Short Sunderland Mk III - Italeri 1/72

Thanks Johnny, Bill, Tony, Rob and Giorgio! :)

I did a little more yesterday including breaking off the 'hinges' on (what the Seawings cutaway tells me is) the bomb sight window:

49095382561_7f4c46bd03_z.jpg

I was going to model it open but I can't find a single photo of it that way, so 'closed' it is.

I was going to close up but my Touch-N-Flow applicator isn't working. The new one. Looks like it might be 'rusty'. Rats.

Now then, I like this tool as it lets you concentrate on getting the joins right and avoids those little 'dots' of glue you I get when using the TET brush.

Hold the parts together and run the applicator along the join - done.

I also have a spare bottle of weld.

So I've ordered another one.

While I'm waiting for that I'll sort out the masking.

I suspect you can't find a photograph because it'd only be in the deployed posItion when in use there aren't many in-flight photographs of a Sunderland in action (unless some-one has one taken by a U-boat gunner).

This cutaway shows it in it's deployed position.

Thanks Chris and Simon - great information; open it shall be! :)

Thanks Bill; I hope my love/mojo comes back soon! :)

That last photo is NSoZ and it says it's a Mk V. I was going to mark mine up as Kieth's / Hendon's - have I got my panties in a knot? Please advise!

Bombs on the rack so that you can see the rings:

Turned out OK. Turned out - see what I did there? I did them on the lathe… oh suit yourself :D

As promised some masking:

I've finally realised that it's the bits you don't mask that matter (duh) and how photos like this show where the masks aren't straight enough. Middle row, third from the right. Moved now.

Of course if the bomb sight window is going to be open I need to mask the bottom and there's no mask in the set for that. No worries:

Still feeling a bit tired but getting better.

Don't look at the trenches and rivets. They'll get another coat of Klear when the primer's on.

Hi Ced,

Yes, NS-Z is a Mk V

Your Build is Coming along nicely

As a FYI/trivia re the Bomb aimers window, when a Sunderland (any mark) was mooring the window was opened

meaning the crewman looking to grab the "Lizard" (floating device holding the mooring connection in the water),

had to reach over or step over (if placing ones leg over the bow) with the boat hook while attempting to grab said

Lizard (The bow gunners footrest folded up/over for the bow/mooring crew to stand on, and the window fairings

would be in the way)

Regards

Thanks Alan :)

You're right, of course. Although she was built as a Mk III in June '44 she was converted to a Mk V in July. I'll have to rethink (or just do the kit version…)

Day two of my Air Rifle Tutor course today so another day of no modelling :(

Most of the rest of the week is free so I'm hoping to make some progress soon!

Air Rifle Tutor course, that sounds exiting.

I went shooting this morning wearing my new single prescription glasses. No difference to my pistol shooting, still couldn’t hit a barn door, but my rifle shooting seems to have improved. It could also be due to the fact that my front sight was slightly loose and I tightened it up.

It was OK John but very little excitement.
I’ve done what I needed to do and can now run Scout Shooting sessions (insert your own hyphen).
I’ve also improved my own skills - Marksman no less!

Now I get to practise on the kids next month... oh the power! Not.

Hopefully I can do some Sunderland tomorrow - yay!

As others have said Ced that is some very smart masking indeed.

Glad you're going to have that front window open though can give no logical reason for why that seems a source of satisfaction.

Blimey - a marksman!

Will you be getting a Ghillie suit for Christmas?

Well at least it’s not live ammo, as a kid I helped train air cadets on 5.56 GP rifles (basically a manually fed British army L85a1, a poor rifle for the army, even worse when changed to manual) you will have some treats in store for you, kids and guns! One little guy asked for my held and he had managed to jam the gun trying to get three rounds in the same chamber, at the same time, one with a dented firing cap....I stopped volunteering after that.

Good to see you plugging in with this one Ced, the masking is looking very nice.

That's not a ghillie suit. I'm sure its Hendie wearing his Bigfoot outfit for trick or treat.

Hi Ced,

The Kit version might be easier, as the Italeri kit doesn't have the

P&W R1830's or Cowlings for a Mk V, plus the Front turret is different,

and addition of the Beam hatches???

[snip pic]

Thanks Tony - No Ghillie suit for me, we have to be 'present' in all senses of the word. And we're not allowed to shoot at anything that looks like a person or an animal so that would count twice no? :D

Nothing banging for the air rifles Rob although we do .22 rimfire sometimes at another range. I've already experienced the kids in previous sessions (this certification just lets me run a session). As for the jammed rifles they do the same with pellets - sticking one in, firing it off, deciding they've missed the target and doing it again; the record's 10 so far I think! Little darlings :)

Thanks Alan. So it shall be RAF 461 Sqdn 2oH. Nice :)

Bit of mojo this morning but still a bit worn out. I thought I'd do some easy masking:

49121204366_1c10689af6_z.jpg

Hmmm. Looks like the Eduard masks are a bit small. Rats. They do fit the smaller drilled out windows:

49121202786_d0ed421429_z.jpg

…but for the others I'll get the cutter out and use the design I made for the opening windows.

Later.

Maybe 😴

There is a legal grey area regarding werewolves then it seems!
