Do 335 Pfeil 1/72

Recommended Posts

Happy not quite Christmas from me to me. Don't really know what if any kits have been bought for me by family beyond an Airfix Victor (because I had to order it), so I got myself something suitable for the GB. Masking set also bought of course.

7c02060a08a4edf4086e264a220a08eb.jpg

I also may have just ordered a Tamiya 1/48 V1 on next day delivery because I needed a paint and well Amazon won't ship paints on their own and I may have needed airbrush cleaner, the local wargaming store stopped selling that and my trip there just to get some ended in 20 quid of other purchases......

A productive day for getting modelling supplies.

I'll probably either do this on the 26th, 28th or 29th depending when I'm working. I'm hoping for a 12 hour total build time like with a previous build I did of a spitfire prxix because I woke up and wanted a new spitfire one day. This kit is somewhat bigger though....

Looking forward to seeing this one built. I’m sure you [will] have looked at some reviews, which bring up the problem of one of the propeller blades facing the wrong way from the other two!

Regards,

Adrian

Yes I did see something about what but I thought it meant they were all wrong, not just one... I had to grab my kit to check and yes, you are right! Should be a simple matter of removing it and glueing it back on correctly right?

I have the Frog version of this, its a lot bigger than you think.

Hopefully this will encourage lots of people ( like me ) to build theirs rather than keep looking at it in the box !

Good luck with this one 👍

Cheers Pat

Who put tape on the decal paper?!?!

Ugh.... Must very carefully remove that

c11915e71c8d2ef963949c350b89fd69.jpg

Added a bit of nose weight just in case... Probably a bit too much since the centre of gravity is just shy of the back of the forward wheel well now.

Cockpit parts were all painted up in Citadel's Mechanicus Standard Grey, which isn't too far off RLM66 when you give it a dark wash which I did once the fuselage halves were together. The instrument panel decal was applied, but was far oversized so some trimming was required.

Anyway, the Dornier is taking shape. The cockpit is sealed up and the nose part is on. At least this one isn't going to be late for anything, wearing a watch that big!

Another hour has gone by and family has turned up; my dad's birthday is today so there will be distractions from this build along the way.

d819223cec072eae508ed520ba6fffd7.jpg

Having looked over plenty of photos for reference, I decided the best course of action was a caramel latte with extra milk.

I also added the nose gear as all the landing gear appears to have been painted in the same colour as the underside of the fuselage, assuming the lone surviving example is painted accurately that is. Decals are for the one anyway, so even if it's not accurate, this could easily be the museum example as it is today.

It was also at this point that the Blitzenbuild method of not looking at the instructions and guessing because it's faster has found the limits of its use.

Left landing gear assembled...

Wait.... That's a thing that shouldn't be left on left on there!

6360a55b7947c1d4ff0ff6d1b8bc52d1.jpg

Nope! Just ended up on top of the gear somehow...

58bb0fdec74afafcf7540669b57b5fb4.jpg

And it's not the left gear.... It's the right gear... The instructions have left and right mixed up....

Then I had to go eat with family because apparently eating is something that is required for humans to do. That took an hour of time up.... I resisted drinking too much as I want to have the model at least presentable and not a backwards landing gear or the props on the wrong end or something.

I'll have a proper drink to celebrate the end of this build when it is finished.

So here's three(ish) hours of progress:

Primed and pre shaded by 3:52

These were done just before that, RLM70 props.

The painting instructions are ---- very bad indeed. I'd ignore them and use pictures of the one in the Udvar-Hazy centre as a reference.

RLM65 underside and masked

RLM81 on, masking ahead.

Taking a while.....

Almost there.....

Done!

4db7eb882f84b232174ca79f4e9cfcdd.jpg

Over a full hour later, the RLM82 was on.

The paintjob is not 100% accurate but it is, in my opinion, pretty close in terms of the shape of the camouflage. The colours however are not. My RLM81 is far too light...

This image from the link above shows my RLM81 to be quite far off. I also think my 82 is not right either. But oh well, I like the look of mine.

I think that link explains what I've done... I've used what appears to be RLM81 'v3' where I was looking for the 'v2' version.

...nice progress mate - it is looking really good.

Steve

Mm it's that citadel primer I use that mucks it up... Won't come off at all without a good scrubbing with isopropanol. Best to do that in a bath since it's so messy.

I really need to find a good primer I can put through my airbrush... I tried Vallejo, it's rubbish, nothing like the rest of their range (which I love).

Here's my Casio collection:

Chris

I love the look of the nice simple Casio watch. One of my mates at secondary school had the same identical Casio watch as me, and another had one in a different colour.

One time I had both the identical watches on, I think I kept the right one at the end of that day!

They were great watches for working in the extraction plant where I used to work. Waterproof and fairly cheap. The batteries are easy to replace, too.

The left one is at least 30 years old and the right one is about 20 years old. Both are still working, though I haven't worn either since I retired almost 5 years ago. Today was the first time I've taken them out of the drawer where I chucked them.

Ok so the model has been finished in under 12 hours! Very pleased with that... Not so pleased with the decals the kit has....

Anyways, stepping back in time a little to when I was yet to suffer with the quality of Hobbyboss's decals....

The gear legs all have a red bit like the preserved one.

Gloss coat on, ready to suffer...

8fc455df6385cbbf162dc8c108e914e9.jpg

A lot of yelling later the decals were completed on one side (although here I'd started the other side by the time I took a picture). They really like to break and to get into many small fragments.... My trouble only just began

More had shattered into pieces and the V required surgery to get on

Finished! And finished almost an hour before that 12 hour mark. Put on a matt varnish, which isn't that matt...

The gear also received a wash

Wheel wells got a wash as well before it was finished.

Canopy masking ended up on but not the best I've ever seen.

This thing dwarfs the Me262! Incidentally that 262 was the first model I posted on here. I have another in the stash to build in the other scheme from the box.

bb0248d10e29b5ce234c9d7e2d75b1a2.jpg

Certainly dwarf my newest 109, recently (nearly) finished but I'm about a week behind on posting on its thread in WIP. So sneak preview here.

And this is so late being posted because I went to have a well earned drink and then got roped into playing a board game

Ah well mine is only about two or three years old, got it after my old one packed in.

Hi Adam,

My sources mostly say that Luftwaffe planes were not totally matt but had a slight sheen so you are ok there as far as I am concerned. In Ullmann's book on camo he has a so called "official" scheme for the 335 in 81/82/65, but by that stage I would have thought 76 was more likely. There are wide variations in interpretation of 81/82 and Ullmann does have at least 2 variations of both in his book. For my recent build of the Frog He162 I used the older White Ensign version of Colourcoats and they were somewhat darker than yours, but not like the Smithsonian version which looks like 2 greens! I think my 81 is the "Braunviolett" version.

DSC01557

Whatever, your "Pfeil" looks good to me.

Personally I like my models as Matt as I can get them unless they were gloss, in which case they sure painted satin.

So much variation can be irritating sometimes and useful at others... This is a case of it being irritating.

Nice Heinkel as well there
