YC-130 details needed

I want to make the YC-130 prototype in 1/72. I can get an Ozmods A model conversion set. What I want is good drawings or list of the differences from the later ones. I have a Roman nose already and an Italeri kit. I just know the sponsons are a little shorter.

See if any of these links are helpful- I don't ever recall seeing any scale drawings of the YC-130, but that doesn't mean none exist. There is a C-130 website that you might look up. The videos were included so that you might be able to approximate the height/length of the sponsons by comparing them to the size of the national insignia or height of the US Air Force lettering, whose dimensions can be found on the internet. The last link contains numerous good detail photos of the YC-130 that might be useful. It would make a very handsome conversion- I say go for it!

I had one time harboured the idea of doing something similar, but I eventually gave up, for lack of being able to find much of anything solid on the differences.  I know it had the rounded vertical tail tip and the C-130A type nacelles.  The Italeri kits are a never-built combination of the short nacelles of the C-130A with the tail ends of the nacelles on the lower wings common to all other C-130 models.  On the A's the aft part of the nacelle carried back across the flaps.

Thanks, these bits are useful. I did find out the sponsons are just shorter, the prop line is just ahead of it. i wonder if the top of the fin is just the cap part that's different. It looks like the rudder goes straight up and not the little jutting forward tip. I now see the lights in the nose to. I can't tell if it has the large left side loading door behind the cockpit. It'll be a little while before I do this one.

It's the cowlings you're saying are to short? do you know how much shorter? i see with the resin conversion the rear parts are replaced.

The nacelle forward if the firewall is the right length, but the shapes and details are wrong. The aft end under the wing is too short.

ok, I'll have remember that and find the differences.

Are you sure about this? Looking at the YC-130 and C-130A photos in my last link, it looks to me like the leading edge of the sponson is in line with prop warning stripe, and the rear edge lines up with the paratroop exit door. Other than the nose  radome added later in production , I think the length of the YC-130 and C-130A fuselages are the same. Am I just seeing things?

The Italeri kit plastic is basically an E model. The sponsons were extended on the H model. The shorter sponsons on the Italeri kit are fine for the early models including the A.

C-130s until the FY 61 model Es had the forward cargo door.  One peculiarity of the early C-130As until the 56 year models was the provision of three windows on the upper fuselage on each side, two before and one after the wing. There also was a window above the cockpit, for the Nav, I think.

Look at the photo of the two YC-130s flying. You can see the three windows.

Lockheed : YC-130 : Hercules

The YC/C-130As also had a door covering the gtc exhaust.  GAS TURBINE COMPRESSOR (GTC) Notice no openings before the landing gear door.

Hard to see but notice the exhaust is left uncovered on this C-130E model. It is the narrow vertical opening just before the landing gear door. The gtc also had a split door covering the intake.

I read about the sponson length somewhere. I know you can see the prop stripe just ahead on the early ones and later ones the stripe runs over the front of them, just by a little. I do see the nose gear doors are different and the crew door is farther forward and hinged difeerently. I know the first five I think Canadian Air Force ones had the side door. don't know if they were traded, sold or what.

I couldn't see the GTC in the link you sent unless i missed it. Is it the small oval shape on the right side?

Early H’s had the same sponsons as the A through E.

Most C-13Es and initial production C-130Hs were basically identical externally.  It wasn't until well into C-130H production that the APU changed and the sponson front ends got longer and had different shapes and details.

The shape of the front end was different on the longer sponsons.

Because there is an ECS (Environmental Control System) inlet tacked onto the front of it along with the other ECS inlet just below and behind the cockpit.
