Tiran 5 - 1/35 Tamiya

Recommended Posts

This was my project for the T-55 Single Type Group Build down in the Britmodeller Group Build section. The Tamiya kit was a joy to build although I had a couple of fit issues early on - which surprised me for a Tamiya kit. Nothing major - just a few wishy-washy connection points/areas. Of course it could have just been me that was the issue!

Early on I decided to replace the band tracks with some individual track links from MiniArt and didn't want to use the mesh provided by Tamiya so got the relevant grill set from Eduard. For this project I decided to try some slightly more restrained weathering than I sometimes do - I didn't use any weathering products such as Mig Muds (or their sand equivalent?) which I often use.

Kit: Tamiya 1/35 Kit No. 328

Extras: MiniArt Track Links Set No. 37048, Eduard Grill Set No. 35257, thin wire for the aerials, spare PE bits from my Typhoon build for the jerry can strap buckles, painted masking tape for the straps and various stowage items from a variety of old kits and stowage sets.

Paints: Humbrol, Revell, Citadel, Vallejo and Railmatch Acrylic paints all applied with brushes

I had planned a fairly complex display base for this Tiran 5 but the time limitations of a STGB (3 months) meant I ended up doing a fairly simple idea but I did include the two figures Tamiya provided in the kit:

The base I did end up making includes some basic ideas from my originally planned design:

Thank you to anyone who kindly took the time to comment in my build thread.

Kind regards,

I'm very familiar with this particular kit as you know, so I can say that this build has turned out to be the poodle's privates. I'm going to be very repetitious now an say what I always say, albeit paraphrased, your hairy stick skills are second to none. Nice one Stix.

Very nice finish indeed.

I'm currently planning a Tiran 5 kitbash at some point from MiniArt and Legend parts - although MiniArt have told me that they do intend to do a Tiran 5 in the future.  Maybe I'll wait...........

Tamiya goofed the wheels for the front axle.  The T55A introduced a noticeably enlarged reinforced front wheel hub, later commonly found as a replacement part on earlier T55s and T54s.  If anyone else is planning to use a Tamiya T55 or Tiran kit, MiniArt sell their wheel sets separately.  Their T62 set has 4 enlarged hub wheels (front and back on T62).  The old Tank brand resin replacement wheel pair is long OOP.

If I may, IDF antennas are quite rigid and when tied back they flex at the spring base and lie back almost straight rather than bending.

Great work and with a hairy stick!!!

Not sure what it is about the T55 family but they do have certain appeal and you've most certainly done it justice.

Excellant.

John.

Hi John and thank you for your most kind comments. I know your build well - I had it saved as a reference build for mine - so thank you for that! Thank you too for your assistance and support during my build. My final results would not be what they are without your help.

Kind regards,

Stix
