Tamiya 1/48 F-14D Tomcat

Recommended Posts

Morning guys,

Finished this one up the other day. A really nice kit that flew together, other than the fact that Tamiya don't seem to want you to build it wheels up, so some scratch building was required to close up the gear wells. The decals were also a little thick, I've not built many planes yet so I'm quite pleased with how this came out. :)

Very nice, the weathering is convincing without being overdone and I especially like the in-flight display that I always wish to see more of 😎

Just one thing to be aware of, the final wing sweep position on the F-14, as shown in some of your photos, is a purely "parking" position to reduce wingspan. In flight the wings should never be like this. Full sweep in flight is when the leading edge of the wing is perfectly in line with the wing glove.

Thanks Guys. :)

Andy, the stand is home made, a lump of Walnut and some 10mm acrylic rod.

Collin, I'm not sure what the part is called, but there is a small section of the rear bay doors that if the wheels were down would lay against the side of the intake trunking. The side of this that would show if the doors were closed has some deep depressions which could be filled but the whole part would still be too thick. I got around it by tracing the shape onto plasticard and sanding that to fit (pics below). Other than that, the rest of the parts need some thinning to fit, and as there isn't any internal structure to hold them I added a few bits of plasticard for them to rest on while the glue set.

Alan, what gave me awayl. 🤭 Seriously though, when I was looking at reference pics many actual Tomcats are far dirtier than mine. The pic below is where I took my inspiration from. At least I didn't throw any mud at it. :)
