eduard Mig 21 bis...to bison?

Has Anyone ever tried to convert Eduard Mig 21bis to "Bison" version?....

physically i believe the canopy is the most distinct feature, being a wraparound bubble canopy... I read somewhere its a derivation on the mig29 canopy ...any suggestions on how to achieve that?

or if aftermarket conversion is available?

haven't noticed many major physical differences other than that

I can see at least one other major physical difference straight away from your pictures, the Bison has some additional bumps above the wings. Then it depends the detail you want to get into but again I can easily see a few different aerials.

The Bison also has a completely revamped cockpit with digital displays and a new HUD. That would be a lot of work to change unless you find some aftermarket.

Just playing spot-the-difference between the two images youve posted, aside from the canopy and wing bumps:

-Bis has antennae on end of the tail. none on Bison

-Bis has bulges on side of tail, none on bison

-Bison has some form of probe on front of tail, none on Bis

-Bison has much more pronounced ecm probe behind tail vs Bis unit

-Relocated Pitot tube on Bison

-Additional antennae on Bison nose

-2 additional vertical 'fins' fore and aft of the canopy

-Additional 'bumps' on  Bison Nose

Depending on how much you raid the spares box and how accurate a reproduction you want to make, it should be possible. It would seem there isn't much out there in the kit world for the Bison variant at the moment.

I was thinking of a flight mode build with pilot taking the attention away from cockpit details and yeah some scratch building of display panels is in order

W00t...thanks for the pre-made list man...i was already prepared for a ton of sculpting with putty..this would really come handy ...just the canopy problem is baffling me...

Given all the new MiG-21 kits that have been released lately from KP, Eduard, and Modelsvit, I wouldn't be surprised to see a Bison eventually coming down the pipeline.

Hmmm, not sure I share your optimism @Space Ranger but would be delighted to be proved wrong!!!

Amen!!!

Not sure where anyone got any kind of MiG-29 connection with that canopy.  There is no part of the MiG-29 that would fit a MiG-21.  They are quite simply totally different shapes in every respect.  Lots of aircraft have had wrap around windscreens fitted to their existing structure (the USAF tested it on the F-4E before it was retired).

Right, this MIG-29 windscreen thing did keep bugging me so i did a bit of a google trawl to see what i could find out,  heres some key notes from around the net

The ultimate MiG modification was the Indian Air Force’s MiG-21-93, which the Indians called the Bison. It had a MiG-29 bubble canopy and wraparound windscreen; far more capable radar; a helmet-mounted weapons sight; and beyond-visual-range, fire-and-forget missile capability

The canopy has a small rear view mirror, a flat bullet proof windscreen and and air-conditioned cabin. Armour plating forward and aft of cockpit. The Bison is equipped with a frameless windshield and a 'Bubble' Canopy. New canopy, single-piece windshield and new canopy made of stressed acrylic composites

In the MiG-21-93, the windscreen goes 'inside' the nose like in a MiG-29 to improve front visibility

Sorry for the link and pic overload, i hope its ok! But this was bugging me :D - i think there has been a bit of mistranslation thats lead to a false assumption that the canopy comes from a Mig 29. I believe that the new Bison canopy is INSPIRED by the 29's canopy and approach of positioning the canopy in a similar way to the 29, but is its own, bespoke for just the Mig21, canopy. i think that it was probably a throwaway comment 'oh thats similar to a 29's canopy' that has been taken and run as fact.
