neil5208
Seems I've done nothing but jets for a while with the Warthog, Harrier and TSR 2 so I decided to make one of the kits I was fortunate to receive for being another year older. I haven't done a rotary wings since coming back to modelling and after seeing Alain P's excellent Cobra during the Sharkmouth BG I decided on that kit. So the kit, it looks very nice and well made. Decals nicely printed and of course tiny stencils to apply. I will be doing either scheme A Thors Hammer or B Cindy Ann. neil5208
Started on the cockpit tub changing the rear firewall to the G spec wall and spraying the interior grey. The basic tub with the G spec rear firewall before modding. Sprayed Tamiya XF23 grey for the interior.

neil5208
Unfortunately not, between new kitchen, redecorating living room and trying to finish a beaufighter, hs129 and tsr2 this one has not moved forward.
neil5208
A bit of a thread revival, after finishing the AV8B on Friday I had a free drawer in the modelling stand so I pulled this back out of the stash box and a few hours later I ended up at this state. I was thinking the Special Hobby kit is pretty good until I stuck the nose on and found this. A bit of sanding and filling needed.
Booty003
Good to see this progressing again.
neil5208
A bit more work on the Cobra tonight, most of the canopy is on and the stub wings. The canopy has some distortion in places so I'll have to have it open to see anything. The nose seam cleaned up well. I'm going to hold off fitting the nose turret guns until after painting. Masking the canopy is going to to be a challenge.
neil5208
A bit more work on the cobra, skids and 20mm ammo packs fitted, canopy masked and interior colour sprayed this morning and overall primer coat on tonight.
neil5208
Painting the Cobra last night but was stumped when I opened the Olive Drab that I had to find it beyond usable so I went for a pre shade on the upper surfaces with yellow. I'll be trying to get some XF62 so I can continue.
neil5208
I managed to pick up some xf62 olive drab on Monday ans sprayed on Monday evening but the Humbrol paint conversion chart struck again and it was far tpo dark so I resprayed after mixing with some yellow and achieved a much better result, looks closer to the picture from Vietnam. Need to mask off a few panels to spray a lighter green for replacement parts and then the black anti glare panel.
neil5208
Sprayed the lighter panels on the Cobra during the week, added some yellow and white to the base colour, not to much but enough to make them noticeable. The tail rotor drive cover and anti glare panel needs masking and spraying but I'm going to put this aside for a week or so to finish the GR9
neil5208
Sprayed the black panels last night with NATO black rather than matt black as pictures of Cobra's in Vietnam are invariably faded in the tropical sun.
neil5208
Some further work, sprayed the yellow and red panel on the tail.
neil5208
Got a clear coat on Friday and started the decals, the is is the first Special Hobby kit I've done and have been impressed but the decals are much thinner than Airfix or Hasegawa's and I had on tear as I was sliding it of the backing paper so I'll have to have a battle damage repair (BDR) patch to cover the mistake. Lost the "U" from United States Army so will paint a BDR patch there.
neil5208
The main decals are on and so are the stencils on the port side just the starboard side to go and there have been no other decals breaking so I may had had a dodgy one. I have also realised I haven't painted the walk ways on the stub wings so I have to do so more careful masking tonight as there is 4 "no step" decals which need to go on the wings. Test fit of the rotor blades looks good but the rear blade axle is to large for the moulded hole and needed drilling out to fit. The balance point is very close to centre but on a hard surface it sits on its skids. Edited June 23, 2020 by neil5208
neil5208
Walkways sprayed last night so decalling can go on, main rotor head sprayed light grey in preparation for the drive shaft and squash plate rods to be painted. I have resprayed the .50 cal pod light grey as I found a picture in this colour.
neil5208
Decals finished today! I have a feeling that Special Hobbies have their decals print by the same people who do Eduard, just as difficult to work with. Also fitted the 20mm cannons under belly feed system. And some work on the weapons. Next up will be a matt clear coat and then some weathering powders. Edited June 27, 2020 by neil5208
neil5208
Applied the matt clear coat yesterday and started weathering tonight with some MIG Ammo weathering powders, Gulf sand to begin with, this is the second model I've tried with powders so it a big experiment so we'll have to see how it ends. With matt clear coat I like to way the powder builds up in the small corners and panel lines better than an oil wash, and tones down the colours as dirt build up would.
Alan P
Certainly works well with the powders, perfect subject for that dusty weathered look. Also, thanks for the namecheck earlier, sorry I was so late to the bulld!
neil5208
Completed the weathering powder so fitted the 20mm cannon and the .50 cal gun pod this evening, I must say this has been an enjoyable little kit to build and whilst reading up on the Cobra you can see why it is still in use today. Just the 9 barrel rocket launcher's, mini gun/40mm GMG barrels, main rotor and canopies to go.
neil5208
Rocket pods fitted and flat coat on which erased most of the weathering powder so the canopy masks could come off as well. Hopefully finish tomorrow.
neil5208
Finished! ended up with only one canopy open due to the tiny struts being almost impossible to fit, nearly 20 mins to get the one fitted. RFI up. Edited July 5, 2020 by neil5208
