Spitfire Mk. Vb, 107th Observation Squadron USAAF (Tamiya 1/72)

Recommended Posts

A good while back now, I purchased Fundekals' extensive Spitfire decal sheet just to get at the markings for this USAAF Mk.Vb, flown by the 107th Observation Squadron of the 67th Observation Group as they trained with RAF units out of Membury in 1943.  If you aren't familiar with Fundekals, the website is a treat.  They offer extensive online documentation of subject aircraft with colour profiles, photos, and written copy.

I used Tamiya's 1/72 Mk. Vb kit and finished the model with Tamiya acrylics; kit decals were used for the stencils as Fundekals don't provide them.  While it doesn't fully capture the Spitfire's elegant lines, and the canopy is not brilliant, it is an easy and fun build, and goes together quickly.  I think she still needs a bit more weathering to match the photos, the 107th flew some dirty birds.

Absolutely!  Can you recommend any particular kit?  I need to find a good PRU blue as well.

If you model in 1/72nd, then Special Hobby do an excellent little Spitfire PR.XI;

And Freightdog Models do an excellent resin conversion set to use with the Airfix Griffon engined pr.XIX;

Special Hobby also do a PR.X,..... but you would need to find a suitable PR canopy as this variant had a fighter windscreen;

Keep up the great work,

Cheers

Vallejo's PRU Blue (71.109) is pretty good as a reasonably factory fresh PRU.

 You could do it with a drop of light grey for faded paint effect if you want.
