Nostalgia trip

Pete in Lincs

Recommended Posts

I looked but couldn't find anywhere to put this sort of chat, so I thought I'd start this and see what becomes of it.

I was sent off from Lincoln this morning with a van load of beer to deliver to the Cambridgeshire area.

I did a couple of drops and found myself at Duxford. So I parked up in the empty car park and had a look though the fence at Sally B. She is presently minus the number three engine.

Parked between the Hangars was a vision in white by the name of Catalina.

Off to the Chequers at Fowlmere, where the hanging pub sign has red and white chequers and bears the legend 339th FG 1944.

Inside the pub are photoframes showing WW1 aircraft, early Spitfires bearing QV codes and, of course, Mustangs.

I kept passing village names that linked to former USAAF bases. One such is Polebrook, where the Kings Arms has pictures of Clark Gable posing with B17's.

A good thing to see was quite a few small monuments dedicated to the men who served. :poppy:

It would be good to read what others have seen on their travels.
