1/72 RS Models XRL-1 Airbonita

Hi All

As a quick New Year divertimento I've pulled this from my pile of hapless voulenteers

DSCF8830.jpg

Less than 50 parts, silver and yellow, what's not to like?!

DSCF8831.jpg

There's some nice detail in there too

DSCF8832.jpg

However, no IP decal 😶

Never mind, the cockpit calls for Chromate Yellow, a colour I've yet to become acquainted with!

As far as cockpit colours are concerned:

The USAAF reference also includes cockpit internals, and you can tune the colour callouts from the kit to those mentioned in that reference.

Thanks Alt-92 ( and huge thanks to Phantome for the research!), I've adapted the Chromate Yellow to Chromate Green Vallejo Air 71.094

I've a feeling I've misplaced the control column, no change there then.

Hi All

Moving on to the wings, they're well supplied with plastic gates and release pin towers

DSCF8941.jpg

There's even a gate on each of the pitot tubes.

The fit isn't too bad

DSCF8942.jpg

But the fit to the body will need some fettling

DSCF8943.jpg

At least I don't have to paint it yet ;)

Er, yuk?

I find that, with these short run kits, it's an idea to try and 'see' what the original mould looked like.

In the photos above I can see the lump in the fuselage gap and a 'ridge' on the wing part and also at the back - quite common in my experience.

I use a Citadel 'Mouldline Remover' on this sort of thing (about £8 online) and it's great; scraped down the edges it seems to 'know' what is flash and what is part.

Worth the investment?

Hi Ced

That 'Mouldline Remover' looks a nice bit of kit, and it would have been nicer if I hadn't just spent the last half hour on Y'Toob clicking through a review of it onto some serious build vids

More building, less watching building :whip:

Hi All

Not much on this one, mostly trying to get a decent yellow on the wings after masking the black lines.

Vallejo 71.025 Dark Yellow as a base, then several coats of 71.002 Medium Yellow to follow.

Not only the viscosity of semi-skinned milk, but also the opacity :rain:.

Nice yellow Prof.

Yellow is a pain isn't it?

Some people say to spray white (or pink!) first to reduce the number of coats required.

I'm too lazy and have found that VMA 71.078 does the trick. YMMV.

My last couple of yellow paint jobs I've moved away from white undercoat and used pink, actually @CedB patent figure undercoating Ratskin Flesh.  Almost makes painting yellow easy, much easier to get an even coloured finish.

Hi All

@CedB knows his onions, so a couple more rounds of 71.078 went on for good measure.

Did it work?

You'll have to wait and see!

Masked for the undercoat of generic grey

A flash over with 71.062 Aluminum

DSCF8991.jpg

Ooh, shiny 😎

And the big reveal

DSCF8992.jpg

The yellow is darker than the photo suggests, and as the colour callout on the box is for "Dark Yellow" I'm going with it.

A couple of spots to touch up, nothing drastic, then a coat of Pledge to seal it all in before the decals.

Hi All

Stickers on, the tail is still wrinkly from the Micro Sol

DSCF8993.jpg

I've since trimmed it back and given it all a sealing coat of Pledge, now just waiting on it to dry out before approaching with the Flory.

Hi All

A quick wipe down with a dark Flory wash and a coat of W&N Matt Varnish

DSCF9001.jpg

That prop is the second attempt. The first one was when I thought I could brush paint the tips

Anyhoo, she's now in quarantine for a couple of days to harden up before final assembly.

Hi All

Managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory on this one...

DSCF9015.jpg

DSCF9016.jpg

The canopy is just placed on, because although it's not too noticeable in these pics, I dropped the starboard exhaust manifold down inside the body. It rattled around for a bit while I tried to wheedle it out, but it then fell silent and hasn't been heard of since  , so I replaced it with a short length of wire sleeve.

Odds are that if I sealed it up it would release the part back to rattle for all of eternity.

So there she'll sit, in limbo. I'll shake her every now and then just in case.

Moving swiftly on...
