Henschel Hs129 B2

Next kit I be doing is the Italeri Hs129B2, the Luftwaffe's dedicated close air support aircraft. I picked this up from the big on line market for a measly £7 last week just after completing Revell's Hurricane as a IId and Italeri's A10 Thunderbolt, so CAS aircraft are a bit of theme ATM. Will be built OOB and as quickly as I can as my "stash" box has exceed SWMBO's limits and I'm not permitted to add to until its been run down. Heres the box and sprues.

Didn't realise it was out of focus when I took it last night

So straight into construction a very basic cockpit, sprayed already and will add some seat belts later.

Wing section is made up and engine cowls assembled will be sprayed green later today. Test fit the the fuselage revealed some gaps to be filled.

The Hs129 is a small aircraft for a twin engine, quick comparison against the Beaufighter I have on the go.

So far 25mins construction time.

Nice start, I really must get round to digging out my Airfix kit of this subject, it was a favourite of mine when I was a tiny Martian.

Sprayed the inside of the engine cowls and fixed to the wings, fitted the bomb racks as well. Filled and sanded the fuselage seams and fitted the rear tail planes. Looks like there will be some fitting to get the wings on without to much filler. Oh I fitted the centre rack as I'm going for the Romanian scheme.

Great stuff.  I was reading through this thinking “I hope he does the Romanian one”.     Interesting scheme with nice colourful markings.

Spent 20mins tonight fitting the wings and got a pretty good result.

I've noticed a few errors in the instructions so far such has its says to put the decal for the engine gauges and one of the later pictures show the B1 variant engine cowls fitted.

  • 4 weeks later...
  • 2 months later...

Got the clear coat on this morning and started the decals this afternoon, this set is being difficult to come of the backing paper enough after 30 seconds in boiling water, can only assume that they are quite old.

Time to get a bit experimental! as this is the first time at winter camo I thought I would try a new technique by using maskol instead of tape or bluetac. 3 night of dabbing on maskol and I am ready to spray the winter white.

Hopefully it will work out, will find out later.

So I sprayed this 2 hours ago. Mix of 30% Tamiya XF2 / 30%Tamiya Clear / 40% Tamiya thinners, so the paint had a bit of transparency to it and so doesn't appear to stark against the splinter scheme.

And after 10 minutes of peeling the maskol off.

I'll let the paint harden overnight and use blue tac to clean the flakes of tomorrow but I think I can call this a successful experiment.

I left the white to harden over night and rubbed the flakes off with some blue tac, then sprayed some flat clear. Took the mask off the canopy as well.

Repaired the engine cowls and painted to match, needs clear coat tomorrow.

Quick update, I have had to take the day off work so my new french doors can be repaired by the inept company that fitted it so I have taken the opportunity to sneak some bench time in! Props, exhausts, main undercarriage and all bomb sway braces fitted, just wheels and bombs to go. I may add some exhaust staining later if I have time.
