Exkiwiforces
Well I finally finished doing the hull and superstructure this afternoon, well only final touch ups to do now before I start doing all the fine detail parts over the coming week weather permitting. I also would like to say a BZ to Jamie @ Sovereign Colourcoats for his advice and assistance to a couple paint colours. For those who haven’t used Sovereign Colourcoats yet give them a try and you will be impressed. I need some advice on the alcoves for the ships small boats, atm the alcoves are currently still painted in the grey primer paint and I not sure what colour they should be or should I just leave the alcoves as is? PS, also I would like to say a BZ to Richard @ Tom’s Modelworks who have a sent another instructions as I managed to misplace the first sheet of instructions somewhere as I slowly enter the final bend in this rather slow build this Northern Australia Wet Season here in the Top End of the NT.
Modelholic
Very nice, Alan I'm thinking the alcoves would be the surrounding colour with the camo following a 'line' over the vertical surfaces if appropriate Maybe a plain background would help showing the camo. ArnoldAmbrose
Gidday, an alternative view is that "would the rear (inboard) bulkheads be seen, with boats and stuff in the way?" So would it be worth the effort of camouflaging these bulkheads? If they were of a plain dark colour it could also highlight the boats and stuff more easily seen in the 'foreground'. Just a though. Ex-FAAWAFU
I’m with Jeff on this one; it seems unlikely to me that they’d bother to extend the camouflage inside the boat bays etc. After all, the bulkheads in Ark Royal’s quarterdeck were white throughout her life; no-one seemed that fussed about messing up the grey all around. The camouflage was to make it much harder to get a decent solution through a visual range finder, not to make 23,000 of ship invisible...
Jamie @ Sovereign Hobbies
Not sure what you'll make of these, but I think they're of HMS Indomitable
Exkiwiforces
Finally a wee package arrived today down at the Post Office and it was a few tins of paint from Sovereign Colourcoats via Creative Models in Sydney that I have waiting for since Xmas. After debate about the colour in alcoves in my Carrier build, I’ve decided to paint them in the new NRAN range of paint from Sovereign Colourcoats in 507C this afternoon. Opening the new tin tin of paint, I’ve managed to mangle the lid, not sure if Sovereign Colourcoats have changed the lids or I was a bit heavy handed and I hope it doesn’t cause the paint in the tin to go off. Hopefully I’m a more of a happy mood tomorrow than I was today as I’m being dick around with DVA, Comsuper/ Military Super IRT to medical pension and also I was meant to back in the clinic again, but there seems to be a lot buck passing atm or going in circles with a jammed rudder or the right stick is jammed in a M113 again. As I need to in the right mood for mixing paints which are yuck 🤢 at the best of times.
Exkiwiforces
Well I had a very productive this afternoon, working on the carrier and the two DKM Z class destroyers. But I only took one picture and it’s of the small boats for the carrier build. The two DKM Z Classes got a look in this afternoon as well with some painting and I deciding to weather to order some Toms Metalwork PE sets as I’m not that impressed with current Chinese knock off PE that ordered from BNA models in Melbourne. BNA models have two sets of PE for my 4 DKM Z classes and it’s pension day tomorrow from ComSuper so I’ll make the d tomorrow as I’ve been impressed with their Customer service and PE. So a BZ to them The small boat chocks for my carrier build, would’ve they been made of wood and bolted to the deck or would’ve the had been made of steel and wielded to the deck?

Exkiwiforces
This has been a bloody slow frustrating build, due to a lack rain this wet season and waiting for aftermarket parts etc. To a point I nearly launched this carrier this afternoon I didn’t have the correct small boats, but the Pom Poms are ready to go. Might have to restart my J& 2 L class destroyers, the RN Cruiser and the Minelayer, as I have the paint to finish these builds. https://flic.kr/p/2iKVGVR
ArnoldAmbrose
Gidday, I've been wondering how things are going. And yeah, it'll be good to see your other builds back on the go. Regards, Jeff.
Exkiwiforces
Was dry fitting the 8 barrel Pom Pom guns and HACS. I found the various gun and HACS positions are to deep, so I’ve had find some card to build up the gun positions. Also I’ve had to move two gangways and these will move to their correct positions Edited April 10, 2020 by Exkiwiforces
Exkiwiforces
Added some 2pdr quad Pom Poms and slowly adding the safety nest to the Carrier today. Started to paint one of the twin 4.5”guns and i just realised I forgot to prime the other 7 4.5” guns. Now Tomorrow’s job after I’ve finish swinging the chainsaw in morning.
Exkiwiforces
Well I’m still here, slowly plugging away with this build during the Nth’ern Oz dry season atm in between stints at my bush estate painting, fishing/ crabbing and of course bush firefighting as the A1 Ech tanker support driver. Anyway here are a few happy snaps to keep you interested. The hockey sticks are all completed and primed ready for a coat of paint. All the main guns are in place apart from a the 20mm cannons The Air Direction Beacon, will a part of it. Adding rigging for the Carly Floats which is now completed and i realise I haven’t taken a couple of happy snaps. Yesterday I managed to get round to soldering the main mast after a few attempts I managed to nail it. Followed by a Dry to confirm everything was right before I stuck it in the pin vice. Today was a slow and steady pace with bird cage and the Air Direction Beacon.
Bugle07
She's looking mighty fine there mate, those hockey sticks look spot on! Good mast as well, think I'll need to get a soldering iron soon myself... Geoff

Exkiwiforces
Well another update from the weeks building of the main mast and one of the two ships canes. Been a rather slow pace build, as I’ve lost pieces of PE to the carpet monster during the week and then me trying to make PE parts to make up for the lost pieces which has been fun not. But around Thursday afternoon I lost another PE piece, so while I was the floor trying to find that, but you won’t believe it! I found a heap of missing PE parts from the last two weeks with all but one for main mast just under the bird cage. So I managed to get all the various bit glued and followed by a trial fit. The aft mast wasn’t the pain in the bottom I was expecting and actually it quite smooth sailing at assembling it. It’s a little wonky, but since this is just a hobby to keep my mind and fine motor skills going I’m happy with it. Started on one of the two ships cranes which has caused a few issues, as all of the rods both plastic & metal are either to big or way too small for the wee pulleys I’ve had to use some copper wire instead. I’m hoping to do a little bit rigging for these two cranes. Once these are finished I’ll start on the yagi antennae’s for the HADT’s. I’m still trying to some Pom Pom directors atm, but I believe they finally ditched in some cases from 42 onwards and they were replaced by single or double 20mm canons and later 40mm Bofor guns Edited July 14, 2020 by Exkiwiforces Doubled up on photos
Exkiwiforces
A very late weekly update for the this build. Is the two cranes have been primed, the Yagi antennas have all but completed bar one which I butchered and some 20mm cannons done. Currently this build is on hold as I’m awaiting for a few parts to arrive via the mail to complete this rather slow build. I have also started another carrier build as I’ve decided to finish the RN Destroyers, Cruiser and Minelayer alongside the the two DKM Z classes during the wet season as I would more home bound during the wet season and be able to devote more attention to them. Hopefully once they are done a start on some DKM battle wagons as well.
Exkiwiforces
Well the small ship boats finally arrived today. I hope to start back up on this build this week and finally complete it.

Exkiwiforces
My package of small ships boats has arrived a couple of days ago, but I’m still waiting on a book that I ordered at the start of Covid19 from Amazon btw. They were cleaned up and primed yesterday afternoon, today I started painting them so all going well I should have them to be place on the Illustrious Class build by the end of the weekend fingers crossed with a completion date by the end of the following weekend.
Exkiwiforces
Well I’m almost finished and I be a bit relieved as well once it’s done especially after today as I managed to knock it over onto the floor. After a good solid week of painting of the ships boats, the two cranes, the two masts and 4 20mm cannons. It slowly coming together now and I was hoping to finish the starboard side including the rigging as was. But once it went for a short flight late this afternoon I called it quits After I repaired the damage to the forward gun turret, the hockey sticks and the crane.
stevehnz
That has turned out a lovely build. There is no doubt to my mind that printed detail like the boats really makes a big difference to the end result, this one being no exception, tumbles not withstanding. Steve. Exkiwiforces
Starboard side completed yesterday afternoon and I was hoping to finish the port side yesterday until I found more damage from Sunday’s mishap. I had another mishap yesterday as well, in fact two, the first I hadn’t put a enough super glue to secure the main mast and secondary I managed to knock two barrels off the rear most twin 4.5 guns. I’ve decided not to put the yagi antennas on as it meant scratch building some mounts for the HACS positions which I might do down the track when I bored on a wet day for shits and giggles preferably not during one of our wet season storms as the power usually trips.

Thanks Steve, I didn’t realise that I started this build back in Nov last yr, it been a really slow at that. Yes since the coming of age of the 3D printing in the modelling scene these days has certainly made some models stand out a lot better with these aftermarket parts which has made some models look very dated except for Flyhawk which is in a entirely different league to the more established plastic kit set makers.

Just the week before last the way this crazy year has barrelled on by, in my world anyeway, hanged if I know where it goes. I built ship kits when I was a youngster, OOB of course 'cause that's all there was. Nowadays, I'd tend to look at most kits as a start point & then start adding on from there, etch & printed bits. I can see the dollar signs ratcheting up so for the meantime at least, intend to leave well alone, though I do want to build a Erebus/Terror class influenced monitor in 1/350 as HMS Saracen one day, carve the hull out of a block of would a la @Bandsaw Steve then gird my Visa card & head for the Micromaster web shop, main turret, secondary armament, some oerlikons & a heap more stuff, including boats, & a fret of generic RN etch for rails & stuff, it might look quite good in the end.
