Beechraft Model 18 Twin Beech, 1/72nd conversions

Recommended Posts

I have a chance to get one of the vac Beech 18s for not much, also have the stock PM kit. Might put one on floats or a tricycle landing gear. At least I have instructions now.

Hi Moa

I will watch with much interest, I have built the PM kit previously and as I brush paint usually with thinned Humbrol Enamels used a thick unthinned coat or two along the panel trenched and knocked it back to the main surface and they weren't too bad .  Coincidentally I have been looking at the Revell 48 scale kit in the stash.

Good luck with your builds, great start so far.

Seasons greetings to you and yours.

All the best

Chris

They really are turning into a lovely pair! (Sorry, I have been watching too many "Carry On" films today.) :fool: Bloody Marys + Mead + Calvados + Beer makes for a very silly Martian.

A pause for the annual clean-up.
This is the time when I usually find those parts that went to the Twing and Twang dimensions -like the bits on the mat-, hidden in the strangest places:

A full pound of discarded sharp objects:

And I thought I will retire the old mat and gift myself a new one. I humbly think I deserve it, after completing 27 models during the year:

27!  And to such a high standard, well done.  Makes my 5 so-so models look like a poor effort.

AW

Firstly, not so so-so 😉

Secondly, having a 75 hour-day, and a 800 day-year helps me a lot. But then you have to live in another arm of the galaxy, which has its disadvantages. And the commute to come here post in BM is dismal.

The ejector marks are hidden below a cushion:

The "upgrade" parts on the Encore kit that don't upgrade anything at all are discarded:

Some components of the Encore kit are glued together:

The resin props are assembled. To the right what I did first, that is drilling the blade to insert a metal pin, but (to the left) I decided later to just drill a socket on the cuff and glue the blades in:

No significant difference, but you get two spare props:

You get one spare cylinder per set, which is a good thought on part of the manufacturer:

To be thrown on the floor as a sacrifice to the dreaded carpet monster! (Yesss- the first zinger of the new year!) 😜

Well, I think I may drop the Monster an IOU little note, and pass the props to the other Beech build (as a hand-me-down), so I can save the Khee-Kha resin props -that I had already set aside for it- for yet another build for the future.

Cheers

I've been following this build with interest- glad I got rid of my PM C-45's and kept my Rareplanes kit- seems like the late Gordon Stevens did many vacforms that have not been eclipsed by newer injected or vacform kits. (Going to do  Buddy Hackett, Mickey Rooney, and Jim Backus figures in the cockpit?) Outstanding job on the props, Moa- how will you do the prop pitch counterweights- small plasticard discs cut with a punch?

That it exactly how I make them. Here an axle/hub I did for the Potez 62

A quick visit to the references of the two planes I want to model revealed that one of them used  different props, which I proceeded to replicate re-purposing discarded three-blade ones from -iirc- a Fokker F.VII I built time ago :

Blades are cut off and new hubs made of styrene tube and rod:

Finely-stretched sprue is used for the securing bolts, later to be trimmed at the same length:

The new props to match photos of one of my selected planes are almost done:

Some parts are painted, together with other projects:

If you don't want to deal with the kit's engines on any of the two kits, you can get some aftermarket ones, as I did, as a back-up or eventual choice, depending on the results with the native parts:
