F-89C Scorpion gunsight question

Hi,

I have a 1/48 Revell F-89C in my stash, and the kit hasn't any gunsight.

Has anybody here got a picture of the gunsight on an early Scorpion?

The flight manual isn't helping much.

Cheers,

S.

Would it have had a gunsight as such?  Possibly the sighting information was through the radar display itself?

The C had a gunsight, it was deleted on the D version (check the mightily entertaining battle of Palmdale).

And I should read the flight manual and not just look at the pretty pictures...

The sight reticle is a circle and dot reflected on the windshield.

The sight head is above the instrument panel shroud.

Now, what does the sight head look like?

Cheers,

Hello Sebastien

If it helps, F-89 A, B and C had A-1C sight. Some photos could be found on the web, but mostly of those installed in F-86 or F-94. There is a photo in Aerofax book, which you have probably already came across, which shows it installed in F-89 B, but unfortunately it is small and not very clear. Apparently some F-89 D had back-up sight installed in case of radar sight failure. I do not know about H and J models, nevertheless take a look at this photo, found here:

The transparent rectangle just behind the armoured glass windscreen looks very suspicious to me. Of course, even if that is a back-up sight, I have no idea if it is the same as on early models. Cheers

Hi Jure,

Thanks for the picture.

It is a H, and I haven't read much about that version.

As I wrote earlier, the gunsight reticle is projected on the windscreen (I read it in the F-89C flight manual I bought from www.flight-manuals-online.com).

Cheers,
