Marklo
And it’s silver again. I think I’ll scribe the panel lines as the finish I’m getting here is closer to the real thing than the foil which I reckon will be a bit too shiny. So the plan is to let this dry thoroughly, scribe and river it as well as adding the ailerons back in, then a top coat of the silver.

Marklo
One of the many layers of black hadn’t set causing the silver to congeal like the skin on a rice pudding and damage easily, scraped most of it off, leaving this. Bad, but at least it’s set. May need to redo the windscreen as well, sigh... Nothing else for it but to sand the whole thing back. When the black is gone it’s done But on a positive note at least it’s salvageable and I’ll end up with a perfect surface before painting the nmf. I think I’ll stick with primer and the humbrol rattle can for this. Edited August 3, 2020 by Marklo
RichieW
Don't be put off Marklo. I'm enjoying this build and know you will get it over the finish line. Right decision to sand back and refinish. The end result will be all the more satisfying for overcoming the setback.
Marklo
Back on track, my forearms will never be the same again. But on a plus note the surface is much better. Given a brush coat of Tamiya neutral grey to see if it needs any more filling or sanding. I’m A few cracks, sanded through the tail tips as still not 100% with the rear roofline, but hopefully the last browns of filler before scribing the panel lines. Relieved..,, Edited August 4, 2020 by Marklo
Marklo
started on new control surfaces. Easier than hacking the off it’s from the wings into shape. Test fitting the tail cone. Of course once it went in I couldn’t get it out, so flowed some CA in to fix it in place. Thankfully it’s spot on to the drawings. As you can see still doing a little filling and sanding. I’m not accepting any imperfections in this one. I also fitted the inner nose of the engine ( which is now loose in the front as plan a and plan b for securing it didn’t work, and of course I now can’t get it out, but I do have a plan c and a more drastic plan d), managed to polish the windscreen back to life and made some milliput wheels. Marklo
Inching towards the finish like. Still not entirely happy with the horizontal stabilisers, hopefully the lSt round of filling and sanding ( how many times have I said that on this build )

AdrianMF
Keep fighting! The second round of sanding (and a uniform coat of grey) is giving you a nice surface finish. Regards, Adrian
Marklo
Wheels, axels fitted evened up a bit and hub edges added. Need to make some slotted discs for the inner and outer hubs. New control surfaces skinned, just need a bit of fitting in the wing apertures. Canopies dry fitted, and ready for scribing and riveting. I got fed up with filling and sanding the tail so instead I skinned the horizontal stabs with 10 thou Tamiya pla paper. I’m declaring sanding finished at this stage Edited August 10, 2020 by Marklo
Marklo
Control surfaces fitted and stuck on. The contour of the undersurface of the wing needs a bit of adjustment, but not too bad a fit. Running out of excuses to go scribing and riveting
Marklo
Did a bit of reproducing of the nose. I’ve realised that the plans I’m working off are a little off from the real thing. So studying the photos and reproducing as needed. Mostly correct now, but the area where the trailing edges of the horizontal stabilisers meet is still a bit off, needs to be sharper and a bit more contoured, nothing a bit of filler and sanding won’t fix. Dod I say I was finished filling , hmm well I think I’m nearly there. But at this stage I’m determined to make this thing flawless.

Marklo
Undercarriage fabricated. Needs a bit of detailing and painting, but happy enough so far. PPP cleaned up. May need a little more filler but just about done. I’ve reshaped the tail and am much happier with it. I’ll fit the main gear next then it’s on to the scribing. ( I’m really trying to put this one off aren’t I ) Just leaving the intake cone, paintwork and decals (I’ve ordered a set of WWII Italian roundels off eBay, which hopefully are in the post. Marklo
The recontoured tail area. About as sanded as it can get. Trailing edges need a little neatening up, liquid green stuff and a bit more sanding. Oleos get a scissors link, trunnions and brake lines. Silver paint and hubs from punched drilled 10 thou card. Black touch up and maybe a wash to highlight the detail needed. Next up that scribing. Rivet-r, Scribe-r ,scriber I bought from eBay and 6 inch ruler ( which reminds me of some terrible jokes) Edited August 12, 2020 by Marklo
Marklo
Standing on its own two legs. Dry fitted of the u/c. Need a little more rake, but not bad. I’m always struck by how short the u/c is for such a big plane. Only the gear doors left to fabricate. I’ll probably leave them till after it’s painted. Odd week ( COVID notwithstanding) I was bidding on a job lot of 7 1/144 jets in evil bay and was winning until 23 seconds to go, was prepared to go a bit higher but couldn’t refresh and bid in time. Arghhhh .... Was nearly rear ended this afternoon, hmm. But on the plus side they did miss me. SWMBO has a gastric bug And ironically, although run off my feet looking after her, I’m still getting more bench time. The Cat is sick again but he is on the mend. But on a plus note, the Caproni’s going well. I ordered a 1/144 F15, F16 and F18 as well as a big bottle of Tamiya thinners from Hannants for nearly the same amount as the lost eBay deal ( in fairness 2 of the kits were F14s and one was a second F18, which I didn’t really need) I found the missing oleo from the Mig 21 so now the Gamecock is the only repair left. Marklo
All the panel lines pencilled on. Mostly correctly Port upper wing scribed and riveted. The Rivet-r effect is quite subtle, which I like but I hope it’s not too subtle to survive a coat of paint.
Marklo
More tinkering with the undercarriage. studying the photos I realised that there is a wheel cover but it’s attached to the wing and is closed over when the u/c is extended, Italian engineering I ask you. So two disks punched and fitted. Scribing and riveting done. Not perfect but not bad either, should look good under a coat of paint. I’m going to spray the rear white, mask off the cross and the stripe and then give it a coat of humbrol silver, both rattle cans. Dangerously close to the finish at this point. Marklo
Just can’t leave this thing alone rattlecan white, many thin coats. Gave the wings and front a bit of a spray to act as a preshade for the silver, may give it a shot if black as well. I’ll mask off the markings tomorrow and give a coat of silver. Feeling dangerous after that, I am now downloading the iOS 14 beta, I may be gone for some time... Edited August 13, 2020 by Marklo
Old Man
An inspiring project, Sir! You are setting yourself quite a row to hoe, aiming to get this smooth enough for a metal paint finish. If it isn't coals to Newcastle regarding foil --- With a bottle of Micro-Scale foil adhesive, ordinary kitchen foil can be used instead of the commercial product. A good deal of shine can be taken off by boiling the foil with eggshells. Another, trickier way, is to immerse foil in bleach along with some copper and some lead.
Marklo
masked for silver first coat of silver on. Finish isn’t too bad, but I can see myself spending a while chasing small blemishes, the only saving grace is that the real thing has lots of dents s as bad oil canning so I can buff things down and won’t need a perfect finish.
Marklo
Getting there, paint, buff, full, buff, repeat. I hate nmf’s Edited August 15, 2020 by Marklo
RichieW
Good perseverance Marklo, it's paying off. Your Caproni is coming together nicely.
Marklo
Not perfect but not bad. I’m polishing it down with a microfibre cloth. Then a little touch up. Undercarriage fitted. Just needs gear doors s as bad struts as well as the rail for the sliding canopies. Size comparison with my Albatross DII it’s a big bus for me.
