I’m confused about why there appears to be an engine option for 14-cylinder, twin row, PW R-1830 Twin Wasps when every B-17 and derivative aircraft only used 9-cylinder Wright R-1820s, which are shown as the other option. Was there a one-off aircraft that used the PWs?

Howard Hughes re-engined his copy with R-2600s, and decals for his aircraft are in the S-307/SB-307B boxing, so I would guess those are supposed to be R-2600s and not R-1830s?

Interesting, as the R-2600 was about 850lbs heavier than the R-1820 it replaced, although putting out 600-700 additional horsepower at takeoff.

Kits 72012 and 72011 come with the same plastic parts.
But some of the plastic parts are used only in one modification.
Parts not used are shown in gray in the assembly instructions

Also, the kits have a different scheme for installing  rigging

Decals 72011- First Production aircraft Howard Huges aircraft

Decals 72012- Pan American Airways system

Who is brave enough to cut up this expensive kit and make the Cosmic Muffin?

TT

Nah, wouldn't cut up a Bat kit for that. However, I do have a Maquette abomination in the stash which may become a victim!

I was lucky enough to have sold mine, I don’t know about yours, but my fuselage was moulded in about 6 different colours!

I have the Bat Project Pan Am version on the way. I may have to acquire the other three ASAP, they are limited to 150 copies of each boxing!

Not only have Bat Project produced a vastly superior kit than Maquette, you can do all of the different variations. I hope no one is going to make a “Cosmic Muffin” from the Bat kit!

And I build the Maquette kit 3 years ago:

The whole story is here

So I have no reason to buy the Bat kit, and I am sorry about it.... But my wallet is perhaps happy ;)

I have read your article J-W, and you are a miracle worker! It’s a magnificent job considering what you had to work with!

I have seen that Roden has released one in 1/144 injection moulded, looks good, except panel trenches are a bit deep for that scale. A few good coats of paint would help. I think only the TWA version is available.

The Bat Project kit is my Christmas present, otherwise I continue with B-17’s. :)

Handsome job, @JWM  Yours really turned out well.  Maybe one day I'll be fortunate enough to see it in person...

Thank you, of course, send me a message when you will coming to Krakow!

Well I finally got this kit as an Xmas present.    Overall it's not bad but it's definitely a bit rough in places.    The panel lines range from fine to too fine which will disappear under a few coats of paint.    The panel lines are also themselves slightly rough in places and not Hasegawa like.   The engines are probably the worst parts and have pretty indistinct, blobby detail.
