WV908
As Lockheed twins seem to have surfaced as a popular topic of late, I got to wondering - what would be the best starting point for a 1/48 Lockheed 12 Electra Junior? The only potentials I have found are the Classic Airframes Lockheed 14 and the Revell Ventura. I've found mention of a Lockheed 10 in 1/53, but I doubt that would be much good. Cheers, WV908
WV908
Hi Jordi - I was mainly hoping to find a kit that provides the right engines, props, windows etc and then carve the rest in to shape. It appears this may be possible from the Ventura, although I'd need to change the rake of the windscreen. Cheers, WV908
gingerbob
I very much doubt that much would transfer. The 12 was a considerably smaller aircraft than the other Lockheed twins. Here's a thread talking about drawings, just in case it helps you. Based purely on wingspans, a 1/53 Lockheed 10 has about (not exactly, but pretty close) the same span as a 1/48 Lockheed 12. Coincidence? I did a quick visual comparison of 3-views, and it is hard to tell how much would actually directly "scale". Certainly the fuselage looks rather different in shape. It also appears that the horizontal tail has a different aspect ratio, though some slicing and dicing might work. Of course, since they used the same engine, that won't transfer across. JWM
At least the engines could be bought : https://www.bnamodelworld.com/parts-decals-for-aircraft-1:48-metallic-details-med-mdr4810?zenid=112c1443c485413cf973560033b06eca And here are some interesting photos and infos (historical) http://airplane-modelkit.blogspot.com/2010/08/lockheed-l-12.html Cheers J-W P.S> In Net you can find info on L 12 kit but in 1:50 by Texaco series no 17. rob Lyttle
Yeah, the L10 and L12 were a lot smaller than even the L14 Hudson airframe. More like a Beech 18 size. The Ventura was fitted with Pratt and Whitney 2800s.... That's like having 2 F4u Corsairs strapped together!! You'll be looking for little P&W radials and 2 blade props. I don't think any of these kits will get you anywhere near a starting point There's a 1.48 Beech 18 /C45 Expeditor that might supply engines and props and a few sundries like seats, but that still leaves a major scratch building project.

Now checking the Lodestar and it's 7 each side with the wider spacings (and the raised Tailplane.)
JWM
You are right,it is L 14, the L 18 has also rised end of fuselage (and modified shape of wing of course) Regards J-W

Have you had a look through this thread, @WV908? There's photos of an MPM Special Hobby kit in 1.72 of the L12. Probably quite old and out of production long time, but could turn up. I'd say keep a look out and hope for good luck! Also, the 1.53 scale product is a Williams Bros kit. I've never seen it but I've built some of their kits and grab others when I get the chance. I love them and don't hesitate to recommend them. They're old-school modelling for sure but classy in that way! An odd scale, but at almost 1.48 it's going to be a better sizing for the small airframe. If I had the luxury of having to pick, that's the one for me! Keep us up to speed if you make progress. 👍

rob Lyttle
Ah sorry, the 1.53 Williams kit is the L10. Never the less, that could be a starting point for a modification job
Admiral Puff
FWIW, I picked up a Williams Bros Lockheed 10 at the Hiller Museum outside San Francisco (https://www.hiller.org/) about six weeks ago, and they still had a couple on the shelves. Even if you're not interested in the kit it's a great little museum, and well worth a visit.
