“Achtung Raketen!” – Tiger 1 and Typhoon Mk.Ib

PlaStix

Recommended Posts

This small scene was built as part of the D-Day GB. It features a Tiger 1 - Ausf.E (Late Production), Turret Number 313 of 3./s.Pz.Abt. 503 (3rd Company 503rd Heavy Tank Battalion) and a Hawker Typhoon Mk.Ib, ZY-Y of 247 Squadron.
The Tiger - ‘313’ - would become famous as the one which was overturnd at Manneville during the Allied heavy bombing at the start of Operation 'Goodwood' on the 18 July 1944. Three of the crew actually survived that bombing. My version is modelled before that date while the detachment was still fighting against Allied tank forces during the battles around Caen. My scene depicts a close call during a rocket attack from the Typhoon.

Kits: 1/48 Skybow Tiger 1 and 1/48 Italeri/Hasegawa Hawker Typhoon Mk.Ib
Paints: Humbrol, Revell, Citadel and Railmatch Acrylics all applied by brush
Extras: Typhoon - Eduard PE set, Airfix motor and Airfix pilot
Extras: Tiger 1 - Hauler Grill set, Skybow track links, Stetched Sprue arial and Vallejo Mud
Base: MDF, polystyrene, filler, Woodland Scenics Trees and Turf, Army Painter Tufts, pipe-cleaners, coffee stirrers and Tamiya figures

Hi Stix,

What can I say? That's your best diorama yet. In fact I'd say that's 'THE BEST ACTION SCENE' I've ever seen, with the composition being completely mind-blowingly fantastic. And what's more, every single component is superb, from the Typhoon and the rocket trails, to the Tiger and figures right down to the smallest blade of grass.

Of course, I am ignoring the stick upon which the Typhoon is mounted - a perspex one would be much better as I'm sure you know, so, having not had the time to view your WIP I assume you were rushed for time, or unable to source a perspex rod at the moment, but you ARE going to replace it?

Badder (Still picking myslef up from the floor)

This really is superb, every aspect of it is extremely well executed and the scene works perfectly.

It works so well because it is a scene that you can easily imagine happened during the fighting in Normandy.

My favourite shot is the one of the Typhoon from above and the front (I think it's the 13th up from the bottom), just brilliant.

Extremely well done mate.

Hi Badder. Hope you and yours are well. Thank you very much - as always - for your far too kind comments. I do thoroughly enjoy making these scenes but I do tend to do them mostly in GBs and, therefore, in a limited timeframe - which obviously limits a little of what I do. I did have some thoughts to adding other bits and pieces but decided to draw a line under it on Tuesday. I actually took a day off work on Tuesday to make sure I had time to assemble it all together and take the photos.

And the stick!............well what can I say?..............I am sorry you are not impressed by it but, unfortunately, it was the only way to get the wires from the propeller motor in the front of the Typhoon to the battery and switch in the base. I didn't fancy building a battery compartment in the aircraft itself! It's still a bit of a challenge to get a propeller motor into an aircraft that's not designed to have one.

Thank you again. Hope you have a good weekend.

Kind regards,

Stix

Excellent work Stix, :worthy:... Everything works quite well together. Though i wouldn't want to be the poor Soldaten diving towards the rockets explosions. Never mind what Badder says the “stick” looks fine. 😉 JK.

Dennis

Hi Dennis and thank you very much for your kind comments. Yes - when I was thinking about the placing of the German figures my thoughts were that a couple were going to have to hope the scene was set on the ridge of hill and the rockets were going to hit much further down!

Kind regards,

Stix

Outstanding Stix!👍

That's amazing work all round. I still remember your 1/72 dio and didn't think you could top that one.

Well done and congratulations on, perhaphs, your best work yet.

Cheers Greg

..great work...deserves to be somewhere more 'permanent' (than a forum)... love the way you have the rockets just missing the target as well. It must have been impossible to hit anything specific with such a weapon..

Excellent dramatic action packed scene Stix! So much so the 'stick' virtually disappears as there is so much to draw the eye away from it. One of the best 'action' diromas I've seen on BM (stick and all).

Hi Stix,

i have been better, off work with my illnesses, the pills for which have a side-effect in that sometimes my hands and fingers tremble violently and mean I can't do anything ,model-wise except maybe add some spattered mud to my Tiger!

Unfortunately, I've not had time to view your WIP, so I was unaware that you had electrified your prop, and so now I understand stick. My Apologies.

I will congratulate you on your trees though.... much better than some of your earlier attempts. I do notice you haven't got any leaves blowing in the  backdraft of the rockets after they've ripped through the trees..... how remiss of you! I jest of course. It's a real masterpiece.

Gonna try doing the wheels on my Tiger, but my hands are trembling even as I type (lots of correction have gone on here) so as I say, it may just be applying mud!

Rearguards,

Badder

Hi Craig and I hope you are well and that you had a good weekend. Thank you very much, as always, for your very kind comments. I too was pleased with the photo from above - it was more by luck than skill though. This whole finished piece was actually quite hard to photograph because of the way I had set it up. Some photos worked better than others. And I'm looking forward to following your T-62 build!!

I can imagine that it was very difficult to photograph the finished diorama as it must take up a fair amount of space but your pictures are very good and really do do your work justice.

I'm looking forward to getting started on the T-62 myself, and the T-34 next year.

Not a good weekend unfortunately and very expensive, had to have a new boiler fitted :( .

Sorry your weekend was not good Craig - and sorry you had to spend good plastic kit money on your boiler!

Hope today has been better.

Hi Stix,

I am very sorry I did not see this fantastic vignette, a perfect combination of two of my favorite WW2 machines, I love the composition you have achieved.
You can definitely be proud to put it on your favorite bookshelf.:goodjob:

Cheers Stix. 👍

I think you have done an outstanding job! So much to look at. I'm not offended by the stick either, and your explanation makes complete sense.

Amazing presentation, and I'm going back to take another look!

Hi Alpha Delta 210 and thank you very much for your kind remarks. Sorry for the slow reply - this project dropped off my radar when I started my current build.

Kind regards,

Stix
