The Revell kit was a delight to build and, I look forward to tackling the MR3. I very nearly gave up on the Airfix MR 2 which, is not something I would do lightly. It lingered on the shelf of doom for 3 months before I could bring myself to resume work on it! 😂 Allan Edited January 9, 2020 by Albeback52

Thomas V.
Airfix Shack is their worst sales flop in many years, its literally not selling, and is being offered at dump prices. Just shows what can happen to many half hearted/ mediocre Airfix toolings when competition offers superior( and cheaper) product. Edited January 9, 2020 by Thomas V. That doesn’t suggest dumping to me, that suggests lack of supply. I’ve only got 4 of ‘em and, whilst it’s not Airfix’s finest effort, it’s a long way from their worst of recent years and is, in a number of ways, more accurate in outline and detail than the Revell kit.

Like it or not, 1/700 is the de facto standard, both for waterline and full-hull. Many 1/700 kits (particularly from Trumpeter) are much more finely detailed than most of the Airfix 1/600 range. I have a Trumpeter Hood (1941 configuration) with 400+ parts. The level of detail is eye-watering, surpassing the Airfix Belfast. I also have the Trumpeter North Carolina and Lexington, a Tamiya Bogue (escort carrier, waterline), and a Revell Tirpitz. They are all amazingly detailed as well. 1/350 and 1/700 are dominating market and 1/400 and 1/600 seems to be irreversibly abandoned. Still, for me 1/350 seems too big, especially for carriers and battleships, and 1/700 oo small, I would to have some scale between both to became a norm too.

The Bismarck/Tirpitz tooling because they where crude in both detail and shape and the Scharnhorst/Gneisenau because they where made with the straight bow and not the later Atlantic/Clipper style bow. What I really miss in the other scales that was found in 1/600 scale are the passenger ships. SS France, QE2, Canberra... Even many Revell ships where made close to the 1/600 scale. United States for example. Cheers / André

I bought the Airfix MR2 shortly after it came out. Some of the reported accuracy issues with the Revell kit put me off buying it when it was released, but I did eventually buy one online when those were being dumped at £15 each last year. I've seen no evidence of the Airfix kit being dropped anywhere near that price in the UK. Cheers, Bill.

They where sisterships. Albeit Airfix never "made" Gneisenau officialy builders got the Scharnhorst and built Gneisenau of it. I also built the Revell 1/570 scale Scharnhorst and Gneisenau and felt that Revell made the better kits with the correct Atlantic bow. Probably the reason why I just built the Airfix Scharnhorst once. I tried to convert it to a ship with Atlantic bow but lacked material and experience back then 35 years ago. https://community.revell.de/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=5989 Heller did wery well with the Gneisenau and Scharnhorst in 1/400 with the Atlantic bow. Their Sheer, Lutsow and Graf Spee and of course the Prince Eugen was nice kits to. Built them al but they where rather lonely as the 1/350 was the coming boatbuilding scale... If you think Trumpeter kits are well-detailed then you would be stunned by the exquisite level of detail in Flyhawks ship kits. They are quite brilliant. They are also not riddled with errors as are many of Trumpeter’s efforts. I also think Aoshima’s new 1/700 British County class cruisers are quite good, especially with the photo-etch parts and wood decks that Aoshima sells separately for them. Cheers / André The Belfast kit was good but, as I recall, there is something wrong about the size or location of the forward 280 cm turret as you cannot turn it broadside without the superstructure interfering. The Prinz Eugen, Repulse, and KGV were much better kits.

Personal choice I guess. For all the very subjective comments flying around when both kits were compared, I still prefer the Revell kit . I cannot tell if anything is "inaccurate" just by looking at it so, it passes the TLAR ( That Looks About Right) test! It is not As full of extraneous details that won't be seen after assembly and, it went together like a dream. Detail in Airfix kit was excellent but fit of parts was atrocious. Certainly looking forward to building the Revell MR3 Getting back on track, I was kind of hoping the partnership with Academy might have seen some of their aircraft kits being issue under the Airfix label. The new 1 /72 armour range is good news even if the initial subjects were unimaginative though perhaps unsurprising. Definitely be up for the new Dog fight Doubles, reissued Beaufighter and,,Lancaster II. Good to see the Javelin again but,at £60 a pop, I will pass on that one.
