proper novice!!

Did you do the tan base coat, then green and brown camo?

Cheers! I took some tips off YouTube and basecoated the whole thing in Nato Black. This seems to provide a bit of a masking / shadow colour in case you miss any of the top coat colours. I then sprayed the whole thing Green as this was the main hull colour on this scheme, then i added the Brown, then the Tan. A bit of a reverse of what you should do i suppose. Some other schemes have Tan as the hull colour so it depends which one you are doing.

There's a pretty decent selection to be honest*,  the bulk of modern kits are  ones from Tamiya, sure there isn't the depth you get in the other scales,  the French are big on the scale for armour,  I think as the diecasts were 1/50th (Solido) and there is a shop in Paris called Quarter Kit which specialises in ...1/48th armour, LOTS of obscure resin kits. Not cheap, but most things have been done if you really want it...

In the UK the 1/48 armour specialist  is Parabellum in Birmingham,  so not a vast distance from you.

Tip -  the Parabellum site was described by the shop owner on the phone as "the worlds worst website"  and I believe he's now lost the access codes, but look at the Quarter Kit shop, and then email to ask if Parabellum has it...

There is online Track48, which is a forum dedicated to TOTS as they call it (The One True Scale)  possibly as it's the only major model scale which is all the same,  as opposed to the 1/32-/1/35  and 1/72 - 1/76 problem.

The green base is a late war variation.  mid war on it was dark yellow,  late war you get variations, some coming out in just red oxide primer.

A fact that surprised me when I found out,  German tanks were (exceptions above) delivered in Dark yellow, and crews were supplied with tubs of paint concentrate in red-brown and dark green,  and they camouflaged them,  they could be diluted and sprayed (tanks had a compressor outlet and they had spray guns)  or sometime it was applied with brushes or rags....   which explains the bewildering variety of schemes...

there were more carefully applied variants late war, like the dot scheme and the ambush scheme as well.

*I could just build Tamiya 1/48th armour for the next two years solid  from what I have now got stashed..let alone the other bits I have in the scale...

I digress as usual

Lovely crisp build :goodjob:

Yes I've been to Parabellum a couple of times but wasn't looking for armour models really. I'll have to make another trip....shop is an absolute gold mine... really recommended 👍

Very interesting. I can see now why there's such a variety of colour schemes.

Thanks for all the info 👍

the 'true gold' there are the 1/48th specialist bits,   I only found about them stocking lots of the neat things one the Quarter Kit site as I asked...there are some great conversions and upgrade parts for new and old kits (like resin tracks for the old Bandai kits)

Back in my youth I was rather taken by 1/48, and knew armour kits were done by Aurora (which I saw a few times) and Bandai (which I saw once) but always liked the scale commonality,  so when I took up kit collecting.... erm... ahem, I mean modelling again I was very happy with the 1/48th range available but wanted more so researched more,  found various places and then found out where to buy them....

But, please, don't let me lead you astray

That is an excellent result for only your second proper armour build! Very nicely painted and weathered. And it's not always necessary to plaster AFV models in mud but some applied sparingly can really add to the final result. You could try getting some Vallejo Thick European Mud to test - which comes with a slight amount of, what looks like, vegitation in it. I apply it very scarcely with the end of a cocktail stick and it looks okay.

And as Troy mentioned - there are still quite a few Tamiya 1/48 AFV kits to have a go at. I've made a few now and they are most enjoyable builds.

Looking forward to seeing more of your models in future.

Kind regards,

Stix

Thanks for the kind comments, yes it was a very enjoyable build... Looking forward to my next one. I'll try some of the Vallejo mud next time perhaps 👍

That's a very good job.  Your freehand airbrushing looks impressively tight.  I'm guessing low airflow rate and nozzle at an angle quite close to the work.

Thanks very much...i must say that the camera hides a few mistakes here and there! Reasonbly low pressure 18psi or thereabouts, 0.2mm nozzle fairly close, but it's the Tamiya paint that's the key.... thinned approx 60 paint / 40 thinners it sprays really nicely. I've tried the same with Vallejo Model air and it can clog and splatter 🤔

Sir … that hits the sweet spot. Nice to see more 1/48 armour.

Have you had a look at Redzebra ? They do bits and bobs for armour. Also good for 1/48 diorama stuff.

Keep up the good work

Many thanks! Yes I've only completed one 48th scale armour...and already i love it! Not over complex and sized just right for my display cabinet. I've never heard of Redzebra but I'll definitely take a look. Do you know of any manufacturer that does a 48th scale Lee/Grant tank at all?

Only resin, or a resin conversion set for a Sherman,  Kenji IIRC.  (can't find link)  Quarter Kit may have one as well.

While most of the main stream types are available in 1/48th, anything off the mainstream will be resin, and expensive....

here's the Track48 site

http://www.track48.com

note the forum,  which is small, but dedicated.

I'll edit in any links if |I find them.

Quarter Kit shop

http://www.phpshopxml.com/quakit.shop

Who are THE place, as I said earlier, look here, and then check if Parabellum have it.   What is available is amazing, but a resin tank kit is around 50 euro, so gets expensive fast.....

Very nice ideed.  Kudos on your Jagdpanther.  I am sure as you look about there are more than enough kits, and bits and bobs to keep you interested in 1/48th scale.  If you do the Facebook thing there is a nice group of modellers at 1/48 Armour Modelling ( Facebook) as well as a newer group just devoted to 3D printing for 1/48 scale armour at 3D 48th  .  Both are filled with helpful folks.
I'm looking forward to seeing that Hetzer of yours. 😀  Are you planning on doing some bases for you builds?

Thanks for your kind comments. I'm about half way through the Hetzer but the camo is a bit more tricky so it may take me a while to finish! 😄 Regarding bases i do fancy having a go but not brave enough yet. Looking at other fabulous builds on here they do set armour models off really well though 👍
