Roger that, Bill, but not as patrol bombers, which I think is the version everybody seems to like; plus the ones modified as fire bombers, all of which were re-engined with CW R-2600's, cowlings, exhausts, and props from B-25's.  It's a shame that the one at the Naval Air Museum at Pensacola is an ex-fire bomber and still has the B-25  engines. I was surprised but pleased to see that the Pima Museum either found or fabricated correct cowlings to go with the correct R-1830 engines.

Hiya Mike,...... I thought that the US Coast Guard Privateers were used for coastal patrol, weather recce and ASR,........ but of course not armed patrol bombers? Most I`ve seen had a glazed B-24D like nose and glazed waist positions where the bulged gun turrets once were;

All correct statements, Tony! I have even seen a photo of  Privateers that had the canopy from an F-86 Sabre stood up on end and faired into the nose...ugly, ugly,  ugly, and a waste of a perfectly good Sabre hood! Scroll down the attached link and click on nose transparencies to see examples.

Some things of which to be aware when kit bashing to an early PB4Y-2:

The first 77 aircraft, while having the overall extended fuselage of the PB4Y-2, had the cockpit/nose section of the B-24-type seen beginning with the B-24J-75-CO. This included the Consolidated A-6B nose turret and appropriate fairing. The Emerson nose turret was never to my knowledge used on the PB4Y-2.

Although I don't do "blue" - i.e. Navy - I believe that once the ERCO bow turret was used the window configuration beneath the turret platform changed at least once. Check pictures if you're doing on of these.

The top turrets were standard rounded dome Martin A-3Cs with no aerodynamic fairing at the back of the turret as seen on later PB4Y-2 top turrets.

Thanks, I was going to start a separate thread on this having noticed several photos of aircraft with the Consolidated turret rather than the Erco turret, but  you've answered my question nicely.  :)

I have one Matchbox kit in the stash. I made some work on it before I found out the errors of the kit. Since that I havn't touched the kit albeit I still have plans for it when I have space and time again. But when it comes to markings wasn't it a third option given by Matchbox?

Thanks for this link.  If one follows the train of photos from the link, it leads to a burnt-out wreck of a Privateer after a Japanese 'Commando' raid on their base on Okinawa.  Almost 'reduced to ashes' one could say, and the wings must have had a fair quantity of fuel in them!   More interestingly the rudder and elevators are shown burnt out to their frames in a manner that could have only been possible with fabric covering.  So I'll correct my earlier posting (based on several photos in the excellent Schiffer book) that they were metal covered.

I have the White Dog decals, and they're very nice.  Unfortunately they've been out of production for many years and the company is ancient history.  Although in the era of the internet you might be able to find some on the secondary market.

<edit> that Amazon link looks like a real bargain..I would grab them, if you haven't already.

Here is nice set of nose art photos of Privateers, I assume well known to many fellows of BM

https://www.worldwarphotos.info/gallery/usa/aircrafts-2-3/pb4y/

BTW, I remember from somewhere that maybe in early 1945 there was an order to overpaint all those "sexists" arts, so if you would like to do machine carrying the  Bat rockets the nose arts are likely overpainted, am I right? And the Bat have to be scratch build, isn't? No model of it?

Regards

Not just then! I remember many years ago, one of our better local modelers, John De La Garza, a real character, did the Matchbox Privateer as "Little Feather," a PB4Y-2 that had nose art of a very fetching nude Indian maid with a feather strategically placed over her nether region. Our  best LHS always had a summer exhibit  to showcase the work of their customers in the large front window of the shop, and John  entered his Privateer. The  shop owner's wife was a very prim and proper lady, and she was so mortified seeing the nose art on the Privateer, that she made him turn it around in the window so only the RH side without the nose art was visible to passers-by! We still laugh over that one!

There was a 1/72 resin 'Detail Set' for the Matchbox Privateer produced by Cobra Resin ref CC72019.  Very good it is too, and awaits its call to duty.

A web search suggests they are part of Lone Star Models who are off line till the end of January.  Much of the search turned up their 1/48 Privateer and nothing in 1/72: sorry I can't be more specific.

Looks like Lone Star will be re-releasing it some time this year

Read down in the comments for the 1/72 info
