I'll also be sitting this one out. Uni means no realistic possibility of building this any time soon. My black buck Vulcans are also 1/200 so I wouldn't want to do one in 72 scale anyway.

Just seen the artwork for scheme B in the kit:

I really hope that is just a placeholder and not a reflection of the pylon to be included in the kit, because it looks like they've fallen for the classic misinterpretation of this well-known photo:

That 'pylon' is the main undercarriage door! The jamming pod is sat on a trolley. The real pylon can be seen at the top of the image...

Damn! A couple of months after I finally decided to buy one with extras for a Black Buck bird, and that along with its stay at Customs ended up costing me an arm and a leg, Airfix releases a limited edition Vulcan Black Buck. Well done, Charlie ol' boy! 🙃

Just what I thought when I saw it 👀

So, it's a case of wait and see then. But if they've done it right I'll buy one to actually build rather than stash.

With four of the five Vulcans modified with these pylons still existing, you'd think they would just go and look at one

Bad news. Looks like they've bottled it.

https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=pfbid02MbRyGS1JQ8p79vUE6RxSpKLeCaR5MvPekDoh9rQ3em1vT2LVCZouipKfPfxXdyR5l&id=100069950596560

Not only does it look like they've done the weird gear door thing, they've got the pylons sitting on the covers for the hardpoints which should be removed when the pylons were fitted!

You can also see it on the box art. The pylon isn't sitting right.

Startling.  I bet Airfix could have placed one phone call to some smart Vulcan guy the RAF Museum and had all the photos they wanted of the proper Shrike installation.

Could have just shown anyone who knows the first thing about a Vulcan and they'd say that looks wrong.

The image for XM597 looks correct, though, so maybe all is not lost.

I can't tell for certain but I don't think the pylon is mounted correctly. I need to see the parts before I can pass judgement on that one

Ah, it’s all a load of nonsense from Airfix, it’s only a year too late for Falklands 40, and is strewn with one rogue U/C door. 😲    That said, I’m really after this boxing, this rascal is a must, so it’s great for me.  😉

I was thinking the same.  The number of times I've seen kits at shows made up like that. Surely they can't be that nieve?

We’re assuming of course that they have got it totally wrong. Seems very strange as I’m pretty sure Corgi did a ready made diecast of the same aircraft in the same scale and seemed to get it about right. They’re both part of the Hornby empire and as I understand it working from the same office. As I said we’re assuming at this early stage they have got it totally wrong? Very strange if it’s right.

Both Tim McLelland's "Avro Vulcan" book from Crecy AND the Haynes Manual have clear views of the pylons, in the first case with both Shrikes and Martel fitted, in the second just the Shrike. Admitttedly, the Haynes Manual also includes that easily-misinterpreted picture, but literally over the page is a much better view. It has to be said, the actual mountings TO the pylons are a bit agricultural, but is clear what the bit under the wing looks like...

best,

M.

You could always use a 1/72 Vulcan as a display table for the 1/200 ones...

I'm going to need some more 72 scale Vulcans in that case!

There are photos of a finished one showing the odd parts. Airfix have also said the kit is already available to retailers to order, so it's not really very early
