B58 Hustler - Finished 10/05/20

Recommended Posts

Filling and sanding continues at every stage with this one, starboard wing undercarriage doors fitted and filled, port side wing joint is in progress.

Only one of the engine pods has need any filler, looking at Bill's build I think I've been lucky with these but as he said I'm still to fit to the wings.

When I test fit the bomb rack the other day I realised that the large fuel/weapons pod is not compatible as the upper fins hit the racks so I have made up the smaller fuel only pod and opened up a hole for the acrylic rod. Its just large enough and I'll put some re-enforcement inside.

Finally the mk84 have been painted OD, I need to do the yellow nose band as yet.

Starboard wing is also now fixed in place and is a much better fit than the port side, need to sort the leading edges.

The bomb racks went on and covered much of the underside seam.

And a trail fit on the smaller tank on the base.

The smaller tank has changed the balance point but it still will work and the rod will be shortened to 150-200mm. Please ignore the messy bench, making 3 kits at once.

Primer on yesterday at last, I wanted to see how much more filling and sanding I needed to do so a quick spray with some XF22 and its pretty good, some more work on the wing joints and the leading edges where the engine mount but otherwise good.

  • 1 month later...

Hadn't realised its been a month since I last worked on the Hustler but its been busy in lock down, mostly redoing the patio for the wife but its nearly done so back to modelling!

Sprayed the first of the 3 camo colours XF59 Desert Sand last night and then XF61 Dark Green today, I'll have to leave over night before I can do the 3 rd colour.

I would normally have sprayed the Dark green as the 3rd colour but there is less of it than the 2nd green which will make masking easier.

Coming along nicely. We have a club member who used to be an airframe painter for USAF. He said they always sprayed the entire airframe with the darkest colour first, then followed progressively with the lighter colours. so the Tan would be the last to go down.

I sprayed the 3rd colour first thing this morning and just unmasked the Hustler, its a shame Project Bullseye was never implemented as it looks really good in the speculative SEA type camo. I'll let the paint harden today and then I'll gloss coat, decal and flat coat the upper surface before spraying the underside gloss black as this will save on masking and spraying.

Clear coat with future floor polish last night and started the decals this morning, only the upper surfaces so far.

And the bombs have been finished of as well.

Also had this delivered this morning, Hasegawa's A1H Toilet Bomber. It looks like the normal Skyraider kit with a small sprue with the toilet bomb. I got it from Japan as it was half the price there compared to the UK prices.

Resprayed the dodgy areas and removed the masking and the results are not bad but some of the decals have peeled and there's a few areas that will need touch ups.

Minor repairs done and remaining decals fitted. I need to find the lettering that I printed out for the base but I think I left that on my desk at work so may be a while before I can pick those up but other wise I'm calling this done. RFI up shortly.

Brilliant job...well done!

Following along with your WIP has inspired me to get one of these myself! Looking forward to the RFI!

P.S. ....note my avatar - the B-58 is just about my favourite plane!
