How should I go about making a convincing tarp sheet for an aircraft canopy? I'm wanting to do this for a 1/72 Bf109 I screwed up the canopy on

Thin tissue paper applied with dilute white glue with some tiedowns added from very fine wire or transparent thread.

 

Sounds like a sensible way of saving the kit

Yes, the tissue paper and white glue method works a treat.  The bonus is that white glue, once dried, can be peeled off - carefully! - and you can try again if you don't like the first attempt.
