SAAB VIGGEN

Hi Chaps,

With great enthusiasm i plan to join this Saab Viggen STGB masquerading as the Scandinavian group build under the New Nordic title.

Although i have an Airfix Viggen at the bottom of the stash, I shall endeavour to turn the Special Hobby Viggen into something approaching trickyrich's efforts in the Specialist GB last year.

I bought this from Hannants in 2017 so was able able to compare it to the Tarangus kit which was significantly more expensive. Lucky I did because it is the same kit! Another great reason to support your local hobby shop.

My last Special Hobby kit was the truly shocking R4 helicopter which hit the bin mid last year. Hoping for slightly better from this one.

Since i live here on the outer rim, this will be a resin free build using only a set of 2 Bob's decals bought many years ago, some plans and Milliput. Oh and 200 pictures i took of the one in the Newark air museum. Scheme will be the splinter one.

You know what the sprues look like by now.

welcome along Colin and with probably the most awesome aircraft ever made!!!

I've been waiting to pop this wee bit of trivia out, but in the early 70's (71 -73) the RAAF evaluated the Viggen as a replacement for the Mirage IIIO/D's. We ended up with the Hornets, but what a beast she would have been in RAAF colours!!

I've mentioned this to someone else about this model (well the Tarangus version), it's not an easy build but it is very doable. Just spend that extra time with the test fitting. There is the need for filler for sure with this one, plus there's lots odd small details that are missing but easy to correct/add with sprue and plastic sheet.

The hardest part will be the masking, but it'll be worth it in the end. My one has grabbed the attention when I've showed it. Let me know if you need any helpful hints.

Good luck with her, you'll be fine, can't wait to see her completed!

Welcome aboard! Theres plenty of Viggens yes - but is it any wonder, with a plane cool as that.

Good luck with the build - it seems you are ready to go :)

Thanks Richard.

Your build log in the Specialist GB last year  got me interested to dig it out and have a go. Then this Group build gives me another push.

It's a cracking looking machine.

I have a cunning plan for doing the camouflage....

Another awesome Viggen build. There's gonna be some great threads and reference material available as the months progress within this GB.

We've got some fantastic project proposals already although a Splinter Viggen build is really gonna be hard to top!

Cheers and all the best.. Dave

Wow, lots of progress in this Group build. Less than a week between posts and i found my thread on page 3.

I've actually been finishing off my Warrior in the 'they also serve ' GB while deciding how to go about this. Anyway as it will be without resin i made a start on the cockpit, which is actually quite good. I built both seats so i don't loose the parts.

Nice start Colin and I do agree there’s plenty of activity in this GB already after whats only been a few days. Looks like it’s gonna be a big one!
Cheers.. Dave

Made a big more progress on this Viggen. The original cockpit is ok so I just painted it with mid grey and picked out the details. I even think it's ok without the PE. Wheel bays added and flaps removed.

Sticking strictly to the instructions I have now completed the wing structure and most of the cockpit.

All going together quite well but I did use Tricky Rich's idea to thin the leading edge at the first change of sweep angle.

Some nasty ejection pin marks inside the thrust reversing shields took a while to remove.

BTW is the build giving you a major headache - or are you using the pill casing as a paint pallette? :)

Ha ha, i keep a selection of these pill packs for mixing paint and holding small amounts of super glue . Very useful and the older i ger the more l seem to have!

Moving on..

The flaps are now attached to the wing. I used brass pins for a bit of strength. Butt joints have a habit of breaking and I don't want to have that during the painting. It's bizaar how the kit goes to great lengths to allow the afterburner nozzle to droop but makes no allowance for the far more visible flaps!

I found filler was needed on the joint between 107 and 122. Also the reverse thrust flaps 123 should connect to the 107 not 122 as shown in the instructions.

Main components coming along well.

yeap, that calming looks very familiar, actually the build so far is bringing back memories........ :door:

I found the numbering system and parts layout to be quite odd, there probably was some logic behind it........maybe!

But you seem to be handling it all nicely, great work!

Thanks guys, for exdraken and anyone else building this kit , I should note that there is a small strake either side in the thrust reversing exhaust. They are very small but quite distinctive. I scribed a line in the right place then glued in a piece of 0.01plastic card. Once dried i sanded it to shape. Quite easy if you do it before assembling the rear fuselage. See them in the above pictures.

Most people building this kit seem to be using the aftermarket canards. For those of us who can't get the resin, here's a picture of the kit ones with the moulded flap hinge line marked in ink and the starboard one cut on the correct hinge line. The difference between them is quite significant, especially as the flaps should be drooping. Since the cut has to be made, might as well do it in the correct place.

I've tried to use Squadron green stuff as filler for the first time. It's awful.  The filler and solvent had separated so i have had to throw away half of the product and the rest just didn't spread well. Hence the job incomplete.
