A strange world full of odd facts

On the subject of odd laws, there are a few Michigan Specific ones;

Harper Woods

It is illegal to paint sparrows to sell them as parakeets.

(Obviously someone has done this or it wouldn't be illegal, but how the hell do you paint a sparrow?)

Kalamazoo

It is against the law to serenade your girlfriend.

(Glad I found out about that one! Could have been arrested!)

Detroit

It is illegal to let your pig run free in Detroit unless it has a ring in its nose.

(I don't expect that's much of a problem these days but good to know!)

Wayland

Anyone can keep their cow on Main Street downtown at a cost of 3 cents per day.

(We still ride cows into town over here, parking is SO much cheaper.)

Old laws to be sure, but still on the books!

I’ve no idea, but the temptation to do one in Temperate Sea Scheme may yet prove too much

That's the joy of working for a company early on. You get to attribute policies to specific incidents and individuals.

Such as the guy who wore an anatomically correct bull costume to work one Halloween Day...

In my town there are laws still on the books stipulating that you may drive cattle down Douglas Avenue and, when you get to the intersection of Douglas and Main you must stop and fire three rounds in the air before proceeding through the intersection.

In Boston, Mass. they still have a law on the books that it is illegal to lead an elephant down an alley after midnight.

Is is perfectly legal for a woman to walk around topless in the city of New York.

I don't believe that, until I did an internet search that revealed a recent court judgement apparently permits it.

How strange.

@Bullbasket That depends on what 'Daddy Long Legs' you mean. Here in Scotland it's the Cranefly which is a true fly in the order Tipulidae (thank you Wikipedia) where in the USA a Daddy Long Legs is, if I recall correctly, a spider like what we call a harvestman or harvester spider. Tiny wee body on big long legs.

Well, Wikipedia being what it is and looking both ways at the same time, also says that they belong to the arachnid family;

Excepting laws about indecent exposure, you are only required to wear a crash helmet whilst riding a motorbike/moped.

The pillion passenger can also ride backwards providing they have their feet on the footrests.

There is a specific law that means you can be arrested for refusing to get off a train.

Resisting arrest is not in itself an arrestable offence (although you can be charged with it).

It seems not. From Wiki, referring to the Harvestman, also known as a daddy long legs.

Common names

Numerous other common names have been applied to the crane fly. Many of the names are more or less regional in the U.S., including mosquito hawk, mosquito eater, gallinipper, and gollywhopper.[21] They are also known as daddy longlegs around the world,[4] not to be confused with daddy-long-legs that refers to arachnids of the order Opiliones or the family Pholcidae. The larvae of crane flies are known commonly as leatherjackets.[4]

1. Only one part or system on your car was invented after the car as whole was invented

2. The first practical dish washing machine was invented by a woman, to limit the amount of crockery breakages by her staff at her hotel / or her servants - depends on which history you read

Two for youse....

For every human being on the planet, there are one billion insects.

It's is technically illegal to play football in a public place in England.  Many moons ago, an English King passed this law 'cos the serfs were playing footie too much and neglecting their archery skills (useful during times of war). The law has never been repealed, so.....

Chris.

And another....

Globally, there are one million lightning-strikes a day.

Apparently, not in England and Wales. It is in the US. Worse still, resisting an obviously illegal arrest can result in this charge. Good times...
