Here is my Heller Saab J29 E Tunnan in 1/72. It is apparently in the markings of F4 wing and entered service in around 1954/5,

Although it is about 40 years old it went together pretty well except for a slight fit problem around the nose and some rather reluctant decals. I am not too good at NMF and ended up using a brush - anybody with more skill with an airbrush could probably do somewhat better. As I mentioned in the build thread the metallic paint changes appearance noticeably as the lighting angle varies.

It is a nice quick build and apparently quite accurate so I can recommend it if you want a cheap J29. The kit also offers markings for a late J29 C recce plane in UN service in the Congo complete with alternate camera nose.

Cheers

Not ideal weather for taking photos but here is my build of the ancient Airfix Draken J35F in what are apparently the markings of F13 wing, date unknown. The colours are rather washed out due to the lighting, and rather darker in real life.

Here is an indoor pic to compare the colour.

It is rather crude and lacking interior detail as you would expect of Airfix kits from 1971, so I did a bit of work improving the cockpit and boxing in the wheel bays. Thanks for the great assistance of several other modellers in this GB  - I have hopefully not made too many mistakes.

The latest, hopefully last, aircraft of the Finnish Air Force to be lost in combat - Brewster Model 239 BW-370.

2020-02-01_08-30-34

It's a Hasegawa 1:72 kit from a combo set with a Bf 109 G-6. It's decorated with one of two kit supplied decal schemes for a 4./LeLv 24 aircraft. Here her regular pilot, ltn Aulis Lumme can be seen in front of her port leading edge.

2020-02-01_08-36-25

Once in 1942 her landing gear didn't work and she was force landed in shallow water, success, as she was back in air in less than a month.

2020-02-01_08-38-27

She's rather well documented in pics too! I brushed on Revell and Humbrol enamels, polished it with a toothbrush before adding decals, covered it all with flat varnish from a Tamiya rattle can and finished with black and white watercolour washes.

2020-02-01_08-40-02

The canopy was DIY masked and yes, it shows... This Brewster, Bum-Walter, Ryysteri or Pearl of the Sky, was brought down in Enontekiö by Wehrmacht infantry fire in Lapland war, November 18 1945.

2020-02-01_08-41-10

She had a more glorious career against the Reds, though. I thought about applying two layers on insignia under wings, as the aluminium-yellow base separation shows through the white roundels, not good! V-P

P.S. Build time six days

OAW Fokker DVII, Utti airfield, Ilmailuosasto 1, November 1923.  This is the only one of the Finnish DVII aircraft to make it to retirement.  The rest all crashed.  A training aircraft, unarmed.  4-colour splinter camouflage, skis.  The kit itself is a hodge-podge (FrankenFokker) from Roden, MAC, Eduard, Eastern Express, aftermarket resin skis, scratch built struts, controls horns from an Eduard Dr.1 PE set, the other rigging stretched sprue.  All colours are Vallejo Air.  Decals and skis are from AML Accessories.  More fun to build than a barrel full of monkeys.

Finns are bit behind swedes on number when it comes to WIP projects - but let's keep them ahead on the finished models :P

Folland Gnat F.I, Finnish Air Force 1971

Kit: Special Hobby Folland Gnat F.I Finnish and Yugoslav Service  (No. SH72137)

Scale: 1/72

Paints: Vallejo Model, Air & Metal Color

Weathering: Flory Models Wash, Vallejo Weathering Effects

Lovely little kit that came together nicely. Mostly out of box - apart from some tiny additions in the cockpit and the pitot tube.

This is my build of the 1/72 Heller Saab A32A attack version of the Lansen. It is a nice kit and went together well, but I had to replace the decals as they were poor - my boxing was from the 1980's but the recent reboxing looks much better in that respect. I used Moose Republic decs and have modelled it as an aircraft of F15 wing in around 1968. I have been waiting for the recent storm to blow over, and managed to get a few pics today though the lighting could be better.

DSC02581-crop DSC02584-crop DSC02586-crop

The kit comes with no stores at all, and although you cannot see it in the pics I have added a belly tank from Maestro. I have also added a pair of Rb 04 anti ship missiles recycled from an old Airfix Viggen.

I enjoyed building this kit. It went together well and produced a good looking machine, though the ruddy big missiles do spoil its nice clean lines somewhat.

Three Saabs down, two to go. Thanks for all the help from the other modellers on the GB, without which I would certainly have got the colours wrong at the very least.

Here is my latest, the Cyber-Hobby de Havilland DH-112 Venom NF-3, flying out of Vasteras, Sweden, 1959.  A thoroughly enjoyable build, despite two or three small instruction snags (which seem to follow this kit---I've read of the same errors in their Sea Venom boxing).  All the paints are Vallejo Air; the kit is OOB. The decals could be more manageable.  I found them thick and rather stiff, requiring a lot of solvent and some varnish to keep them down and curved where needed.  No matter.  I had fun and it looks pretty cool with the bonnet off and the de Havilland Ghost exposed.  I have secured that with some sticky tack, btw, not glue.

Thsi is my build of the Heller JA37 Viggen fighter. It is a reboxing of their original 1/72 Viggen which included the attack, recce and trainer versions and has a few new bits such as a modified tail and a gun pod. As was kindly pointed out to me the JA37 version also had an extra fairing under the wing - covering a flap actuator I suspect, but Heller missed that so I scratched them. I also added the missing warning beacon under the fuselage, and added pylons and Rb 71 Skyflash missiles to supplement the 4 Rb 24 Sidewinders. To brighten things up a bit I painted them as training rounds in bright green.

As I was adding the finishing touches, Christer suggested I should add the belly drop tank as well. Heller provide this for the earlier versions and the gun pack replaced it on their JA37 instructions, but by changing it from 3 to 4 finlets, I was able to model the correct version for this plane and fit it.

As we are in the middle of second major storm in just over a week, I was unable to take any outdoor shots, but these have come out quite well. It was an easy enough kit to build, though the decals were a bit shot, so thanks to Tim and John for the various spares they let me have, and thanks to the other modellers for their help with colour schemes and details. I make no claims as to accuracy, but it looks like a Viggen to me though the deflector plates for the thrust reverse are cleary moulded fully closed!

That is another one I enjoyed in this GB, which seems to be heading for a pretty substantial number of builds already after only 4 weeks.

Cheers

Pete.

FINLAND - SAAB 91D SAFIR (Heller 1/72)

First one across the line for me in this GB is Heller's diminutive 1/72 Saab Safir in Finnish Air Force colours. I've tried to replicate the faded Dayglo Orange look that seems quite common when viewing photographs of the real aircraft online. This is a nice little kit, however needs a bit of work, especially fairing in the clear canopy to the rest of he fuselage. I started off with a warped fuselage however my extreme corrective technique seems to have paid off. You can view the whole sordid show here

Basic paints are Decanted Tamiya AS12 Airframe Silver, Humbrol Hu24 Trainer yellow for the fluoro undercoat and Humbrol Hu209 Fluorescent Fire Orange for the main Dayglo bits. Decals are slightly modified from those supplied with the new boxed kit and performed very well indeed. Top sheen coat is two light coats of Tamiya X-35 Semi Gloss Clear. I'm not overly happy with the quality of the final photos, however they don't look too bad if viewed on a small phone screen.

Cheers and thanks.. Dave

Here is the last of my 5 Saab jets for this GB, the Italeri 1/72 kit of the JAS39A Gripen.

DSC02656-crop DSC02655-crop DSC02658-crop

Apparently the kit manufacturers tend to get the A version confused with the later C version which was modified to meet "NATO standards" and had in flight refuelling added - 3 of the 4 decal options in this kit are strictly speaking for the C, not the A. I have used a combination of decals from the kit and other sources to model an aircraft of F7 wing, loaded for an anti shipping strike. It carries Rb 15F anti ship missiles, Rb 75 Mavericks, and Rb 74 Sidewinders, together with the ventral gun pack and a drop tank.

It is not a bad kit - there were minor fit issues but forewarned by Orso I got round them fairly easily. I have no idea how accurate it is, but it does not look too bad.

Thanks for looking.

Dornier Do 17 Z-1, Werk.Nr. 1155

DN-57 of PLeLv 46, Ilmavoimat 1944

ICM 1:72 kit

Kit supplied decals enhanced with spares box national insignia - ICM supplied were a "minus", oh no, actually a "plus" :rofl2:

Brush painted using Humbrol and Revell enamels

Eduard mask set put to good use with that greenhouse!

A lovely kit and as I don't have a kit yet for the BoB GB I might consider building another one!

Edit: oh by the way, this Dornier survived the war!
