The wheels and tyres (although fully plastic) are actually not that bad, compared to the rest. I did some more digging and found that this kit is actually the same as Esci's snap-tite kit so that explains a lot. It would seem fair to mention it on the box though. Anyway, still a couple of months left in this GB so I can certainly improve on it.
JeroenS
Time to get to work! As I said, I like that low roof, and they needn't have added the Globetrotter option on my account 🙂 So, the high roof had to go. A few minutes with the saw soon parted the "dome" from the base of the roof. Some .5 mm card on the inside and some 1 mm card to fill out the top. A bit of filling and sanding should clean that up nicely, after which I can start adding the top panels. And there we have that nice boxy look that I like so much.

trickyrich
nice bit of work with the surgery.
Col.
Tidy start on the cab conversion Jeroen. The running gear does look ridiculously simplified but if the beginning of your cab work is anything to go by we're going to see something great come from those basic parts.
JeroenS
More surgery... I thought the inside of the roof needed some more structural strength, so I glued in some angled strip. The protruding sides also serve as guidance and attachment points on the inside of the cab. Comes in handy, since I cut off the huge locator pins and holes. So while the Milliput on the top of the roof dried I took a good look at the cab to see what else I could cut off 🙂 Hmm, these corner panels don't look very appealing... 1) moulded on and 2) way too thick. The panels are much more rounded in real life, way less thick and there's a noticeable gap between the panels and the rest of the body. More like this: A good bit of sanding took care of it. I may take a bit more off the sides. I sanded flush with the rain gutter but I think it's better to be flush with the upper part of the cab. As for the back of the cab, clearly an effort was made but it's close but no cigar as far as I'm concerned. So off it went. Some repairs need to be made 🙂 But after that it should look better with some 3D detail.
trickyrich
I like you mod work, as you say the rear cab latching mechanism will look heaps better with some scratch built details

JeroenS
Yesterday I had a late night meeting hosted by the very entertaining Mr. Pinot Grigio and it got a little out of hand, so some modelling time was lost today because of recuperation issues. But I'm on the mend so I decided to have a go at the chassis. It took all of 30 seconds to get to this stage. Very unsatisfying. You can see the detail is very crude indeed. I measured the wheel base and when converted to 1:1 it is 342 cm, which is way short of the 380 cm it's supposed to be. So that's decided then, I'm ditching it and I'm going to build my own. Since it will be my first scratchbuilt chassis I know it will not be perfect, but I believe I can make something with some better detail. And if not, at least I will have had some good fun in the process. Before I could change my mind I cut off the mudguards which are actually not so bad. I'm curious myself to see how this will turn out 🙂
Col.
Brave move Jeroen but if your cab is anything to go by it'll look far better.
trickyrich
now the real fun starts!!! It's a little hard to tell from the photos, but it doesn't look like a major project to build the chassis from scratch. It's going to be great to follow that's for sure.
Richard E
Watching this with interest Jerone: I wasn't expecting it to turn into such a major scratch building project when you started it.

The steering linkage will probably be the greatest challenge.
JeroenS
Ok so that's a wrap for the roof. I thought let's do it right so I even made a pretty extensive design (well, for me anyway) Some cutting and glueing later and here we are: It's not 100% like in the drawing but pretty darn close and hey life's great when you're not a perfectionist 🙂 14

Time to get medieval on that sorry excuse for an engine. I decided to keep the basic shape and just cut off everything else. Let's do a before and after, for the heck of it. Before: After: Ha! Much better already... So, a quick recap... Cab: cut off some moulded on detail but the rest is pretty good Interior: it's basic but I'll try and spice it up a little bit, I have some ideas Roof: bye bye Globetrotter, hello nice little low roof Chassis: ditched, starting a new one from scratch Engine: just the basic shape left, the rest will need to be made from scratch Wheels: in pretty good shape, we'll keep them... I don't want to spend a small fortune on resin cast 1/32 truck wheels and tyres anyway... This should keep me busy for a while!

JeroenS
Time to start "My First Chassis"... I carefully drew a plan for it, using the kit's measurements (which are actually quite accurate) and a blueprint I found online, increasing the wheelbase by about half an inch. What you're seeing is the outline of the chassis, axles, leaf springs and crossmembers. These are the first two crossmembers: And with the rear ends of the two chassis beams we're building a chassis! By the way the black paper is warped, not the chassis itself.
