The canards and RAT ( which is always seen deployed when on the ground ) are an obvious couple, but I’m not sure about the nose or the air brakes. How obvious is the difference between the original and resin nose please? John Get one of these if you want the RAT + Canards 😀 https://www.specialhobby.eu/en/our-own-production/special-hobby/saab-37-viggen-upgrade-set.html?listtype=search&searchparam=viggen

MarkSH
Evening all, The decals/stencilling have been sealed with Alclad aqua gloss and so I can now get on with the favourite part of any build, the weathering. I am going to use a multicolour oil paint filter directly followed with some Tamiya weathering master powder applied directly into the 'wet' oil paint, so I will be working one small area at a time: I have spread out the oil paint on some cardboard to leach out the oil medium, this will help reduce the drying time. However the oil stays 'workable' for quite some time allowing adjustment of the effects. Dots of oil paint applied with a cocktail stick. Blended in by scumbling with an old soft dry brush. Weathering powder is applied to the extremities and panel lines and then dragged, again with an old soft dry brush in the direction of the airflow. The last pass is with some silver powder, I always try to remember that I am trying to depict a very thin layer of paint over metal. It can be cleaned up by using a low odour solvent (less hot - I use W&N Sansodor) if you're not happy with the results. When dry it can be sealed as normal with an acrylic matt coat. Its a fairly slow process, but the one wing I've done took about an hour and a half. Hope this was of interest and not teaching people how to suck eggs. Cheers, Mark.
MarkSH
Quick update: Tried out the oil colours on the top paint work of the port canard, I'm using less white and more yellow, lemon yellow seems to be achieving the effect I'm after: Cheers, Mark.
trickyrich
that's working quite well! I've never actually tried using oils, and have a good set and seen it done but strangely never tried it. Please feel free to instruct as it may give me the incentive to try it out finally.
MarkSH
Hi all, Concerted effort to get the oil paint filter applied tonight: The oil filter helps to unify the colours and gives it a 'well used' look. Cheers, Mark.

MarkSH
Afternoon all, Some progress on the Viggen: Undercarriage on, always a major milestone and usually a battle especially when there is no decent method of attachment and the whole assembly is too tall and the doors don't look right against them so require retrospective fettling and then the glue wont hold and because of the double 'bogey' arrangement one wheel won't contact the ground properly and also requires retrospective fettling and...so on and so on....you get the picture, didn't enjoy this bit! Anyway also added the speed brakes and the centre line tank: Putting it to one side to allow the glue to set properly before doing anything else. Cheers, Mark.

reini
That looks stunning! I really like how your weathering really brings it all together - it's quite subtle but still VERY effective.

MarkSH
Morning all and thanks Chaps for your comments, I managed to get the undercarriage doors to sit reasonably well, but I had to add some plastic to get them to be at the correct height relative to the tyres. Overall I am happy with the painting and weathering effects and feel that I have improved some techniques in this build, however, maybe its me but it just doesn't look as Viggen like as the other kits in the GB. To be honest I can't put my finger on it, so I would really appreciate some objective appraisals of the lines of the model...is it the build or the kit? I'm going to add some weathering to the new additions and the pylons, paint the tyres properly plus fit the pitot's and the angle of attack probe and then call it done, having re-looked at the kit supplied stores I just don't feel they'll add anything to the finished article, so I'll forego fitting them. Cheers, Mark.
reini
@MarkSH ... doesn't have RB04's hanging from the wings, maybe thats what is missing? I think it looks great, colors are spot on and so on. 1

The weathering is really subtile, yet noticeable compared to the 'clean' paintjob. This build is certainly saved for future reference on weathering. 8 minutes ago, MarkSH said: however, maybe its me but it just doesn't look as Viggen like as the other kits in the GB. To be honest I can't put my finger on it Hard to say but when comparing with photos I think the problem lies in the nose/cockpit area. For one, I think the lenght ratio between the windshield and canopy is off (I think the canopy is too long). Maybe the canopy is a bit narrow too. Another thing is the Maestro replacement nose, I looks to be a bit too long and therefore too 'pointy'. In fact, the original ESCI nose doesn't look so far off. Here is another build of the ESCI kit with a photo of the real thing for comparison. I think it illustrated the canopy issue and the nose shape nicely: https://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234956681-esci-148-saab-aj-37-viggen/ So it is certainly the base kit. You've really brought out the most of the kit and it compares favourably against the newer Tarangus/Special Hobby kit. Cheers Markus 1
MarkSH
Thanks @Shorty84 I think you're right on all counts re: shape of the nose, canopy etc. actually that is quite disappointing as per one of my earlier comments about the replacement nose.....I should have spent the money on a RAT and the canards. Anyway, thanks for an objective appraisal and the build link too, I think the builder of that and I got similar results in respect of the colours at least. More in the way of an argument for getting hold of the Tarangus or Special Hobby kit as well, as if I really needed one! Cheers, Mark.

MarkSH
Afternoon all, Hope you're well and have had a relatively relaxing holiday weekend. I have finished the Viggen and the pictures are in the gallery. Thanks to all for the advice on the build in particular the painting sequence as I think that made all the difference and to the host and co-hosts, I'm enjoying this GB immensely and will now get on with the Draken. Cheers, Mark.
Dansk
Awesome job Mark, I love it and I love what you did with the oils, it's so difficult to do that but you pulled it off to perfection! 💪 Looking forward to see your draken.
MarkSH
Thanks @Dansk, Cheers, Paul, I'll be honest I thought it was going to fail at the last but the oil filter is a technique that can really harmonise a paint job.

modelling minion
That is superb work Mark, you would never believe that its the old ESCI kit. Your painting and weathering are really the finishing touches to what has been a superb and informative build from day 1. Very well done mate and I too look forward to your Draken.
