Hotlinking Photo Host Choices

Ours had mostly gone then we had another blow about 2 weeks ago and it drifted higher than it's been all winter. It's slowly melting away now. Still about 10" minimum on the ground.

So in view of all this, would a paid subscription to Britmodeller be a possible route. With the site using the revenue to host images in situ, rather than have them dispersed across the internet, at the mercy of broken links, very common, and the like. I've just finished administering a web site that for about £130pa offered in excess of 25GB storage. With reasonable manipulation of file size, that's an awful lot of snaps. Of course bearing in mind that none of the pics need to be in a resolution higher than 72pi. Big storage is cheap, especially when spread over an active and enthusiastic membership. Just a thought.

Apparently it has been considered and was discussed earlier in this thread:

Just a quick update for anyone considering using Village Photos. In the past, anyone trying to get into that site using Chrome was met with a message stating that the site was insecure. Well I think that the problem was probably the same one experienced here on BM last week. They probably needed to renew their Certificate, which now appears to be done as you can now access the site with no problems.

Hi John,

I've just tried logging in again and I'm still getting the 'Not secure' message in the address bar.

Hi Mark, I hope that your over the Debs bruising.

I always used to access the site via Explorer without a problem (still OK that way), but was unable to get into it via Chrome. But I tried Chrome a few days ago and was able to get in with nothing showing with regards to security. And the site had slightly altered (but not much).

I think it's the troll that's bruised. We shall not see her like again – hopefully.

I've just spent some time looking and I can't find a secure https address for VP anywhere. Any chance you could post a link here please?

The way that I found it was by putting into a Google search; Village.Photos and then clicked on what came up. I couldn't see anything which said anything about not secure.

I've noticed a few of you have almost become the unofficial photo helpers in this thread, and I'd just like to say :thanks:  on behalf of the team, for taking the extra load off us

You're all wonderful, and stay safe ;)

That's what I did as well. I have no idea why it would be secure for you, but not for me.

I'm afraid that until I can get onto something that's secure, I can't change the details in the original post.

Thanks anyway John.

It might be me as I'm not the most up to date as far as computers are concerned. When you first go into the site, where do you see something that says that it's insecure? I could be missing something.

It says it just below the tabs at the start of the site address in the address bar – top left of the screen.

I just went to Village.Photos through Windows 7 and there's no issue.

I then tried Chrome and it worked without issue, too.

Ooo, that was easy 🙂

But the image is quite small.

Thanks for that Chris. The only difference is that I use Linux rather than Windows, but I don't know how that would make accessing a website different.

I'll update the first post to say that some Windows users have said the site is now secure.

Yes, you're missing an "s" in the address, Village.Photos is an unencrypted insecure site

Correct, in Windows 10 the site address bar starts with a padlock, encrypeted site addresses start with https://www. and show a normal closed padlock, unencrypted site addresses start http://.www and show a padlock with a red line through

Security isn't a matter of whether you can access the site without issue, as your computer can have different security settings than someone elses. This could allow you uninterupted access to unencrypted sites without any warning, where someone else with high level security settings on their computer will have access blocked to the same site.

The site isn't secure.

As far as I can see there's no encryption on the site, all pages are standard http, not https, even the login page.

If you're just viewing photo's posted on the site through Britmodeller etc this shouldn't pose a problem, but if you're using the site to host your photo's any login and personal details used on the site may be vulnerable.

If you have little or no personal details on the site and use a unique password/login not too much of a problem, but if you're using the same login details as you do for your bank, you might have problems down the line...

I just went in this morning and the address bar has a closed padlock with https://village.photos/

I only use the site for my photos. I have a pass word but it doesn't affect my bank as I don't do online banking, so I'm happy with it.

Well that is strange, log in address just a moment ago, insecure

http://village.photos/login.aspx

as are other pages accessible from the home page and members photo's on britmodeller hosted there.

If you're accessing the site via encrypted pages and you're happy with it that's fine.

If others are looking to use the site for hosting I'd caution that they should check the security level is acceptable to them (as you should for any site really).

I'm even more confused (bad brain day so not too surprising). I tried using the 'https' address yesterday, but when I logged in it showed 'http'. I've just tried using your link John and the padlock was visible, until I logged in and now there is 'Not secure' and 'https'.

Although I used to work in computing, none of my working experience was with the internet, so Dave, or anyone who knows what they are talking about, do you have any idea what's going on?

I'm getting an orange warning triangle on the padlock which indicates that although the main part of the page is on a secure server, other parts of the page aren't, and could therefore be vulnerable.

Not sure what it is though, as the image links all appear to be https (nice shots of the Heston JC 6 by the way, would make an interesting scratch project)

OK, yes, I'm getting the same as that (well not with Gorbygould on it, that would be weird), once I've logged in. It was on the home page that I was getting the closed padlock and the https.
