AT LAST F16 CJ, 1/32 scale Tamiya.

Recommended Posts

OK folks, first of all I would like to thank the members of this forum for giving me the confidence to build this kit.

There is a little prologue to this WIP.

Many years ago, when I was a spotty teenager I would look through the Tamiya catalogue and wish that I had the money to buy and build on of their wonderful 1/32nd scale kits back in the mid 70`s. Sadly, that would never happen in a month of Sundays, so I just dreamed on.

Fast forward 30 odd years, and a visit to my local WH Smiths to buy a fishing magazine I saw a Tamiya Mag with an article on their new 1/32nd scale F 16 so I purchased the mag ( I always wanted to see how they went together).

After reading the Mag I wanted to get the kit, so I legged down to our local hobby shop FRATTON MODELS and bought it, with a little discount to I might add. Once I got it home and opened the box I nearly had an accident, so after a visit to the bathroom I had a look through what was there and decided there and then that it was out of my skill range, that was back in `05. Now 15 years later I feel like I can tackle this kit.

So, the obligatory box top pic.

IMG_1843

And what was inside it.

IMG_1844

13 styrene runners and one of clear.

In the blue box.

IMG_1851

And the other side of the P.E.

IMG_1852

The decals and masks.

IMG_1845

And the "Remove before flight" tags.

IMG_1846

I am going to do this scheme, with the "Tiger Meet " markings (thankfully, not one of those amazing colour schemes seen on other aircraft).

IMG_1847

The Mag that made me get this kit, and will act as a guide to building her.

IMG_1849

And the other one too ( It was a two-parter ).

IMG_1850

There will be some first`s for me on this build, metal U/C and seat-belt making (should be fun).

Anyhow, enough for now as coffee calls.

All comments welcome.

Right, after a coffee and fag I sorted out what was in the blue box.

Lots of screws and pins.

IMG_1853

The tyres and poly caps, plus pitots and string (For the chocks they supply.)

IMG_1854

The canopies come like bacon? smoked or unsmoked, though both have a seam to be carefully removed.

IMG_1855

A substantial counter weight provided.

IMG_1857

And a pair lovely white metal legs to support her on ( she weighs in at about 400 grammes).

IMG_1858

I shall leave it at that for now.

Another perusal of the destruction's before deciding what to do next.

Shall be following this with great interest Simon.  Not my usual scale; but I got some hours on the F16 C/D at MacDill AFB in 1990 (I guess they would have been block 30 or block 40) and whilst I don't remember much about the jet I've retained an interest.   Looks like a cracking kit.

Will watch with great interest!!! Box contents look comprehensive, down to the cord for the chocks! Have fun with it!

Don't break my heart on this one or I may have to bust your jaw!

(Quack recalling a Spookytooth reference from his yoof........sure I've got the vinyl in the attic)

Nostalgic Quack.

Reading the write up and build in the Tamiya mag they said that was one of the best (at time of writing (2005)).

Totally in for this, Simon! :Tasty:

Ciao

You are more than welcome here G.

Mince pies and sausage rolls in the kitchen and beer in the fridge good people.

Right, I made a start.

According to the instructions (which I will not follow precisely (I will jump around a bit to keep the build going)) they say start with the engine trolley.

So off we go.

Yes, nice mouldings, but some small ejector pins marks.

IMG_1859

IMG_1861

And a couple of sink marks.

IMG_1860

A drop or two of Mr Surfacer 500 should hopefully do the job.

Leave to dry for tonight, then a rub down with a fine sanding block .

That is all for today.

All comments welcome.

Excellent start to the thunderchicken! While not nearly my favourite jet, it's definitely my scale, and I know I will one day need to grit my teeth and build one up myself. You definitely got a follow out of me!  Quick question as you said you'll be doing a tiger meet bird, are you going to attempt the Have-Glass paint scheme?

Thank you sir, yes I am doing the decals from her but not the paint job, to keep my sanity and what`s left of my hair I shall be following the scheme in the instructions.

OK folks, a little update.

Getting the trolley together, simple enough, if you take care to remove some awkward seam lines.

IMG_1862

And trolley wheels went together sweetly.

IMG_1864

There some lovely detail on them, so has the seat too.

IMG_1865

The cushion part is just placed into position to keep it all square.

And it makes it easier for painting later.

Anyhow, time for a coffee.

Big scale, more details... I see .... :D

You are not to far wrong there G.

There is some damn fine rendering  on a lot of the parts.

First of all I made a mistake, there are 15 runners not 13.

Right, the engine bits, internals.

IMG_1866

With the tail pipe inners added.

IMG_1867

And the panels from the centre.

IMG_1868

The ejector pin marks will not be visible once built, cleverly hidden behind the fans.

Hopefully I can get some priming done by the end of the week, weather and life permitting that is.

Can't wait to see how that F110 engine builds up!

It doesn`t look to bad sir, the fit is impressive so far.

Ciao

Thank you Giorgio, it`s slow work at the moment due to the fact that I cannot get ant spraying done .

Very nice intro indeed Simon!  :clap2:

Thanks Tony, as I stated at the beginning of this thread it`s thanks to the people on this forum for giving me the confidence to start her. 15 years is a long time to have a kit in the stash and not start it.

Small update:

I made a boo boo yesterday, I glued an engine  panel on the wrong way but thankfully was able to rectify it.

IMG_1869

That`s better.

Also cleaned a few of the engine gearbox and rear cover?

IMG_1870

Not much else done yet, the wife had a dental appointment this morning (an extraction , ouch) and we have friends visiting this afternoon but will see what I can do later.

All comments welcome.

I do too, I thank the general for introducing me to him. As far as the gearbox, IIRC that is the generator, but I know F108's

The instructions say the gear box sir, but there again, I am just a humble plastic basher LOL

Good start Simon, looks like a cracking kit!

Keith

No vol-la-vents though thankfully.

Welcome a board sir, plenty of room.

Thanks @giemme and @The Baron.

Well, I managed to get some more done, not a lot though.

First up the tail fin.

IMG_1871

Poly caps in place.

All together apart from the rudder.

IMG_1872

Even the vents have moulded separately .

IMG_1873

Some of the main wheel bay bits, I left the spar off to ease painting later.

IMG_1874

The odd sink mark to fill.

IMG_1875

And finally part of the engine bay?

IMG_1876

Some lovely detail which probably will not be seen once together.

That`s it for today.

Thanks @giemme, and @Fulcrum Guy, it is fitting together like a dream, hardly any fettling needed at all.

OK folks, sorry for the delay but life rears it`s head again but was able to get this done today , so far that is.

Tail feathers first, nicely moulded even a numb nut like cannot mess this up.

IMG_1877

Together with the static whips mounts added.

IMG_1878

Rudder next, the same again.

IMG_1879

0.5 mm holes to fit the discharge whips into.

IMG_1880

She is going to be big, this is the bottom half of her.

IMG_1881

A couple of the pylons done, 5 bits in total , 3 for the pylon and 2 poly caps inside to fit the stores to (and remove if you want to)

IMG_1882

And finally for now, the nose wheel bay door was in 2 parts, lovely detail .

IMG_1883

Time for coffee and a bite to eat.

Moving along at a steady pace! What will you be using for the discharge wicks?

Thank you good sir for unintentionally correcting my faux pas.

The wicks come supplied 0.5 mm stainless steel, pre-cut.
