Any kits of the Boeing 314 Flying Boat?

A far as I know, there are three kits of the 314: in 1/144 by Airfix and at 1/72 by Anigrand (resin) and Combat Models (vac). The Airfix is currently oop (but obtainable) and the others are currently in production.

As far as I know, the Anigrand kit is based on the Combat vac. I own the Anigrand kit and it is certainly buildable but very crude in the details.

Minicraft also released one in several boxings. It's very close to the Airfix kit (if not...).

.....scribed instead of raised? (Can you say very closely imitated?)

I note from the Combat Models site that they also have a Martin M-130, an aircraft I've long wanted to model along with the 314 Clipper.

Now I know where I can get them I only have to convince SWMBO that about AU$260 is not too much for something that will sit with my other 200 odd models and not be built for years.

On the subject of the Boeing Clipper, take a look at this site

Ant,

What a wonderful story! I remember reading a brief statement about the flight a long time ago, but had no idea what the crew and the 314 accomplished until reading your post. What a magnificent flying boat and what incredible airmanship on the part of the entire crew. It is a travesty that one of the Boeing Clippers wasn't preserved  for all to see the luxurious accommodations and safety they represented during the golden age of  flying boats.

Hi DTB

J-W meant me, I only have the Martin 142 to sell but I think we could make a deal with around 85€ in total for that one means postage to down under included.

To be realistic I'll never get to building it anyways, let me know if you are interested.

Cheers

Martin

Nope! It is the Airfix kit with no alterations. Minicraft just bought bagged kits from Airfix. The decals are better in the Minicraft boxings though.

Yup. There seems to be some confusion about this, spread on on the Internet (like that's never happened before).

Two reviews on Modelling Madness state that Minicraft revised the Airfix tooling:

... it was originally issued in 1967; more recently, Minicraft has done some work on the molds, removing the gazillion rivets and adding finely raised panel lines, and now offers the kit under their brand

... Darned if it didn't look like the Airfix kit minus the rivets. This was confirmed by looking at the underside of the stand where one can see a mirror image of the word 'Airfix' imprinted there. It is also on the inside of one wing with the date of 1964! Apparently Minicraft basically used the Airfix kit and scribed in panel lines

However, I have the Airfix boxing from 1988:

https://www.scalemates.com/kits/airfix-04172-transatlantic-clipper--163336

... and it has fine raised panel lines, not rivets. Minicraft only issued the kit much later, c. 2001 according to Scalemates. In all other respects, it's a typical Airfix kit from the late 1960's, and it can be made into a good model if you're prepared to put some work in.

Not all old Airfix kits were covered in rivets. Many were, a good deal were not, and some had very restrained levels of rivet detail, not unlike some recent Airfix kits. A person could write an essay on Airfix rivets, if they had the time and the inclination😉

Many links and a lot of talking.

But has any one built it yet ?

Here is what it looked like some 20 years ago, on its stand and still looking good in the cabinet:
