What do you mean 'were' toys we made to play with?:pilot:

A lot of non modelers still consider them as toys, hell even some of my family still think I play with toys, even after 50 years of modelling.

Drifting off thread I fear, so let's steer back to it.

Does anyone know when it (Spitfire Vc from Airfix, in case anyone has forgotten) is due?

I have a feeling that we will first see sprues, made up models, box art etc at Telford, but with the actual kit not due till later.

Alas, gone are the days when Airfix were at Yeovilton, Cosford and maybe other earlier shows when such good things could be seen.  November seems a long way off.

A too long way for Telford

Let's just hope there is a Telford this year!

Why not, corronavirus perhaps ????

Everything cancel everywhere !!!!

I hope not, because Telford is for me like Mecca for the Muslims.

I visit this show from the beginning, and Castle Donington before

That's it. Shizuoka show has been cancelled. But like old_tonto says with the way the weather is going in the UK it could be a bit damp.

Hopefully it will be all good by November and it will be my 20th consecutive year at Telford, so I wouldn't want to miss it.

There seems to me to be a distinct lack of finesse about this kit, pilot seat looks like something I would have expected to see in a 1960s or 70s kit

Compared to the latest products from Arma Hobby, and Special Hobby, not to mention Eduard and Tamiya Airfix need to up their game, and quickly

Still looking forward to this. Here at last we have a mainstream Vc at a reasonable price. I know KP (and Sword?) do one, but Airfix is firmly aiming this at the high street market, the casual buyer. With the best will in the world, I have never seen KP and similar for sale anywhere other than online on specialist modelling sites like Hannants etc.

Airfix know their market and they have a price point (and bean counters) to consider.

I'll have several.

Been trying to find the sword mk14 with “Mary” 11 squadron decals but sword seem very difficult to find...

Sword kits are not made in large numbers and are best bought as soon as they are issued, otherwise they can become impossible to find outside of the pre-owned market

I can see some things that I like and some that I don't...

It's good to see several optional parts, although I'd have liked to see separate gun bulges with a choice of wide and narrow. I can see how the separate wing tops for the standard and cliped wingtips will appeal to some but I'd have preferred them to save the plastic for something else. In any case the spare prop, canopy and exhaust will be come useful for some other kits in the stash. Have to say though that the open canopy looks really too thick and wide, If this part remains the same in the production kit I'll probably prefer to build it with a closed canopy.

I see that Airfix have followed Eduard's approach in the cockpit, that is not a bad idea, however the thickness of those bulkhead reminds me more of a tank than an aircraft... Nobody here expects true-to-scale thickness, but the bulkheads in the rear of the cockpit are really too thick for my taste. Of course they can be sanded down but still,... Similar comments apply to the sides of the seat, it's like Airfix does not like to mould thin plastic parts... On the positive side, I like the instrument panel with raised details and overall the detail level is pretty good

Everything looks a bit clunky though and I feel that other Airfix kits were better in this respect.
Last but not least, I see that they did not correct the wheel well doors and these do not feature the bulge associated with a C wing Spitfire. I know, it's something that many other manufacturers have forgotten in the past but others didn't and I'd expect a 2020 kit to represent this detail.

So I will sure still buy this kit, but I feel that several parts will need replacing to meet my taste. Fortunately some can be found in the many alternative parts offered by the Eduard Spit IX kit, but I still feel that a modeller shouldn't have to replace parts in a brand new kit. Especially as RRP is comparable with the Eduard Weekend edition Mk.IX.

Still, Eduard does not offer a Spitfire Vc yet, so for the next few years I'll be left with this one if I want to build a Vc without having to modify other kits

I agree with you about the Sword kits, they are made from "soft metal" or resin mold and not steel mold like big factories

I interpret this as taking the younger\new modeller into consideration.  Likewise the tailplane fixings are 'handed'.  And an open canopy (even if a little and unavoidably overscale): cockpit detail (a little overscale) too!

Airfix are clearly trying to tempt people into modelling starting with their 'easy to assemble' cars.  What better follow on than with a Spitfire that is universally known, easy to build and shows good detail even if a little artistic licence is taken?  No kit can be 'all things to all men' but this comes close and I hope they sell lots of them.

For the true modeller, unsurprisingly, we get alternative props and exhausts.  And alternative oil coolers on the 'South West' sprue?  We should be grateful.

No Aboukier filter (not difficult for the aftermarket), but then I never really expected one.

And uncompromisingly an Vc.  No evidence of 'follow on' Vb, Xll, Seafire or anything else.

Still no evidence of a rear view mirror, and as you say wheel covers need to be slightly bulged, but it's still early days.  They say that Airfix read BM postings....

Lastly, though it should be first, thank you Airfix for posting details.

I may have a spare kit, but would need to look first.
