HT's Retrowings Curtis P-40E/VK 105 Klimov Engine.

Ill start of with this very rare kit i picked up at Southern Exbo a few years ago.  At the same time i picked up a P-40E two seater which i may save for a rainy day being even rarer than this.

I must say the P-40/Hawk series are one of my favorite manufacturers and aircraft.  Gotta love a Kitty hawk.

Oooh ... I didnt even know these existed. Ive been wanting to do a Klimov engined P-40 for awhile.

Ive not seen them ever released other than from Retrowings and it seemed to be a show special.  Instructions and kits are the same apart from the additional rear canopy.

Assemble the cockpit floor and bulkhead with seat and CP, test fit the two halves together to see if any further chomping and sanding is required. Then out with the AB with US interior zinc chromate.

Further update, it seems this is turning into a weekend build of sorts ;)

Following on from the attachment of the new nose, attention was drawn to the wing to fuselage  join.  The instructions suggest the lower section first and then attach the two top sections. i followed the instructions and i predicted a nice gap at the fuselage wing join.  The wing needed some fettling to get it to sit rich and needed persuasion to action cement to the fuselage as the trailing edge tends to want to pop away from it.

In fact adding the wing top sections to the fuselage wasnt that bad, they both needed a bit of persuasion to snuck  to the fuselage but as you can see its not bad at all. I also added the new backing plate to the spinner and spinner. You may be able to see that the backing plate is slightly too big for the cowling and spinner so this needs gentle sanding to make it all look symmetrical.

Canopy and side windows added in place with some canopy glue.  Behind the side windows I painted the white of the main camo. A bit more sanding in prep for priming.

Tamiya tape cut for the masking process

Added the cowling vent flap? U/C added, had to drill out the holes for the  pegs as they weren't deep enough.

Now ready for priming

All primed using grey stynlrez

Sky blue airbrushed on, i chose FS 35414 as a close match.

White then duly applied, in a rough manner so that its looks hastily applied in the field.

Earlier today i painted the wheels and exhausts xtream metals aluminum.

AFAIK only 1 photo of a Klimov P-40 exists, the kit markings and a Klimov 2 seater are profiles only

No visible markings,  but note the Soviet rockets underwing.

Hope of interest.

Neat bit of work @Hardtarget   :goodjob:

What the P-40E/VK 105 two seater?  AFAIK, only as a profile.    I've not seen a photo.    the only P-40E w/VK 105 I know of is the as I posted above.

Well I would "never trust a profile without a photo" but obviously Retrowings and LF Models may possibly have. I have written to both asking them where they got their info. I will report back if there's an answer.

@Hardtarget Nice model of the Klimov P-40 - I assume you took the masking off and put it in RFI or somewhere but I haven't seen it.

I did complete it and im isure i took reveal photos somewhere, just need to find them on here.
