1:72 Airfix Skyvan - Interstol, Barra Airport

Recommended Posts

Morning all,

I made a pink Skyvan:

I've always been fascinated by Barra Airport in the Western Isles, and the whole landing on the beach at low tide scenario. This photo provided the inspiration, and a nice excuse for a vignette:

Two Six Decals had the exact right stickers needed. The pink was 50/50 mix of Humbrol 200 and Cherry Paints First Group "Barbie" pink - who knew there was an enamel paint manufacturer specialising in authentic bus colours! The Airfix Skyvan needed a little bit of window adjustment and 4 blade props to become a Skyliner, but no big sweat. There is an interior in there including some passengers and some rather loud seat upholstery, but you'll have to take my word for it I'm afraid! The kit builds well for its age, although as the fuselage has four sides there are issues with symmetry and general fit. I also seem to have an issue with bowed wing struts as they were slightly warped, but hey ho.

I'd love to know a bit more history of Interstol but haven't found it. I don't know if they briefly took the Barra route over from Loganair in the 1970s?

And thank goodness for the model railway industry, otherwise where would one find OO gauge sheep? 🤗

All best, Harry

You certainly did! It's a lot of fun to see. What make are the figures? Preiser?

They certainly are, although the pilot is actually a Revell U Boot captain. The sheep I can't remember, maybe Noch..

There's a clue under the cockpit door, G-ASZJ was operated by British Air Services

Cribbed from Facebook

British Air Services was a division of BEA set up to run regional services, the eventual intention was for each division to have it’s own colour-scheme with a common look and feel. First to adopt the new livery was Northeast, the design work was undertaken by Eccleston Glossop Associates of London (about whom I cannot find any information) and was commissioned in 1970. The bright colour and rounded typeface were very much of the era. Second airline to have it’s livery redesigned was Cardiff based Cambrian who received a striking orange-roofed livery replacing their rather traditional red, white and blue colour-scheme but retaining their dragon logo. Sadly before any further new colour-schemes were launched BAS was absorbed into British Airways and the Northeast and Cambrian aircraft were repainted into the Negus and Negus BA livery. Had BAS continued in operation the intention was to create separate identities for Channel Islands division, Scottish division and for a new company to be established called Interstol. Interstol was a project based on 5 or 6 radial hubs throughout the country whereby a network of air services was to be operated by STOL aircraft such as the DHC Twin Otter or Shorts Skyliner for example. Skyliner G-ASZJ had the Eccleston Glossop Associates colour-scheme applied during the evaluation of the project in 1970. Evaluation flights were flown during mid 1970, but by September the project was shelved.

I have been to Barra on holiday four times and always make a point of watching the Twin Otters landing on An Tràigh Mhòr beach. A Skyvan must have been even better to watch and a bigger splash!

Fantastic! Still haven't done it myself, definately on the bucket list.

Ah, lovely :). My grand-daughter would love it. She wanted a pink aeroplane for Christmas! :)

Well, this is the scheme for her! Either that or Wizz Air.

Also I remember years ago building a P40 in the colours flown by Sue Parish, baby pink and azure blue. So I'm afraid I do have form for this sort of thing...

Thanks all for the comments, much appreciated.

Great dio, that must be a hardy fellow in the very last photo of the real thing, doesn't seem to have a shirt on, in no time I've ever been to Scotland could I do that

Thanks Graeme - I'd say that is a classic bit of 1970s skin tight beige knitwear. I wasn't around at the time, so I'll not judge the fella..
