AT-AT Battle of Hoth. Bandai 1/144.

Recommended Posts

Hi.

I start another beautiful  kit offered by Bandai for fans of the galactic saga of STAR WARS. Specifically the terrifying battle transport of the Empire called AT-AT.

The general construction is advanced but until I have completed the cockpit I have not decided to start this post.
I certainly believe that it has been a useless and stupid effort because even if you want to see something of what is inside, even using a flashlight, it is impossible. But as I paid for it, I decided that I had to do it. So here I show you: poorly painted, whith Vallejo MC, and worse photographed.

I hope to put some progress soon as, as I say, the construction phase is advanced.

Regards.

Andrés.

The model will receive as a general color a mixture of 95% white plus 5% neutral gray. For this I will use the Tamiya range.

I start with the neck of the vehicle, which joins the main body and the head. It would be difficult to paint on its ends once attached so I paint it before putting it in place.

After a layer of the base color I applied a dark gray shading.

Next, I have applied the base color quite diluted to attenuate the shading and later, only in some points, I reinforce it with a mixture of very diluted brown and black.

The next step has been to perform some chipping in the paint using the sponge technique, with a mixture of brown and black from Vallejo MC. In the points where I consider that there could be movement because they are articulable pieces I have applied "Oil Stains" from Vallejo.
I have continued to varnish in bright and used the AK paneliner for grays and blues. Finally, I have airbrushed opal matte varnish of the Titan brand.

I had wanted to paint the engines for a long time and I wanted to paint some particularly dirty pieces.

For this I have followed the same procedure as for the neck making some shadows with H-333 and then soften them with the very diluted gray base color. For dirt I have used several references from Vallejo; relative to engine dirt, fuel and oil applied one in some places and others in others. But the brown colors that make up these references really differ slightly once applied.

After varnishing I have used AK paneliner and Titan varnish again.

Regards.

Andrés.

seeing these separate shows how impressive your weathering is, I'll be interested to see what they look like when fitted to the body, no less impressive I'm sure but we all know some of the detail will be lost however we'll all know its there.

excellent work

Hi John.

Thank you for your kind words.
Last night during the photo shoot the battery ran out so now. I can show the entire bottom.

The weathering and dirt has been worked as before but I have also used a light green and a dark gray of Vallejo MC in some places. This time, in one of the photos, I have referenced a coin.

Regards.

Andrés.

A nice job on the paintwork there - this kit is a very nice model and a delight to both build and paint. Its great that Revell now have the distribution rights as I had to pay top dollar for a pair of these when Bandai first released the kit a few years back. I love the way the toes can be individually posed and I recommend this model to any SW or SF fan.

Looking forward to seeing your completed

Some advances in this "dog".

I closed the cockpit without putting the red glass. In the film only one of the AT-ATs involved in the battle is seen wearing it, seeing only at the beginning of it. In the images that the battlefield is seen from the cabin, it is not seen that the cockpit has any red glass. Besides, I like it better that way.

The last photo belongs to some pieces of the back of the body. I am not very happy how they have been so as I see the body and legs progress I will make the decision to leave them like this or to decapulate them and repaint them.

Regards.

Andrés.

Those look suspiciously like Harrier engines. I wonder if thats what they used on the original studio models.

Effectively, that's right.

A few weeks ago I was looking a lot on the internet regarding the construction of the ships and vehicles of STAR WARS and I found a place where there are people to identify each of the parts coming from other kits that were used in the kitbashing of the STAR WARS.
It is incredible there is everything ... Tank hatches, transmissions, shock absorbers, fuel drums and even the transmission of a truck in the Millennium Falcon.
Of this particular piece I found nothing, but I am absolutely sure that it belongs to a Harrier kit that was around that time.

I continue to strengthen some shadows and make some dirt accumulated in the lower parts or fallen from some point by the action of gravity. This time with Vallejo MC paints instead of the airbrush.

The head finished.

I have little to comment on it because it has followed the same treatment as the neck, except for accumulation of dirt and oil that I simulated in articulated parts using Vallejo products again.

Very nice subtle wear and weathering. I thought the use of the Harrier engine was common knowledge.

The underside also has a couple of jerrycan halves, a Tiger hatch and a four gun ships turret if you look closely.

  • 2 weeks later...

Carts, iwik: Thanks

Well, after a few days and believing by certain circumstances that I could not work on it for a long period of time it has turned out to be.
So here the photos.
They are not varnished and after the photos I've seen that I have to make some dirt in places where I thought I had done them.

The next step will be to varnish the body and legs brightly, apply oil to highlight details and lines and varnish flat.

This enters the final stretch.

Regards.

Andrés.

Hi Andrés,

I’m impressed by the amount of fine detail Bandai have put on this kit but I’m even more impressed by the way your superb weathering and detailing makes it all pop out. This is fantastic work!

Really looking forward to seeing the finished article!

Hi, Dandie Dinmont.

Certainly Bandai makes the kits with exquisitely beautiful details. It has even reproduced in 1/144 the Allen head screws of the original model. My wife, who is half German, has an expression: "the more sugar is sweeter." That makes painting the pieces especially easy and fun.
Bandai kits are practically perfect and its construction has no problem.

Thanks for your kind words.

Regards.
