LDSModeller
Hi Ced, Sorry late to the party on the DC stowage and Smoke/Flare floats First off the Mk I/II and very possible "Early Production" Mk III's had the capacity/fittings to launch the flares through the fuselage, as you can see in this Wikipedia Photo - note the dual tubes that can be loaded from the "Mezzanine Floor (Ward room roof). There were flaps that opened up as the munitions went out into the slipstream -note the camera mounting below - unfortunately that drawing posted earlier is some what stylized as the Sunderland's never had such a cutout as portrayed in the fuselage. I do have photos of the Racks on the flare/smoke float racks, but they are on another hard drive, so I borrowed this from Kiwi Aircraft images Flare & Smoke Float racks Now to the question of AS Bomb/Depth Charge re-loads This is from the Sunderland Mk III Manual Note on this, are the 450lb DC's also, only ever carried outside under the wings (not on MK III's) Now note this photo - you can read "Bomb Stowage Equipment By Special Order Only" Given that comment, "Extra" Munitions were not a given to be carried by all Sunderlands. Also not shown, is a Special Trestle Table used to assist in loading the munitions from the floor. Again by "Special Order only" Hope that helps you? K PS - why does the creature from the caramel lagoon have a saucepan on his head....? mmmm, sausages - thanks Keith Saucepan? It's those horrid Airfix figures and the nasty plastic they're made of. It's now been trimmed to look something like a cap. 22 hours ago, JosephLalor said: After seeing this post, I now imagine the Sunderland as possibly being the only British combat aircraft to have a steward on board. Thanks Joseph - Of course a steward was required for the long sorties 21 hours ago, Terry1954 said: Or better still a sausage and bacon bap .......... as a very occasional break from porridge of course! Thanks Brian - and more to come! 20 hours ago, limeypilot said: Now I'm no expert, but those look more like your 250lb depth charges to me! Flat nose and no impact detonator! Ian Thanks Ian - we'll get it sorted, I hope 18 hours ago, dogsbody said: Ced, what you have there, in the kit parts, is an anti-submarine bomb. Those are different than depth charges. Below are taken from the same source as my last posting. [snip pictures] Chris Thanks Chris - more great information, appreciated I shall now refer to them as 'bombs'. 18 hours ago, Fishbed said: The Airfix Whitley VII kit has an extra few bits with the radar aerials and a handful of what could be these very bombs/ depth charges. I may have used mine, but others may have them spare? Tim Tim Thanks Tim 17 hours ago, hendie said: You are of course quite right Crisp. Brandy
I was having a full breakfast in the pub when I read this first. Watching the S Africa v Italy game and enjoying bacon, sausages, black pudding, white pudding, eggs, baked beans, mushroom, oh and some Yank thing that has started to appear on British breakfasts, hash browns. I like them, but not on a fry up! T'was a lively lunch as the bar was full of Sth Africans! Ian So much for the diet!
Biggles87
All this talk of food is making me hungry, so I think I’ll have a early lunch as SWMBO is visiting a friend in hospital and I can please myself. John 3

K Apologies Keith - a bit of both! We had a long weekend with some friends that have a Ski Chalet in Abondance, French Alps. Not being a fan of fixing slippery planks to my feet on slippery ground we've not been before as we had to wait until they went when it was green. Like this: There was some white stuff on the tops on Monday: A great time was had by all, except that I've got another of those sebaceous cysts, this time not on my head but in my, er, nether regions. As usual it's a pain but this one's sorted itself after a hot bath so no visit to the surgeon for me this time, thankfully. I shall miss the free tools though… Saw the Doc today and he's given me some antibiotics and dressings. Trouble is the dressing are a bit big so I'll need to do a Kaya Scodelario (she's half Brazilian). TMI? Sorry. I hope to have some mojo back soon - the Sunderland awaits! 7
