srkirad
This kit was started almost 8 years ago. I've planned to rebuild metal wings from this kit to fabric ones, using homemade "scraping" knife, and make Royal Yugoslav licence Zmaj-built Mk I, but Airfix issued Hurri with fabric wings, so this one went to shelf, waiting for its turn. When I saw this groupbuild, I thought this could be chance to finish this one also as VVKJ Mk I, but with metal wings (second batch of original Hawker-built Hurricanes for Yugoslavia). So here we are - this photo represents current state of model: - cockpit walls are detailed with scratchbuilt parts - pilot seat is resin part - instrument panel is scratchbuilt from styrene sheet - spinner and blades + 5-spoked wheels are resin copies - wheelbay is completely scratchbuilt from styrene sheet and stretched sprue I'm hopeful I'll be able to finish this one in 3 months.. at least I'll give it a try!
Col.
Looks as if you've got the hard work done out of the way for this one
srkirad
Yup, I think so. Maybe a bit of aligning in wheelbay area, but it should not be a big job before priming/painting of interiors...

srkirad
Here are the first steps of rebooting this kit - I glued some more styrene strips in wheelbay area, glued wing halves together, and I can say this part of the kit is now ready for coat of primer.

srkirad
Between fuselage and wings there was a gap which I chose to fix with few styrene strips (0.2 & 0.3mm). When glue gets dry I'll just cut out strips to match the wing shape.
srkirad
All small parts are prepared for painting, so I've used this afternoon for spraying primer on cockpit, wheelbay, and small parts. Cockpit is primered with Mr. Surfacer 1500 Grey, and then (something like) preshaded with Mr. Surfacer 1500 Black. Wheelbay and some other parts that are supposed to be painted in Aluminium were primered with Mr. Surfacer 1500 Black. It doesn't seem like much progress since last photo(s), but soon I will add some colour into this grey/black world
srkirad
Today I managed to paint interior of cockpit and canopy in RAF Interior Green - I mixed few Gunze colours to achieve similar shade to Humbrol 78. The reason for mixing colours is that I don't feel very comfortable with Humbrol Enamels - I've accustomized to work with Gunze acryllics Wheelbay also changed its colour - now it is in Aluminium - Gunze Metalizer, buffed a bit after 10-15min... That's all for today, detailing of cockpit starts soon... Cheers, S.
srkirad
Cockpit details are done now - instruments on instrument panel are filled with drops of Kristal Klear, while subtle weathering (wash and drybrush) are also applied. I think we're ready for enclosure of cockpit area...
srkirad
Cockpit has been installed into fuselage few days ago. I have reinforced cockpit with styrene strips from bottom side using superglue... Wings are now also glued to fuselage - they require small attention around joints - it will be fixed with a bit of putty... Exhaust pipes were drilled with some dentist tools as they are very hard to reach even with microdrills... Horizontal stabilizers remain to be glued to their positions, and hopefully not to long to wait until primer Cheers, S.
srkirad
Not much done in these two weeks - horizontal stabilizers and canopy were glued to their place. I've drilled out that little intake on underbody Now we're ready for the primer, hope it will be done during the weekend Cheers and thanks for watching, S.
srkirad
Finally I've managed to find time for painting i.e. primering for the start. I've sprayed Mr. Surfacer 1500 Grey overall, and after some half hour break I did the preshading too - Mr. Surfacer 1500 Black. Preshading was done on panel lines where camo colour is lighter, while panels that will be in aluminium colour were painted in black beetween panel lines, in order to give metalizer some depth. Fabric parts were painted in black where they are sunk. On underside I did some playing around. Bottom of the left wing is painted in black (asymmetrical RAF camo), but... I've painted only middle parts of panels, while panel lines were left almost visible in grey primer. I'm trying to make some distinction beetween panels, especially because panel lines are raised. Next one is white colour on other wing, and then we go "metallic way" Thanks for watching, S.
Jinxman
Very interesting finish - looking forward to see how it works out with the next coat of paint.
srkirad
Well, as it was a rainy day here in Belgrade, I thought it was perfect timing for doing some more painting. Other wing was painted in white, leaving some preshading visible underneath - I'm pretty satisfied with the result. Next on the schedule is Aluminium for the rest of bottom fuselage... Cheers, S.
Jinxman
Nice and subtle - bring the aluminium on!

srkirad
First upper camouflage colour took its place - Gunze H73 Dark Green, lightened with few drops of white for the middle parts of panels... Cheers, S.
Jinxman
Already looking very good - will no doubt look even better with the next coat of paint.
srkirad
Well, yes, Jinxman, you're right - final coat of paint did the magic. As I said in other topic (Spit Mk. IIa), today I was masking both kits for 4-5h, and gave them coat of Gunze H72 Dark Earth. After masking Hurricane looked like this And this is how it turned out after painting - D. Earth was lightened with few drops of white for middle parts of panels in order to emphasize preshading effect on panel lines... In few days I plan to spray Tamiya X-22 Gloss Clear, as a preparation for decaling... Cheers, S.
Ray_W
Like your spitfire. Wonderful variation in the finish coat and all in 1/72 scale.

srkirad
Thanks for the kind words mates. Decals i.e. only RYAF roundels are set, as I represent plane that just arrived to Yugoslavia from Great Britain, and already have roundels, but no other markings. This is improvised solution for this version of RYAF Hurricane and no available decals for fully marked one... Cheers, S.
srkirad
Hurricane is coated with layer of final semigloss/matt varnish (matt for fabric parts of plane), and I've started to add remaining and/or missing details. Landing lights were to be represented with only clear sprue made windows, but that parts were awfully thick, so I chose to make them from melted sprue. I think they look reasonably good? Gun holes were also drilled, and red patch painted over them. Antena holder on vertical tail is made from copper wire... Cheers, S.
srkirad
Hurricane is also finished. In the meantime, I've detailed landing lights, made their lens from Kristal Klear, while clear plexy cover is made from ordinary sellotape. Antenna is made from nylon...fishing nylon - 0.07mm (gotta be advertised as by James Bond ) Landing gear made me some trouble with positioning - I couldn't make it stand 90deg to the ground, so it's a bit inward, and caused tilting of kit on one side This kit also has raised panel lines, so instead of traditional wash, I emphasized them with graphite pencil before final varnish. Final varnish is mix of semigloss and matt, but fabric parts of wings, fuselage and tail were additionally sprayed with matt varnish, Chipping was made with silver and gunmetal artistic pencil, while weathering is done with MIG pigments... Here is the full set of final photos, while only selection of 5 will go to the gallery... Cheers, S.
