Great job Stix. That detail really pops out once the dry brushing  has been done. What's the Pledge like as I'd read many reports that the newer version of Klear was rubbish. Is this a different one again?

Up to your usual high standards my friend, excellent drybrushing and the washes are really bringing out the details on what appears to be another very nicely detailed Tamiya kit.

Thank you very much Craig and yes it does seem very crisp in detail which works better for my styles of painting and weathering.

Hi John and thank you.

With regards the Pledge:

The one on the left is what I am currently using. It was the version that was around in 2013 when I joined Britmodeller and started to try and learn the 'new ways' of modelling. From what I can gather it is slightly different from the original Klear - which the label name-checks - but, not ever having used any actual Klear, I cannot comment. This version seems to work really well and I mostly use it on aircraft builds before adding the decals and then over the decals when they are set. Over this I usually spray on Humbrol rattlecan matt varnish. I have never had any issues. I often use it as I have on this build to represent smaller glass areas - lights/goggles/etc.

I bought the second one, on the right, a few years later thinking it was going to be the same bottle as the first but it, obviously, wasn't. I haven't actually used it yet but, apparently, it may be different from the one on the left. If I get chance over the weekend I will have an experiment with it. If you can get one of the older bottles like the one on the left I can say it works the way it should do - well for me anyway.

Kind regards,

Stix

Thank you Glynn. I still have loads left in my first bottle of Pledge and I do try and look after it. Hope fully it will go on a bit longer.

Over the weekend I did do a bit more on this project but I didn't get as much time as I hoped - so there's not a lot to show.

First off I built up the parts for the cuppola:

Then I tried a test fit so see if it looked okay:

49478506608_688ea8c516_b.jpg

I got the tires painted on the outer road wheels - using a couple of coats of thinned Revell's Anthracite applied with a fine pointed brush:

Before too long I had the inner road wheels painted as well:

49478987646_11a9de2dde_b.jpg

I used some thinned Humbrol's Gunmetal to paint the metallic parts on the tracks - just a couple here as a sample:

49478987511_ebe1d135af_b.jpg

Finally I started to apply some of the decals:

49479209262_49e8fc4b8b_b.jpg

I cut these out right to the image to get rid of any carrier film as I find it just has silvering issues if left in place. I used a scalpel blade and steel ruler. The decals are applied straight onto the painted surface and, in the photo, they have had a layer of thinned Humbrol Matt Varnish applied over them.

I must add at this point, that these Tamiya decals seem much better than some of their usual offerings. They are much thinner than some Tamiya decals and they seperated from the backing paper much more quickly than some Tamiya decals do.

More next weekend.

Kind regards,

Stix

Excellent progress Stix. The wheels look great.

John.

Thank you John - I must admit I was quite pleased with how they looked once finished.

They do 48th and brush painted ,most impressive, and a lesson  for me at least with the decals 👍

Thank you for your comments Glynn.

Over the weekend I made more progress - I mostly concentrated on getting the wheels and the sides of the lower hull basically weathered before attaching the wheels and drive sprockets:

49511408906_c24f688b15_b.jpg

As the sides of the lower hull are not really going to be seen the weathering mostly consisted of stippling and dry-brushing with Gunship Grey and the lightened version of Desert Yellow.

Once the glue on the wheels had set I started to add the final weathering touches to them - chips in the paint - done with Humbrol's Gunmetal - very thinned and applied with a fine pointed brush over which and around I applied some very thinned Revell's Anthracite again using a fine pointed brush. The latter tones down some of the shine on the Gunmetal. Next I applied some Railmatch Light Rust in places and some streaks of various colours - again using a fine pointed brush.

Then I assembled the link and length tracks before finally getting the upper and lower hulls glued together:

49511637617_ed0416f3f3_b.jpg

At this point I couldn't resist a bit of a test fit of the turret in place. The barrel, cuppola and rear stowage basket are all just lodged in place. Please note I still have a lot of parts to add to the turret and some to the hull.

I have to say that, for a 1/48 scale kit, the detail looks really nice.

Next I'm going to add some basic weathering to the turret and hull before I start getting all the final parts glued together.

Comments and suggestions welcome.

Kind regards,

Stix

Looking good Stix. Are the anti slip surfaces moulded into the plastic?

John.

Hi John. Sorry for the slow reply - not been paying enough attention to this thread! Yes the anti slip surfaces are all moulded as part of the plastic - and very nicely done they are too - especially considering they are in 1/48.

It is looking great. The stippled dirt on the hull sides is a really nice effect, and the track pads look absolutely perfect!

Nice job Stix!

Looks like your close to the finish line with this one!

Cheers Greg 👍

Hi Greg and thank you. Yes you would think I'd be near the finish by now but, because of the way I weather, it means it often takes me longer at this stage to do the bits and pieces I want to. Plus I want add some stowage which I haven't even started yet. I'm not going to rush this to the finish - I also have an idea for a small base.

As I mentioned above - I have not been spending as much time on this as I'd like - partly because I'm doing a build in the 'In the Navy' GB and partly because other things keep getting in the way. When I have had chance to work on it I have mostly been doing the weathering I want to do before assembling everything finally. Mostly been adding small amounts of very thinned Humbrol's Gunmetal, Revell's Anthracite and Railmatch's Light Rust - to look like chips and general wear'n'tear - plus some thinned streaks of Light Grey, Gunship Grey and Anthracite. I have now glued a few parts together. I have still got a fair way to go with the weathering as well as final assembly:

I'm hoping to get all the weathering finished at the weekend and then I will try and glue on all the remaining parts. I will try and get the figure finished too and perhaps make a start on the stowage. We'll see..............

Comments and suggestions welcome.

Kind regards,

Looks absolutely smashing.

The Abrams still looks modern despite being a 1980s design. Not many tanks can pull that off.

You've really done justice to it.

Thank you Vaastav. You are very kind. Yes it is still a good looking tank. I must admit I'm more of a fan of older tanks but I couldn't resist some modern armour in 1/48. Really looking forward to seeing Tamiya's new 1/48 T-55 when it starts to appear later this month.....hopefully! Not exactly a modern tank but a nice change from WW2....although I prefer WW2 stuff.

Right I have been doing more on this project but not found the time to - a) take photos and - b) post updates on here.

Anyway - all the kit parts, apart from the figure, have now been added. The fit was pretty good. I have added some more weathering touches but there are still some more to do.......not a lot though as I'm trying to not make it look too weathered/battered. The weathering has all been done with various, very thinned acrylic paints and applied with either stippling brushes or very fine pointed brushes.

Some photos of what it currently looks like:

I have to say I am very impressed with the detail Tamiya have put into this.

Good news Tamiya is keeping the 1/48 afv line alive with this abrams and and indeed their new t-55. They've always been a brand apart. For modern armour 1/48 is  (for me) the ideal trade-of between size and details but I don miss any details here.

Outstanding work. You pulled this of with a brush? I'll be taking notes if you don't mind. Brush painting is quite rewarding, but it takes practice and I'm nowhere near.  Awesome work.

Hi Ernst and thank you very much for your kind comments. I totally agree - Tamiya are really superb at producing 1/48 armour subjects and I too am really pleased they are producing more modern era stuff nowadays.

And all my kits have to be brush painted as I don't own an airbrush and don't have anywhere I could use one anyway. I have made a (rather long and dull) video - which is on YouTube - about how I do my basic painting with flat brushes.

Thank you again.

Well I actually finished this a while back but haven't had the time to post the final photos - which can be found: HERE

Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to comment in this thread.

Take care and stay well.
