AltcarBoB
This is the first of a series of 1/72 monoplane fighter aircraft I am planning to work on that were built as paper planes, as prototypes, or limited production by the 2nd Division European powers. I have always been fascinated by the oddballs, never weres and didnt get a chance aircraft. So far I have in my little stash from the Netherlands Fokker DXXI, Koolhoven FK58, Polish PZL 50, Yugoslavian Rozogarski IK3 and Czech Avai B35. More will be added to the stash as I spot them online. Fokker DXXI by MPM a short run kit of the Danish Airforce prototype cannon armed version. It wasnt successful as the pair of big heavy Madsen 20mm cannon were too heavy for the 645hp Bristol Mercury XIS engine, even though the Madsens 20mm x 120mm ammunition packed a real punch. The sprues are quite clean with only some small flash and ejector pins. I built the cockpit carefully painted it and found out it didnt fit and needed some serious emery stick action. The fuselage halves and the panel lines matched quite well but the lower wing didnt want to fit and needed some very careful work with a scalpel I am still not happy with the fit of the rear of the wing. The wing tops also needed some work to fit against the fuselage and I have had to do some filling. I wanted to cut the undercarriage legs so it would look like it was on the ground with the oleos compressed. I drilled down through the legs with a 0.50mm drill bit then cut a section out of the legs and glued it back together with brass wire to add strength. AltcarBoB
I have managed to screw up making the propeller by supergluing one of the blades into the hub backwards. I have cut it away turned it and reglued it but it looks horrible and wonky. Anyone know of an aftermarket propeller that would suit the Fokker, I have measured the prop as having a blade length of 22.5mm which scales up to 3240mm or 10 feet 7.6 inches. I have googled for a replacement till my eyes are on the point of bleeding but no joy. 🤔
AltcarBoB
Well after a hiatus whilst I hunted for a replacement prop that didnt cost more than the kit I have found a prop which was from a Bristol Mercury engined kit. The hub needed a good filing because it was meant to have a spinner over the hub but its good enough for my wonky eyes. Masked the cockpit canopy, finished the tail and given everything a wet rub down with 6000 grit MicroMesh. Wow the Micromesh is good I have removed a glue fingerprint and you cant see where it was, so smooth. I am going to give it a coat of gloss black before topcoating it with Tamiya Flat Aluinium. AltcarBoB
Just given it the first blow of two of Airfix Acrylic Gloss Black as a base for the Aluminium paint. Everything looks good in black. Spotted that I need to do a bit more sanding on the cowling. I was going to use Tamiya Flat Aluminium XF16 but a test of it left me a bit unimpressed it looked very grainy, whats everyones favourite Aluminium paint brand. I like Vallejo Air paints so I was thinking of trying that.
