Hotlinking Photo Host Choices

Gorby

Recommended Posts

I do wish that this site was set up to upload pictures straight from my PC like many other model making  forums.

Besides being a pain in the rear having to first load all your pictures on to a hosting site and then transfer them on to this one, there is the ever present problem of hosting sites either packing up altogether,  going from being  free sites to demanding money so effectively ransoming your pictures, or sites placing an unsightly watermark right across the picture that virtually negates the ability to view the pictures properly anyway.

I have seen the destructive nature on forums where contributors posted pictures in their threads have been wiped out having used a hosting site for their pictures.

Hi,

Is there any way that the original post in this thread can be updated? Gorby doesn't seem to have been active since March 2022 and just about every aspect of the info on my hosting service (HobbyPhotoHost) is very out of date in the OP, including the pricing and image limitations!

Details of HobbyPhotoHost packages (including a free option) are here https://hobbyphotohost.com/upgrade  and the site has had many upgrades and new features since the original post. HobbyPhotoHost is still aimed only at hobbyists with a focus on making it as easy as possible to share photos, designed specifically for use with BritModeller, with Britmodeller dedicated links and sharing photos with a single click, it also has lots of other sharing options, like direct links, email, BBcode etc. I feel like the site is often overlooked because of the old information contained here :(

Here's a 2-min video showing just how easy it is to upload and share your photos to Britmodeller... https://youtu.be/tSPSqahfswY

Many thanks

Steve

Seriously though, we don’t have much if any experience with photo hosts and photo hosting, as all our files are hosted here on the server. It would be a task for some community-spirited expert to do, so if anyone has sufficient knowledge and a bit of spare time to compile a new FAQ, we’d be happy to replace this one :)

Thanks Mike, understood  and also thank you @kiseca for your support :)

If it's possible, for my little section I'd be happier if it was just showing the title, a link and perhaps one descriptive paragraph that won't age, until the entire original post can be rewritten or replaced by someone with a wider knowledge.

Hi, hoping to start an in progress build log on the site and I have Microsoft One drive as part of my MS365 annual subscription , but when I select an image in my collection on One Drive, then select " share"  ( there is no imbed option I can see as per the previous help in this thread) , then copy the URL, if I then click " insert image from URL " and add the link, the dialog box flashes but nothing appears in my forum post. Any thoughts or advice please? Thanks.

After you click " Insert Image From URL ", copy the contents in the box, then post that directly into the Reply/Topic box.

I have found that this is what I have to do in order to post links from this forum and other sources.

@neilh Are you trying to do this from a phone app or from the desktop? The embed option DOES NOT appear in the mobile app, and only works from the desktop/web version.

See this previous thread...

I'm using the desktop version on my laptop. I cannot see any imbed option at all. Can't post an image of what I am seeing either because I cannot imbed anything - vicious circle for me ....

@neilhI think I now know what's happening...

It would seem that there has been some sort of update to the website, which is preventing you from being able to embed correctly!

DO NOT USE THE OPTIONS IN THE SIDE FRAME TO SELECT YOUR PHOTO ALBUM!

Instead, go via your OneDrive system tray (you know, that funny little cloud symbol sitting in the corner under the little inverted V shape in the bottom right of your desktop screen, next to the time). Click on the cloud. Select "View Online" which should show at the bottom of the box which appears on screen, This should open a browser screen. Incidentally, which browser are you using? Apparently, OneDrive has problems with Firefox!!! I'll assume that you are using the default Edge browser for now. On the screen that opens, as I said DO NOT USE THE SIDE OPTIONS... this is where it stops working. Hover your mouse over the folder called Pictures. Now I do not know how you have your pictures organised, but assuming they are in folders, again select the next folder you want, and carry on navigating to where you have your picture stored that you want to embed. Now....

Click on that picture.

A new window will open. Along the top of the page, just above your picture should be  "EDIT" (in A blue box), share, copy link, Add to album,  Download, and then three dots "..." THESE ARE THE IMPORTANT BITS click on these dots. You'll get a drop down menu - Delete, Play Slide Show, Rotate, Office Lens, View Original, EMBED, Edit tags, Version History. Click on Embed. A side bar will now appear, allowing various embedding options. DO NOT TICK "INCLUDE HTML TAGS" leave this alone. I would suggest changing the picture size to either large or medium. Click into the box that has a lot of seemingly gobbledygook in it, that's the code that's needed for the next step. I hope you know how to copy text (Ctrl+C or right mouse click and copy) and then on the Britmodeller page that you want to post the picture find the box that says "INSERT IMAGE FROM URL", click on this, and paste the text you've just copied into it. Once done, click on insert into post... You should end up with an image (thats the methodology I use, and seems to work (if you see a picture of some books and an F-35A then it has indeed worked!)

@neilh I can see some sort of K class WWII frigate/destroyer (Well that's what I think it is - I'm not into ships - wingy things are my go to!!:D)

Seems to be working fine now!

@treker_ed - Yes, that's HMS Rupert, a Captain Class Frigate and one of the ships my Grandad served on during WWII. I'm a long term aircraft modeller, mainly in 1/48th scale, but I wanted to build a model of this one, and if I can find a kit of it, HMS Salisbury, my Grandads other destroyer in WWII to give to my Dad ( and to be honest also a bit of a homage to my grandad who died before I was 2 years old but would have loved to have talked to about his experiences in the Royal Navy during both World Wars ). I've sourced a Trumpeter kit of HMS England which can then be converted reasonably easily to Rupert, and have stared building my first ship kit since HMS Ajax almost 50 years ago.  It's quite challenging with tiny PE ad 3D details, and I wanted to show in WIP on the forum here , so your help will allow me to add the photo's. really appreciate your detailed and patient help. Thanks again.

Glad it worked... I typed that out at 1am, so was not 100% with it at that time in the morning. Just glad it all made some sense, and it actually worked:sleeping:

I've created a simple video showing 2 very easy ways to share photos on here using HobbyPhotoHost.... As mentioned, HobbyPhotoHost was created for posting on Britmodeller and has supported it for almost 7 years now :)

Hope people find it useful!

This looks great, though your video doesn't show how you set up the split screen to do the drop and dragging.  Also it seems I can't drag and drop photos from Face Book.  Does it have to be drag and drop?  Why can't I copy and paste the URL in to your Hobbyphotohost tool?

Thanks in advance for the advice

Hi Simon, unfortunately Facebook won't let you share photos that you've uploaded to it. Copy and pasting a URL in to HobbyPhotoHost from Facebook won't work for the same reason copy and pasting the URL directly in to these forums doesn't work. Facebook just don't allow it.

HobbyPhotoHost allows you to upload photos from your device, so any photos you have stored on your computer or on your mobile/tablet can be uploaded. Photos that are already hosted on other websites are not suitable. The example video shows uploading from a laptop/desktop computer.

If you don't want to use drag and drop as demonstrated, select the 'Toggle Mobile-Mode to Use Your Camera or to Select a File' button at the top of the HobbyPhotoHost upload page, then you will be able to select a file on your device to upload, or you can use your device camera.

If you need further support please feel free to contact me via the support section on the HobbyPhotoHost website, or a PM. Direct support with the site owner and creator is something you don't get anywhere else! HobbyPhotoHost has been supporting this site for nearly 7 years now, but I'm not sure how friendly Britmodeller is to me offering help here.

All the best

This worked a treat.
