theplasticsurgeon
Introducing my Italeri JAS-39A Gripen, to be built straight from the box. The only eligable kit in my stash. Bought 2000, from Andy Pack Models, and costing £6.50. Here are the parts. I've got a 2001 SAMI review of the Revell version of this kit. Scalemates says they're the same, but for stores options. And the options available to me, undecided as yet. Edited with new photo - showing all 3 options.
PeterB
Hi Tim, At least you have a decent set of decs - My version of the Italeri kit has fancy commemerative schemes rather than service ones so I might have to buy some more. At least I should be able to get some advice on this build! Pete
Christer A
Ohhh, a lovely 39A Gripen! I've built it once, and the two-seater as well... It's a decent kit, for Italeri 😎 Note: Decal Option C is the only option for an In service machine from the late 90:s. Do not use the yellow walkways for that one though. 1
theplasticsurgeon
Whilst waiting for the off, here are my other Swedish builds - in approximate order of date in service. Heller SAAB J-21 Heller SAAB Lancen. Airfix Boeing Vertol. And rescuing the crew of that Lancen, following a crash. Airfix Drakens. Matchbox Viggen. Hand painted camo whilst I was still at school. Heller Viggen.
reini
That's an awesome collection! Gripen will be a great addition to the set.
stevehnz
One to watch here Tim, I've just picked up the Tamiya boxing of this kit, same marking options I think. I fancy one with a black radome. Thanks @Christer A for the heads up on the wing walkways. Steve.
trickyrich
welcome along Tim and one of the first to start a thread too. Nice choice, I do like the Gripen, though I have to admit I'm struggling with my 1/48th Italeri/Best Choice one! Plus that is a nice selection of aircraft there, well done. Good luck with the build, I hope its a fun one and look forward to seeing her in the gallery.
Rabbit Leader
Good to see a 1/72 Gripen being built, however something tells me it will not be the only one.. I’m a bit of a Saab newbie so will keep an eye out on this build to see how you get along. Best of luck for a great GB. Cheers.. Dave
theplasticsurgeon
Slow start for me, but some preparation of the interior so far.
Christer A
Nice! If I may fill in with a correction: the sidewalls, rear face and upper sills are black, but the side consoles , instrument panel and the tub itself is light grey. https://www.ipmsstockholm.se/home/jas-39-gripen-in-detail-part-1/ Just a friendly reminder 🙂

theplasticsurgeon
Progress First the cockpit tub, hopefully correct colour. Then fuselage assembled around it, and wings ready. And fitted, a basic airframe.
Rabbit Leader
That's coming up nice and quite quickly Tim. I'm watching on and collecting tips. Any fit issues so far? Cheers.. Dave

theplasticsurgeon
Very slow for me - but progress. Today I airbrushed the wheelwells. There is another project underway, outside the scope of current GBs, I'll be making a rare (for me) posting to RFI very soon.
theplasticsurgeon
Airbrushed Humbrol 127 underside.
theplasticsurgeon
Canopy fitted. Those little fins, you can see part 26A on the instrustions, well its stbd counterpart melted during construction. Now replace with blue plasticard - formerly a TraveLodge keyCard. Followed by airbrushed uppersides with H145 this morning.

rob85
Nice gripen! The viggens above are excellent, love the schemes. Rob Edited February 8, 2020 by rob85
stevehnz
Looking good Tim, for a boring grey scheme, that actually looks not too bad. I could be tempted, even with out a black radome. Maybe I need a two seater as well. Steve.
Rabbit Leader
Looking great Tim, I’m tossing up between doing a Gripen or Lansen for this GB. Your efforts with this Italeri kit are quite handsome indeed, I’m impressed. Cheers.. Dave

I couldn’t decide between a black nosed high vis Gripen and a toned down one, so added two more kits that I don’t exactly need to the pile. Seeing Tim’s great effort above has me thinking of starting one myself. Cheers.. Dave

Glad to here it went together pretty well - with 2 new GB coming up in 1 and 3 weeks respectively I was debating whether ot not to start mine, but I think I will give it a shot.
