If you consider removing some of the weathering nevertheless, I've got good results with Micro Finishing Cloth (ca. 3200), wrapped around a stick, wet-sanding the areas I want to reduce with a small circular movement. Of course you need to have a coat of clear underneath the weathering. The only areas I would touch anyway are the decals - everything else looks great.

But enough said - your models are excellent builds!

Thanks for the kind advice, might give that a whirl when i’m back at the desk.

i have a coat of matt under the weathering As i thought i was at that stage, maybe just the white parts of some decals might help.

  • 2 weeks later...

well the spinner and liquid mask experiment obviously didnt work 🙃

in the end i used tamiya tape for curves and pulled it with force around the spinner.

the result will do for me. Its kinda there.

I can see the light at the end of the tunnel for one of these damn things

Glad to see you're enjoying it! ;)

Looking very good, nice shading, and I like the exhaust stain, what I can see of it.

Rovin' Rhoda Is fast approaching the finishing line.

Heres a bunch of shots from this evenings escapades chaps.

I installed the fuel tank rails and their PE and finished and installed the tanks themselves and the undercarriage was installed.

So theres just a few things more now.
I show some of the details here too. I know its overweathered and wish I’d resisted in hindsight but it is what it is now.

I agree. A bit more weathered than as she might have been, but a most a most impressive build and a great looking model. I like it a lot, certainly not your average sanitised model - as I too frequently produce. Good job Paul.

Aircraft #2 is approaching completion too now.
This one is a little cleaner. Heres all the remaining bits...

The resin shrouded exhausts are a pain to paint. 10th of mm’s over zealous on the green paint and it looks awful but thankfully its passable here.

After all the hard work realigning the height of the tail wheel, some idiot goes and knocks it off

When all is said and done post build, i have enough leftovers for 2 more mustangs with AM

and decals for 10’s of schemes.
So i guess I will be in the next KUTA gb😄

It’s been an intensive building weekend. I got loads done.

Aircraft #2 should be complete tonight and hence this build thread will conclude then.

I’ve been a lot more descrete with chipping etc here on #2.

I’ve started today using a light with a magnifying glass built in.
It was tricky to get used to initially but when you have, its really good for detail.

So it allowed slightly more descrete chipping this time.

Exhaust staining is perhaps too heavy though from previous rounds though.
(Exhausts are installed now too.)

The gear has been installed and this time i put on the main struts and oleos,

then the wheels,

then the doors last.

49603452133_e37467712f_h.jpg

This was much easier with the eduard kit than installing a pre built unit in one as i had previously done on aircraft #1. It allowed easier fitting and better alignment.
I have given the large doors a shorter hydraulic droop this time

49603452123_2cc4ad5d37_h.jpg

I have given this aircraft a little ‘story’ by giving it mismatched tires and 1 silver gear door. Suggesting perhaps a heavy landing and damaged and replace port wheel / door, i don’t know but anyway I like this quirkyness.

The tanks are less weathered than last time also. And again very slightly differing finishes on each.

49603953766_e99c83bd45_h.jpg

I installed the antis-sway braces (is that what they are called?!) on the tanks rather than the rails for easier construction this time.

Think thats where she stands now.

Final update later i guess.

Thank you John.

And #2’s done and in the gallery! Hurrah! :yahoo:

Thanks for tuning in and for the advice along the way to those who helped me out.

Its been such an agonizing process these builds but now they are done and I learnt a lot:
mostly i’ve learnt to resist on weathering on my next build and work more delicately.
I’m learning to work with a magnifying lens to that end.
I learn’t that alclad is extremely delicate compared to ak xtreme metals.
I learnt Eduards decals can be a bit iffy but their kits are superb.

So at the end of the day it’s all good when you learn stuff - it makes the next build even better :clap2:

hope you all like the final result, I might complete the other mustangs in the KUTA later in the year.
Cheers fellas good luck with the rest of your P-51 builds. I will follow with interest. Thanks for watching.
