My final model for this GB is the Airfix 1/72 Saab Draken. My first job was to sand off the raised detail and rescribe the main parts, I then managed to squeeze in a resin cockpit from Aires, and used a Quickboost set to replace the ducts, the pitot, secondary pitot and AOA probe are Master replacements, whilst the Falcon missiles are from a Hasegawa weapons set.

I improved other areas of the kit by dropping the flaperons, adding scissor links to the main undercarriage legs and boxing in those bays, I scratched a couple of FOD guards and chopped the one piece canopy in two parts.

1/32 Special Hobby Model 239 Buffalo "Taivaan Helmi over Finland”

Aircraft depicted was flown by Eino Luukkanen for LeLv 24 of the Finnish Air Force in the continuation war. Interestingly for his kills he painted (stuck?) beer labels on his tail. He managed 14.5 victories during this conflict using the buffalo.

I like to call this aeroplane the Barrel! But the Finns called it the Pearl of the Sky! The model took me a long time due to the limited run nature of the kit and how it is as the largest model I’ve built to date. The detail is incredible but the fit can be dreadful. I would definitely recommend the kit though. I may have used a bit of poetic license with the weathering but I wanted to try something. I sprayed the model all over Vallejo aluminium and applied masking fluid in certain areas and then sprayed the camo using a variety of acrylic paints. I weathered the model using revell weathering powders. Only thing I’m unhappy with is a seam still visible on the lower surface and the shade of the grey (it’s supposed to be black).  Hope you enjoy however:

Fieseler Storch in Swedish Service

The kit was an elderly Esci 1/48 one picked up at the Poole Vikings show. Decals and skis were from a Kora set (DEC 4803). The main colours were home brewed with a mix of Vallejo Model Air, Model Colour and Citadel acrylics. The Storch is shown in Swedish colours c.1943.

The spindly nature of the Storch makes it a tricky build but the end result is aesthetically quite pleasing - in this particular instance it’s best viewed from a distance.

Saab J35F/J Draken

Hasegawa 1/48

Here is entry No.2 for the GB, Built initially out of the box apart from a set of Eduard seat belts and latterly a late addition in the form of some AM control surfaces by Aries.

Painted with Vallejo Model Air for the top surfaces and Tamiya on the underside. I have modified the paint colours on top with an oil paint filter and just used a plain wash underneath. the panel lines and other details have been picked out with weathering powder.

The build thread is here:

So here's my entry for this GB. It doesn't actually fly but should be firmly connected with solid ground at all times.

The kit is Heller's 1/32 Volvo F12 with logging trailer. I thought this would make a nice build, however upon opening the box I found it's actually a snap-tite kit with some pretty crude detail at best. So, most of the kit parts, including the trailer, were ditched and were never seen again. I scratched the chassis and most of what remained of the kit was heavily upgraded using a heap of white plastic, for which my LHS was very thankful.

Would I recommend this kit to you: nope. I felt a bit let down actually, also because Heller makes no mention of it being a snap-tite anywhere on the box. Would I recommend giving this kit as a present to your son/daughter/nephew/niece who has never built a (truck) model before: definitely. When you put everything together, put some nice paint on it, and don't look too closely at it, the end result is not too bad at all. Some key components like the cab exterior, wheels and mudguards are actually pretty nice. For me, I took it as a challenge to scratchbuild parts I'd never scratchbuilt before and to see how far I could take it in these couple of months. It takes ages to build a truck model you know.

Besides the kit, a bunch of styrene, brass wire, alu tube, cables, hoses and AM suzi cables were used. Paint is mostly Tamiya Yellow (XF-3) and Blue (XF-8) because I wanted to paint the little truck with the Nordic theme in mind 🙂 ... I'm sure it will look familiar, there's even a cupboard assembly where the driver usually sleeps. Poor driver.

Here's a link to the build for those with a week to spare.

For starters a "before" collage of some of the kit parts.

No, normally the engine wouldn't be yellow, but I remained true to the theme as much as possible 🙂

Finnish Air Force Messerschmitt Bf 109 G-6 MT-443 yellow 5

MT443_Nordic

The first line on my filtered spreadsheet of all HLeLv 24 air combat victories is actually irrelevant regarding my build, but as Kosti flew MT-437 when scoring two La-5:s and then crash landing it a week later, its records sorta slipped in too :coolio:. MT-443 survived the war and beyond, until it caught fire in-flight in August 1950; pilot bailed out and was uninjured, but the plane was wrecked. Kosti Keskinummi (or Keski-Nummi as both versions are used) also survived the war and long beyond, until passing away in August 2018. His memoirs can be read in his book, "As a wingman in the Isthmus", of course in Finnish! http://www.koalakustannus.fi/kirjat/kirja.php?id_prd=221

Hasegawa 1:72 kit from one of their Finnish Air Force Combos - was this from a dual Mersu boxing or with a Brewster, I can´t tell

Out of the box build with a few additions in the otherwise quite empty cockpit - fuel line, seat belts and gunsight

DIY canopy masks from Eduard spare material

Hasegawa decals with Inscale 72 additions - the yellow fives only. Annoying decal bash: MT-4(2)3 with another 4 cut in between from (MT-)4(51)

Brush painted using Humbrol enamels and a Tamiya rattle can flat varnish finish

Thanks to our dedicated and enthusiastic hosts and all participants too, this GB was really fun :yahoo:! V-P

P.S. There´ll be a part 2 to this build in a moment...

Hasegawa 1:72 kit from one of their Finnish Air Force Combos - was this from a dual Mersu boxing or with a Brewster, I can´t tell this time either!

Out of the box build with a few additions in the otherwise quite empty cockpit - fuel line, seat belts and gunsight

DIY canopy masks from Eduard spare material

Hasegawa decals out of the box this time - this was meant to be Eemil "Emppu" Vesa´s MT-438 but last night I found no "8":s to decalbash one :rofl2:

Brush painted using Humbrol enamels and a Tamiya rattle can flat varnish finish

I REALLY liked these Hasegawa Gustav kits, luckily I have three waiting for the future Interceptor GB; for the Bf 109 STGB III I believe I´ll need to buy more!

Déjà-vu: Thanks to our dedicated and enthusiastic hosts and all participants too, this GB was really fun ! V-P

RNoAF F-16A pre-MLU, 1980-1990. Fujimi kit, 1/72 scale.

This kit is finished as Fujimi had planned it, using Vallejo and Italeri paints and mostly Humbrol brushes. Finished ofF with Humbrol Clear and Humbrol Satin Varnish. The colours are a bit darker than they probably should have been but they will stay like that. Finally a Norwegian F-16 on the shelf.
